Question for Canadians: What are your national holidays?
I know Dominion Day is July 1 and I know Gordie Howe's birthday is March 31, but what are the other important dates on the Canadian calendar? I have this Canadian flag here (courtesy of MSchreader), which I flew July 1 last. I have a hankering to get it on the staff out front of the house (you should see the look the neighbors give me -- they think I personally seceded from the union which, practically speaking, I have).
And, yes, I fly the US flag on our national holidays, too. I feel it's more important than ever to not let the fascists claim it as uniquely their own.

Training camp began yesterday for the Saginaw Spirit (OHL), BTW. See you guys at the arena!!

2. We have July 1st as Canada Day
Canada is no longer a 'dominion' but an independent country.

Nobody knows when Gordie Howes birthday is...not even hockey fanatics!

There is the May 24th weekend when everyone goes to the cottage for the first time after winter.

August 1st or nearest weekend is a general civic for-the-hell-of-it holiday.

Labor Day weekend is coming up.

Thanksgiving is in October.

November 11 is Rememberance Day...for the fallen in the wars.

Other than that...standard stuff...Xmas, New Years, Easter etc.

3. "Canada Day," yes
Old force of habit, I suppose. But then, I live closer to Ontario (at either Sarnia or Windsor) than I do to Grand Rapids. One doesn't get an Ontario Hockey League team without location, location, location.

Geez, not only do I know Gordie's birthday, I know he was born in Floral, Saskatchewan (we Michiganians claim him as sort-of-one-of-our-own). I've even met the man and have a personally autographed picture of him.

5. missed "Civic Holiday" earlier this month ...
(It's got a different name in some provinces, such as "BC Day" -- began as a British-style bank holiday and now has heritage connotations.)

Other ones we have that you don't ... Boxing Day (Dec 26th), Victoria Day (long weekend near the 24th of May). St Jean Baptiste Day in Quebec. Oh, and Thanksgiving in October.
