Ch-ch-ch CHIA!!
Would you... have you... ever given or received one of these delightfully tacky and gauche things as a gift?

The perfect "re-gift". (IOW: "Some jerk who doesn't like me gave this to me as a gift. I'm giving it to you so that you can give it to someone that you don't like either.") :-)

4. What brings this up? Is Christmas at our throats again?
I secretly have always wanted one, because I would like the fresh source of alfalfa sprouts, but I bought a terra cotta plant saucer to try and the sprouts tasted like terra cotta. I live in Florida so sprouts rot when you go to work, unless you are running a cold air conditioner all day while you are at work. Just can't take that extra step of getting a chia pet.

5. When Split Enz Was Popular
their record company designed some that when grown properly, you had a weird 80's punk hairdo going on. Mine did not grow very well, but it was a conversation piece.

6. Yep
I have given and received chia creatures for gifts. For awhile when I was in college they gained cult status on my campus. In case you were wondering, you can dampen a baseball cap, put the seeds on it, and make a wearable chia hat. Do I even need to mention that I went to a small school with little to do?

7. I actually bought one for myself.
It was kinda fun for a one time novelty. I guess whoever hates me, hates me enough to not even give me one. :-)

8. My mother says the Chia seeds give off poisonous gases
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 08:34 PM by roughsatori
I am NOT kidding. I bought one and she would not let be bring it into her house.

Edited to add: She has never been in a mental hospital or received treatment for any mental disability.

9. I'm embarassed that I know this.
Firstly, chia seeds are not poisonous in any way. In fact, they were cultivated as a food source by indigenous peoples in N and S America for who knows how long. They are very nutritious. In fact, chia seeds are an endurance food. Legend has it that Indians could run all day on a tablespoon of chia seeds.

I discovered chia through a horrible web accident. I ordered some. They're kind of weird they take on a thick, sticky, gelatanous coating, made up of mainly water. It's how this desert plant survives. I ordered some to take on my impending two month backpacking trip. I don't think I would order any more, but I have 'em, so I'll take 'em.

If you're into weird foods items this would be a cool one to investigate. Supposedly, it makes a good fat substitute in cakes and stuff. Hey, do your own research, dammit.

13. I just did some research on Chia seeds
I found this: "For an authoritative source on chia seeds, read "The Magic of Chia" by Jim Scheer." Now I'm wondering if you are Jim Scheer's doppleganger. :)

11. Our family has one
only I'm not sure who exactly has possesion of it at the moment. I'll know for sure around Xmas time when one unsuspecting member receives it. Heck, I may even get it this year.

Got to love the owner of that company. I figure he works about two months a year, and plays golf the rest of the time. Oh, I guess he has to meet the cargo containers from Asia in July or so, then make a few calls to line up the TV ads, then gets a few temps to work the warehouse....What a great scam, is this America, or what!
