Poll question: New improved expanded Favorite Singer/Songwriter poll
The old original poll is here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=132729&mesg_id=132729
Go be the 100th to vote in it :)

Being the Anal Retentive god, I actually went through the whole thing and counted all the Other votes. Why I bothered I'll never know, since this new poll only partly draws on the actual number of votes and partly on the force of the arguments. The original poll was about "singer/songwriters," a category that arose in the early '60s, spearheaded by Bobby Dylan and somewhat narrower than the entire class of musicians who sing and write songs. However, that's all pretty damn silly, so this is a poll about favorite singers who write songs. The new poll mostly reflects how many nominations folks got from the Other category of the earlier poll, but I added in Bruce even though he was only mentioned once, 'cause he's the Boss. (Roger Miller fans are welcome to send hate mail, since his is the slot Bruce stole.)

PS: 99 votes cast and none for Nanci Griffith? For shame. If she had only written "Love At The Five And Dime," she'd still be among the greatest.

Okee: Who's your favorite singer/songwriter? You can vote "Other" by posting a reply. I only got 10 slots; it's understood that Other is going to win this; just want to have 10 people up there, rather than 9.

3. Tom Waits? Leonard Cohen? Nick Cave? Neil Young?
Somehow Smokey Robinson seems wildly out of place on that list.

That being said any of the ones I mentioned above would rank for myself higher than anything on the list you provided.

To each their own though.

12. I Agree Leonard Cohen
But no way Smokey doesn't belong...not only is he a good songwriter, but he's the best singer on the list.

6. Somebody Had To Vote for Peter Gabriel
So i did. That's no knock on anyone else on that list. They're all superb in the fields.

But, Peter had ZERO votes when i got here. So, i couldn't let that stand, could i? (I mean, come on! Red Rain!)

9. All fantastic choices (and contributions), but
I'd like to add three of my favorites for your consideration. In no particular order:

Aimee Mann, Neil Finn, and Andy Partridge

11. To all dissenters: Hey, I would still have voted for Lyle Lovett
Let this fall off the front page and start your own poll; personally I'd like to see a younger person try this. (I'm already aware that I'm terminally out of touch, thanks.)
