Things from the past that you wish were still around.
We, of course, can't stop progress and naturally, wouldn't want to.

BUT....There are also things from the past that however or whoever
changed them, really did a dis-service to our culture.

Mine: I remember as a boy going into a store and ordering a Malted Milkshake...
The server would fill this large stainless steel container with REAL ice cream, Milk and malt and blend it into a delicious mess!

They would serve it in a huge glass and leave the container (which was still half full....Yum, Yum, Yum...

Now I ask for a shake and the person sticks a plastic cup under a "Milk-Product" monstrosity and it goes SPLAT!!...oh well..sigh.

What things from the past do you wish were still around or popular?

4. Could not agree more. First thing that popped in my head.
Probably the Golden Age of the American nation, the late 90s.
Low unemployment, no major economic problems, prosperity.
Remember when oral sex with an intern was the biggest crisis in our nation?
Oh, for the good old days.

7. And the economy was so good when Clinton was getting blow jobs!
So all we really need in a leader is a guy to get a hummer every now and then.

Heck, I know a few guys who wouldn't mind that, lol.

You could get a large frosty mug of really good root beer for a dime and the carhop would bring it to your car on roller-skates in some places,

Watching the Ed Sullivan Show, then Bonanza on sunday nights.

House calls by doctors.

Drug store soda fountains.

No meat on fridays (yeah I'm catholic).

25 cent saturday matinees, usually horror or hercules movies.

The whole family sitting around the B&W TV watching Jackie Gleason on saturday night.

Stingray bikes.

Neighborhood Variety stores(you could buy anything there).

Polio vaccination centers

"Creepy Crawlers" and the "Thing Maker".

The joy of having a whole 15 cents to buy an italian ice from the ice cream man(popsicles were 7cents).

"Ramblers" made by American Motors.

My parents bringing us kids to the drive-in movie in PJ's and letting us play on the swings/monkey bars before the movie started.

Like when I was a kid I would go to the beer store with my dad....you would walk up to the counter...there was nothing but a counter. and say what you wanted..then he would get on a mic, and tell someone out back what to get. Then it would be sent up front on rollers. I miss that. Although it is THE STUPIDEST SYSTEM FOR DOING ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD!

8. three stations on the tv
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 07:49 PM by Cheswick
it seems like there was more of interest to watch then.

What else? I wish the air in the mountains smelled as fresh now as it did then.

I wish I could still dance for hours, drink have sex and still get up in the morning for work.

I wish I could still wear overalls, a peasant blouse, boys converse sneakers, a braid down the middle of my back, dangly earings, no makeup and feel completely beautiful.

I miss the days when kids could leave the house in the morning, come home at dusk and no one's mother freaked out. They knew we were playing some elaborate fantasy game we created like Indian tribe, wolf pack or TV Secret Spys (I was the only blonde so I always got to be Honey West and I had the costume too!)

Small schools where all the teachers knew your parents and you couldn't get away with ANYTHING DAMNITALL!

28. Oh man, these are all very evocative replies for me
Especially the one about wooden floors creaking. I am drunk on a wave of nostalgia now. I can add:

Milkmen: who left milk, eggs, cream, butter, cottahe cheese, whatever was considered "dairy" on your doorstep early in the morning. The milk was in thick glass bottles with cardboard stoppers. For a time, we saved the stoppers because they each had a crude drawing of one of the presidents and I managed to collect them all.

S&H Green Stamps: my mom bought tons of things with those stamps. They even had their own special showroom near the Grand Union.

Mallo-Cups coupons of value. When I was a kid, if you collected $5 worth of their cardboard money you could send for a box of Mallo-Cups. Now I think they send you a dollar-off coupon if you send in something like a million bucks worth.

Fizzies: My mom wouldn't let us drink soda cuz it "rots your teeth." So we had Fizzies which were little flavored, non-medicinal Alka-Selzer-like disks. Drop one in a glass of water and it would fizz and dissolve until you had a suger-free soda. I often enjoyed just plopping on dry in my mouth to feel the effervescence on my tongue.
Fizzies disappeared with the ban on cyclamates, which I think are actually safer than aspartame.

I could go on....

A REAL malt is, as you said, made from milk and real ice cream with chocolate malt powder. It is the consistency of melted ice cream, only with lumps in it. There is nothing finer.

42. People Who Use Their Brains & Other Stuffs
I miss parents who didn't feel the urge to sue makers of child bathtub-seats because they left the kid unattended, while they took a phone call, to fall out and drown.

I miss grocery clerks who could count back change without relying on a cash register that calculated the amount for them. While we're at it, I miss baggers who understood bagging to be an art and didn't just throw shit in at random.

Back to phones, I miss people who would never imagine taking a social phone call while they were already entertaining guests, and guests who would never imagine making/taking a social phone call while they were someone else's guest.

I miss the candy store where the clerks knew the name of every kid in the neighborhood and who their parents were.

50. Payphones that accept incoming calls...
Mass-produced vinyl records...

Analogue ringers in the POTSystem, so you could actually tell when a call was connected, and how many times it was actually ringing on the other end.

Affordable stereo systems with real knobs, especially for radio tuning.

Enough AM stations for me to practice my hobby of hunting for the elusive "skip."

UHF broadcast TV, so I could use it to tell when a tornado is coming.

Wishing Well pop.

*Real* Vernor's ginger ale, not the wimpy stuff they try to pass off as Vernor's these days.

