Woman Awarded $400,000 In INSEMINATION Mistake
<snip>

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A jury awarded more than $400,000 to a North Carolina woman who was accidentally inseminated with unprepared sperm at a fertility clinic.

Kelly Chambliss said she hopes it never happens to anyone else.

Chambliss went to the clinic in 2002 for her 12th attempt at pregnancy. Officials say a clinic worker inseminated her with the contents of an unlabeled syringe, which contained sperm left over from another client's procedure.

Chambliss said clinic officials told her two days later she had been injected with sperm that hadn't been properly prepared. She said that caused problems with her uterus.

1. One wonders
...what exactly "unprepared" means. Doesn't it come "unprepared" the way most folks use it (without medical intervention, I mean)? If it was good enough for the previous procedure, shouldn't it still be good? What sort of uterine problems could this stuff have caused?

2. Semen washing...
I did a bit of searching and came up with the following. I interpret it to mean that uterine insertion of sperm is different from vaginal insertion...

_____________
web site

Only washed and prepared sperm are used for intrauterine insemination because neat semen may cause severe uterine contractions, pains, cramps and sometimes collapse. The aim of washing and preparation of the sperm are to separate sperm from seminal plasma, remove bacteria and other debris and chemicals that may cause infection and irritation and improve sperm capacitation (this increase sperm ability to penetrate and fertilize an egg).

3. I knew all I had to do is ask the question
...and someone would have an answer. Do they use Brillo pads to wash the semen?
