Were you named after anyone?
On one of the star Trek spinoffs, there was a girl Brenna or something, so my parents changed it around to Briana.

I dont even like Star Trek that much!

What about you guys? Any dumb stories of how you got your name?

(I suppose it could be worse. My dad wanted to name me Amerina, after some some song by some people I've never heard of. :P

3. Kobe Bryant
He was named after the steak from Japan.

I was named after my mother's dear sister who died in 1944 because of an infection arising from a RH factor pregnancy. The name isn't fashionable but she was apparently quite a beautiful person and it is an honor to have it.

5. Yes.
My second middle name is after my great-aunt, who died shortly after I was born. The name usually skips a generation, and it was my turn. According to the geneaology another great-aunt did, the name has been in the family since 1600 or so.

Doby.

I'm named after the second person of color to play in Major League Baseball. Jackie Robinson played in the National League, and Larry Doby played in the American League for the Cleveland Indians. My dad always admired him, so that is how I ended up with the name. I kinda like it - except for Dobie Gillis (bad sitcim) and recording artist Dobie Gray, I haven't run into anyone else with this name.

It's kind of complicated. I was originally supposed to have been Berhyl after my dad (Burhyl). My mom wanted a name that was similar to my dad's. Thankfully my dad put his foot down about Berhyl.

Anyway, they knew they wanted my middle name to be Deanne after a woman in my home town who rented them their first house and who basically helped look after them as newlyweds in a new place. She was like an extra gramma to me when I was little. So, Deanne for a middle name.

The only other person my mom had ever known with that middle name had the first name Barbara. She was a good friend of my mom's in high school. So, a B name like daddy's, a name that brings up good memories of her friend and honors gramma D, and my mom was a big fan of Barbara Jordan so that helped too.

Long story I know. :-)

11. Yes, my grandmother.
I was the first female born after she died, so I got the name. She always told my mother (who took care of grandma until she died) to NEVER, EVER name a child after her. Well, mom didn't listen, and I got the name. I have never met another person with my name, but there was a Russian czarina with the name and it seems to be a not-too-uncommon name in South America (on googling). I hated the name when I was growing up, but eventually came to accept it.

I guess it could have been worse... Dad wanted to name me Theodora Willamena after baseball great Ted Williams.

15. My dead older brother ...
My parent's first child was named Stephen Michael -------. He died when he was 8 from an auto accident.

My parents had 4 children since, me being the last. For some reason, they named me Michael Stephen -------. I was told I reminded my mother of him when I was born.

I learned later in life that some of my devout Catholic aunts now believe in reincarnation because they belive I am him. Been thinking about going to a paranormalist(?) to see if it's true.

23. My great-grandfather...
I was born when he was 76; he had 4 kids & 8 grandkids & I was the 8th g-grandkid - he was tickled to have a name-sake. He bought me a little sailor suit when I was about 18 mos., and I had my portrait taken in that outfit - my favorite picture of myself, probably because of that story.

He was a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, too. On a bet, got wheeled around town in a wheelbarrow after the 1936 presidential election. He wore a sign that said "I won with Roosevelt" and his friend (loser) wore a sign that said "I lost with Landon". The picture ran in the local newspapers.

My bride is named after a great-aunt, and we have three boys, who are each named after a relative.

30. My grandfather...
He was a Thomas. My Dad was a Walter, and wanted me to be named after him, but my mother, desperate to not have a son named Walter, convinced my father to name me after her dad (P-pa wasn't to fond of my dad at first, and mom convinced him this would go a long way toward making him happy). That worked until my mother got pregnant and 11 months later had my brother. My father said "my turn" and wanted his new son named after HIS father... Walter!

33. My middle name
is the same as one grandmother's middle name, so I think I'm partly named after her. I look a lot like her, also.

Some years back I was visiting an uncle, and an elderly (then 92 years old) neighbor was also visiting, and the elderly neighbor had known grandma when grandma was my age. And upon seeing me, the neighbor exclaimed at how much I looked like said grandmother.
