Computer Help - Where to buy one?

I've been building computers for years now but now I have a question about somehting I haven't been keeping up on. Where can a family member buy one. Since we don't live near each other it's not really feasible for me to build her one and she would also rather stay away from Compaq/Dell/Gateway. I was thinking a good internet store would be good for her (with my advice). She's not a computer neophyte, she's just worn out her last computer and is in the market for a new one.

Any ideas?

3. tigerdirect.com or motherboardexpress.com

have bought barebones systems from them and parts and been very happy with the companies. Tigerdirect.com sells complete systems and I think motherboardexpress.com does too.

We also purchased 2 computers from SAGelec.com years ago and they are still running strong despite heavy use - never have crashed, I guess they do something right.

4. I think the best way to buy a new computer...

is to, first, decide what you're going to use it for (i.e. none of this "Well, someday I hope to do high res, feature lenth animated movies...").
Second, decide how much you want to pay. Then call a local computer store and have them build one to fit that price range.

Then load up with open source software. Load Window$ if you must but use OpenOffice (productivity), Mozilla (browser, email), GAIM (instant message client). Check out sourceforge.net for all your open source software needs.

I'm familiar with some of those sites, I just want her to have a couple options. I'd rather build her a good one, but it's easier for her to get one shipped with warranty etc since we don't live near each other.

They have good equipment at good prices. I always build my own PC's. That way I end up with what I want the way I want it.

12. I love my Dell...

I bought a Dell online. I used to have my computers built by local folks, then add new hardware myself. I upgraded the motherboard on my last computer, and kept getting crappy motherboards, so I just gave up and let Dell build a computer for me. It is the best computer I've had yet.
