Tropical Storm Fabian
seems to be headed toward S. Florida. Question: when, if it becomes a Hurricane, should I leave the area?

1. Keep an eye out.

I had not seen that. Everytime we prepare, it turns or does something weird. I went through one hurricane where I live now, and the eye went right over our area. We survived.

Sometimes evacuating is worse than staying unless the water surge is a problem. The traffic will be the problem.

Actually we had minimal damage for such a bad storm. Outlying areas had a longer wait period for outages, but we are nearer to the downtown areas.

Stock water, etc. all that good stuff.

4. OMG! So Cal............threw me off my chair laughing too hard/Graphic!
Where's that gorilla, btw.....was my all time favorite.....but you seem to have something new all the time. Was he retired?
Which you'd do a collection sometime for DU.......put it down in Meeting Room. Now that there's extra bandwidth. Sort of a retrospective of the ones that people here liked the most.........

5. headed for south FL?
Sounds like it'll be tearing down my father-in-law's garage in a few days if it becomes a hurricane. He lives in south texas. He feels snakebit.

6. Now, back to Carlos...didn't want to sidetrack your thread. If hurricane
becomes more threatening just post. Lot's of us here on DU have been through them and we can give you tips. Since you've moved to Florida, you might want to go ahead and stock up on bottled water and soups and stuff you can eat in a power failure. If you have a gas stove it's easier. If not, go buy one of those little two burner camp stoves by Coleman.
They are small enough to store.......and easy to use. If you do that now you will be prepared and not get caught in a panic rush at the grocery stores or hardware stores with everyone else. The camp stoves are good anyway, because many gas stoves can't be used because of the "automatic starters." They are the first things stores run out of .......along with bottled water when a threat of a hurricane comes.

8. If you have a natural gas stove, the burners will work.
But not the oven. We also get the Sterno, packaged milk, canned goods regularly.

13. Fabian might be another Outer Banks blast... maybe Long Island
unless that front from the pacific northwest gets to the coast first.

15. Goobercrunch.......you must be SC or NC.....we keep our eyes out for those
hurrican's! We know what to do.........how about those bathtubs filled with water so one can "Flush!"

Ice storms too.....Been through both.......UGh! Power outages.......no picnic...Sweat to death and starve or freeze to death and starve. Folks with gas grills have it the best....if they can tolerate the weather outside and the neighbors.......but they get to use up their freezers down to the two year old chicken! LOL's

11. Depends where you are.................
and what category hurricane it becomes. I'm in South Florida myself, only I'm smack dab in the middle, not on the coast. Everybody comes here when the hurricanes start flying. I wouldn't worry about it just yet. Believe me, they'll let you know if you're in danger. They take this stuff VERY seriously down here.

17. Welcome to a Florida Tradition
Amateur hurricane tracking. I could write paragraphs on how to prepare for hurricanes, but here's what to do for the house.

The best recommendation I can give you is when preparing your home to make sure all your windows are taped and well boarded up (in fact, if your house's windows do not have Bahama awnings or been fitted for metal storm shutters, I recommend getting them). Make sure the windows are boarded/shuttered at least 24 hours before the storm arrives. Many of the homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Andrew first lost one or more windows, subsequent to losing their roofs/outer walls. Also, open a window or door on the leeward side of the house(opposite the storm's path). This will prevent the house from being damaged by dramatic drops in pressure. Most homes in Florida can easily withstand a good Category 3 storm, which will produce winds around 110-115 MPH. If you haven't bought a home or are in the market, look for homes built with cinder blocks (i.e. CBS homes) and a flat roof, as these will best weather hurricanes.

Fuel up your car(s) and have at least two weeks of nonperishable food and water. Wash, sterilize, and fill your bathtub(s) with water, as it may be needed for drinking, bathing, or flushing the toilet.

Last, look in your phone book, as many of them have sections on hurricane tips, including maps showing where the flood zones are.
