1. I don't think they have lost credibility

Their latest is different for sure but all band evolve. They met with great success because of talent. Just because a band is successful does not make them a sell out. I don't see them signing up for some reality series like Ozzy or using their music to hawk some products. The only thing that rubbed some fans the wrong way was their opposition to downloaded music with royalties. But hey, it's their music, they made it, so they can bitch all they want. I think I would too.

2. It's not a question of selling out

They were certified platinum before they ever made a video or had a radio hit. For me, it was when they stopped leading and started following. Take a look at Load, Reload and St. Anger. All three of those discs were an attempt to sound "contemporary." And they all equivocally sucked.

but it seems that once a band meets mainstream success then they are deemed sell-outs, lose credibility, etc....Every band wants to be successful and I don't see them as losing credibility. Hell, St. Anger certainly isn't contemporary sounding. How many metal albums do not contain guitar solos?

From Rainbow and early DIO.. they were great.. actually waited outside the hotel when they were in Seattle in the early/mid 80's (who can remember) to sign some records. They invited us to the hotel's restaurant and we talked with them for about an hour over tea. Wonderful experience.

Makes those guys look like saints. Total arrogant prick. In contrast, I also met the guys in Over Kill (another metal band) at an in-store, and they were cool as hell. They really thrived off of the fans.

such a drunken prick in the early days of Metallica. It's too bad that Megadeth has seen better days. I really liked them. Hopefully Mustaine has mellowed a bit.

from Iron Maiden were really gracious, as well (I almost forgot about that meet). These guys made you feel like they were genuinely thankful that you supported the band.

22. i met angus and malcom of ac/dc in a small hole in the wall.....

.....metal bar in shreveport La. after a show there years ago....the who made who tour to be exact...they were with whoever was the drummer then too...all nice guys, although i could hardly translate the slur of drunken scottish/australian dialect they were throwing our way...whatever the case, everyone that happened to be in the upstairs portion of the bar that hour were drinking free on them...i didn't realize how short he really was untill that moment

as for metallica...the black album was their undoing, although you can say they were expanding their horizens. when they were pissing and moaning about the napster mess, it just showed what a greedy little SOB lars ulrich was...after all, this was the band who in their early years were encouraging fans to make bootlegs of their concerts. i havent bought an album of theirs since "and justice...", although i do like some of the songs from the black album and load....

another note about them...their music seemed to change when the mustaine era songs ran out...all after the "and justice..." album. he was kicked out prior to the release of "ride the lightning" but he is credited for songs on the following two albums. he wrote nearly all of the songs on the first 3 records. newsted really didn't change their sound. i think he is to metallica what vinnie vincent was to kiss, just lasted a bit longer. cliff burton is a musical hero to me and an influence on my bass playing...right up there with geezer butler IMHO....

14. Yes, I'm a Cliff-o-phile myself

Cliff Burton was the soul of the band. He's the one that really broadened their musical horizons, introducing them to other musical styles and teaching them music theory and harmony. Without him, they probably would have gone down in history as Motorhead clones who cut a few albums in the 80's beofre fizzling out.

S&M is rather creative, and I like the use of the orchestra.

Otherwise, I'll stick with "Ride the Lightning".

Does anyone listen to Apocalypta, the cello quartet that covers Metallica and some other heavy metal bands? It's pretty cool. Their version of "Fade to Black" played by cellos is really amazing.

The last Metallica album I bought was "And Justice For All"

the newer stuff well just isn't my cup of tea .

I've always been more on Dave Mustane's side
and have more Magadeth CD's than Metallica :shrug:

21. The anti-Napster fiasco

They did have somewhat of a point, but could have handled it better. Instead, they alienated their fans.

S&M is bloated pompous garbage. Also screwed up royally with "Garage, Inc." A Bob Seger tune? Oh, please!

And the "Icon" show was embarassing.

At least RATM broke up at their creative peak, leaving their fans begging for more. They never became irrelevant and cliche.
