Favorite possessions?
Mine are my Mephistos, which I bought in Granada, Spain, last spring for about 80 euros--about a third of what they cost in NY--and which are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. And they're beautiful--black, sleek, nubuck. <Sigh...>

And I just got a new guitar--an Ibanez transparent red sunburst acoustic electric. And it too is beautiful. But it's not exactly comfortable yet.

Your turn.

1. My books and my journals.
I have been keeping a journal for about 15 years now, and I am really glad I did. My books, well I love books.

5. That's very impressive.
I tried keeping a journal of my trip to Spain and it was difficult. I mean it was easy to write because of all the material, but it was very difficult to find the time to write it.

41. I started by forcing myself to do it every single morning. Now it is easy
because I get up early and it's quiet. 30 days to form a habit is about right. Now the day would not seem "right" if I didn't.

46. My problem was that every day was so full
that I wrote at least 10 pages on each one. And I was up too late each night trying to be faithful to the journal and to what I was representing in it. My last entry, about five days into the 10-day tour, was an incomplete account of the day, which I promised to complete the next day. But of course, being in Spain for the first time in my life, the next day was as full as or fuller than the previous one.

Nevertheless, I'm thrilled I have what I have. It's better than pictures.

44. My wife has kept a journal since she was
about 15. Almost 30 years now. I really admire that. I can keep one for about 5 days - don't even bother anymore.

She gets really antsy if she doesn't have time to journal. Its really nice to have her record, too. We can go back and look at the details of that time we hitch-hiked through Europe when we were 20, various other significant events. What has been an eye opener so many times though, is how easy it is to assign memory to the wrong dates.

my favorite possessions are my books - I have been collecting for years and enjoy having them crowd me in my office.

I had a nice new an Ibanez transparent red sunburst acoustic I came home and it was gone.

Seriously though, I have a little Art Luthrie blue acoustic, it's been everywhere in the nation with me. I love it. I also have my first front page story and photo laminated.

6. A leather-bound set
of Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso in the original Italian. It belonged to my grandfather. My dad used to read it to me when I was a child.

A threadbare teddy I've had since I was 2.

Some letters from an old flame, now gone from this life.

A photo of someone quite, quite dear to me.

8. My guitars
I collect them. I own a mid 70's Les Paul Standard (cherry sunburst) heavy bastard, a Guild blonde x 170, a Brian Moore iGuitar, a Fender Aloha strat one of a few made at the custom shop, a Martin D28 80's, a Taylor acoustic electric that was the prototype for what later became their 614 CE and a few various other guitars.

15. They are all satisfying for different reasons
The strat is great for all the noises you can make and the tone of it and rake of the strings is great for different styles and sounds.

The Taylor is the one I play the most as now I mostly do chord melodies..haven't gigged in several years. The shorter scale of the gibson is great for a classic jazz sound and the semi-hollow body of the guild is great for boom chuck Chet style stuff...

As I said, I mostly play the Taylor simply because I am not plugging in as much around the house (tortured the neighbors for years now...fuck em they use weed blowers at 7 am on a saturday)

I don't play the Martin much since it isn't a cutaway and I don't play lesbian campfire music anyway..but it has that classic Martin big sound.

22. Both
In the late 70's and most of the 80's played in a punk band and had my hair every color on the planet -dyed it on Friday and back to a color found in nature for the work week (looked like shit really)

Then in the 90's played in a few blues bands and now occasionally play solo for private functions, a coffee house now and then and with a sax player now and then.

39. I'll Go With That, Too!
Really, it's all my musical stuff. I think those are probably my prized possessions. (Even more than my golf clubs, which are consumables, over time.)

I've got a pretty nice set of guitars! Nothing extraordinary, (well maybe one).

I've got a '71 Strat that's been modified with a locking trem, a Warmouth Birdseye Maple neck (worth more than the guitar itself) and Duncan SSL1 pickups. I've got a 2000 Standard Telecaster and a 1962 Jazzmaster with everything original. (It's been repainted, though.)

I've got a Dan Armstrong lucite guitar that i got REAL cheap. And, i've got an RG series Ibanez, which is my "pedal to the metal" guitar for noise work.

My bass is a 5 string Standard Fender Jazz. No mods at all.

My acoustics are a Giannini which i keep tuned to open G for slide, and a Takamine single cutaway with piezo in the bridge.

They're all on stands in my basement rec room so i can just grab the one that suits my mood and play.

I'd probably have to include my piano as well. It's a Baldwin console of fairly recent vintage.

My amp is a Boogie

My keyboards are an Alesis QS8.1, an Ensoniq SQ-2, and 3 rack mount MIDI tone units through an 8 channel mixer into a TOA 380Z 3 way cabinet.
The Professor

An iMac G3 350, the first computer for which paid cash (five years ago). Soon to be upgraded.

My sword is a standard aluminum blade Katana practice sword that I use for Kuhapdo, and althought it lacks a full tang and the balance is a little iffy (because of the tang issue), it's still wonderful to do forms with.

1999 Escort. The first care I've ever bought new and paid off. Everytime I sit in it I feel like I am in the showroom. It's funny that such an inexpensive vehicle could offer me so much joy.

47. Mine should be in a museum
I own a heavy gold circlet that has been estimated to be probably be between 1800 and 2300 years old. It was found in northern Scotland by my great grandfather, and the story is that he found a "cave" with a skeleton in it near Inverness when he was about 7. He was afraid that his parents would take it away, so he hid it for many years, and eventually brought it to the U.S. with him. It's stayed in my family ever since. I have no idea what it's worth, but wouldn't sell it at any price.

my books, particularly my growing future grandchildrens library and the Viola I don't yet own.

When I was little I had a violin but never practiced. Later my grandmother said she would leave her baby grand piano to whoever would learn to play. Like a dope I didn't take her up on it...to busy being a singer/actress (which I hardly had to practice at all and being the lazy slob I am, that worked for me). Now I have decided to learn to play Viola (figuring the sound would be more mellow during those first painful months of screechy practice). So I am going to buy one as soon as I can afford it.

HD-28 LSV. Large soundhole vintage, after Tony Rice's guitar formerly owned by Clarence White. It's the guitar I waited 20 years for; it's a hoss and it's the best acoustic guitar I think I've ever played. It'll be with me unti they bury me, then my son gets it. Also, my banjo and fiddle. The banjo helped me survive a divorce 25+ years ago.

55. Sentimental value mainly...
*My college degree that took me 20 years to get
*A picture of Paul McCartney taken with a good friend of mind at a PETA event
*An incredible picture of President Clinton and Vice President Gore standing next to each other (from about the waist up) waving to a crowd that my friends took about 10 years ago when they were living in Tennessee. They had it enlarged and framed. About 7 years ago they moved back here to California. My friends, a lesbian couple, just broke up after a 7 year relationship. I was heartbroken for them. I've spent every Christmas for the past five years at their place and had the best Christmas' of my life. Whenever I would go and visit I would jokingly say, "if you two die together, all I want is that picture of my President and my Vice President." Well, they both wanted me to have it when they were splitting up their things. As much as I love it, I'd give anything if they got back together and I could give them their picture back. God....I'm emotional today.

56. My desk
My grandfather was a carpenter and cabinetmaker in Chicago during the depression. During the frequent times he had no work he would make the furniture for his family. This desk is a beauty, the drawer bottoms were used signs that you can still read but everything exposed is top notch materials and craftsmanship. He also built in a secret compartment as he did not trust banks.

I also have a kitchen table he made and many tools, he made those too.