The huge market of commercial short-fiction-publishing venues that used to exist, like Amazing Stories, Galaxy, Fantasy Book, Fantastic, and otherwise, a viable mid-list in book publishing.

53. Real Vernor's?
That's a Michigan thing. Just how Canadian are you?
I miss Luigi's Pizza. It was a Saginaw chain which made these real thin, crispy pizzas that they delivered to your house in portable ovens. They were like, 400 degrees when they arrived and consistently took the skin off your upper palate on the first bite. But they were damned good -- especially the pepperoni ones.
Plus, Luigi's sponsored Big Time Wrestling (with Bob Finnegan and Lord Apple-Layton (?)) on Saturday TV. George (The Animal) Steele, The Sheik, Bobo Brazil, Flying Fred Curry, Baron von Raschke -- all those guys.
John
And cars you could fix yourself. That's another thing I miss.

70. My own Wave of Nostalgia (awesome thread, RadicalLiberal!!)
The nostalgic rush I'm getting from these responses feels too good!!

As for me, I miss:

- Buying a quarter's worth of Hersey's Kisses from the candy counter at the department store, while my mom shopped. I could barely see over the counter, and a quarter seemed like all the riches in the world to me back then.

- Drive-in movies with my dad. Especially the snack bar, and playground they always had right up front. Oh, and those speakers you hung off the car window seemed like miracles of science and wonder to us as kids.

- Riding on bikes. For hours. Do kids do this anymore?

- Chocolate milk sipped through a tiny straw out of a pint carton.

- Gas-station cola machines, the kind that sold Pepsi and Dr. Pepper and Orange Crush in BOTTLES that you had to slide out through a hole. Handy bottle opener right on the front of the machine.

- Pong, Merlin, those QuizWhiz game cartridges, and our stereo console television. :-)

- Fly strips. They were ugly, but I think they kinda worked.

- Not having air conditioning. Remember when summers were hot? How the only way to escape was the movies or the public library (our modern one, at least)? Looking back on that, I really miss it. Summers have never really felt like summer in my adulthood Or maybe that's just because I have to work all summer, now...

- When a movie of the week would come on one of the big three networks, and it was so exciting because you hadn't seen the movie since it was in the theater. The concept of renting videos was just a blip in the radar back then...

71. The Knife Sharpening Man
When I was a little kid, there was a guy who'd drive around town in a truck that had a whetstone in the back. He'd sharpen people's knives, scissors, lawn mower blades, and anything else you could think of.

It's funny...I was just thinking this afternoon that we could use a visit from someone like that!

81. Gas stations with attendants who wore a uniform
with a cap and their name stitched on their shirt. They'd fill your tank and ask to check your oil. You could then go into the office and choose from a wall full of free maps of anyplace in the 48 states.

Real telephone booths with doors and fans inside.

Those little side windows in cars that directed the breeze directly on you while driving.

Running boards.

Leather shoes that could be re-soled or re-heeled when worn out.

Real talk shows like Jack Paar and David Susskind, featuring authors and intellectuals, where substantive discussions took place, not the hawking of a star's latest film.

Teenage babysitters who earned 50 cents an hour to put the kids to bed while parents went out shopping and to shows and restaurants by themselves.

Double features at the movies that changed twice a week and were continuous on Sundays, along with short subjects, newsreels, and cartoons.

Record shops that allowed you to play the record in a booth prior to purchase.

Ocean liners to Europe. I remember driving down the West Side Highway in NYC and seeing all the liners in a row – The Ile de France, United States, Constitution, even the Andrea Doria, and the excitement of seeing someone off or picking them up.

Dramas on Broadway, not warmed over musical revivals.

Proper punctuation in national newspapers.

The phrase "You're welcome" uttered in response to "Thank you." "No problem" is NOT the correct response here, folks.

Soda fountains in drugstores.

Walter Cronkite, as mentioned above, though he still is a force to be reckoned with.

When only the repairman wore pants low-slung enough to display a bit of rear end when he bent over. Given the state of fashion these days, I've seen almost as many backsides as a proctologist has.

Enforcement of environmental regulations.

When public office was a Bush-free zone.

102. What I miss most is...
Respect. When I was growing up we respected people and their beliefs. The scariest thing that could happen to you in school was to be sent to the Principal's office. Once in a while a "tough" kid would talk back and was sent home with a note politely requesting the parents of "tough" kid to come to school and talk about the "tough" kid.

I miss the kind of movies they made in the forties and fifties. Call me an old romantic but somehow watching Linda Darnell or Lana Turner emote on the silver screen with gorgeous leading men really deserve to be called classics. No navels showing those days, thank God.

I miss the old drugstore with the long marble counter where a young guy in a peaked cap (he was called a soda jerk) made drinks like lemon phospates and green rivers. Never cared much for malteds.

I loved frilly dresses and proper white gloves and hats perched on the back of the head.

I still miss the smell of leaves burning in the Fall...and when I was little my Dad would make a huge pile of them for me to jump into.

I could make a really long list but I would still have to put Respect at the top. That is something I really miss.

That's easily on top of my list. Drive-in movies would be nice too. Silver certificates. 3-cent postage. The right to burn leaves in the yard. The junkman. Wood in convenience stores (wood shelves, wood floors, wood smell). The milkman. Legal riding of bicycle on sidewalk. Cars you could stand up in. Hats and gloves. My first husband. Cops walking their beat. Airports where everyone knows you. Doctors doing house calls. One phone company. And about ten million dollars.
