I can last about three minutes, then it's time to start screaming.

3. I'm not either
It may have had something to do with being forced by my divorced parents to call the other one up and relay messages that the other one would be upset about and then them both getting angry at me about what each other were saying. I always get extremely nervous when I have to talk on the phone. I hope that you do not have an equally traumatic reason for not liking phones.

12. Almost same senario..'cept..
...mine was an abstentee dad and if he were to ever call, it would to be to ask 'for something'..money, a place to stay, meet his new girlfriend....I was scared to death that he would call; I would never know what to say....This kind of 'thing'... stays with you for a life-time. I do not like answering the phone and I do not like talking on the phone, either.

We are Maternalus of Borg. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. We shall send you on the everlasting guilt trip. We are Maternalus of Borg.

I hate to talk on the phone. In fact, I have destroyed two or three of them in frustration and I am not the type to act out violently. The only items I've destroyed in anger in my life: my brother's walkie-talkies when I was about eleven or twelve; a few phones; and recently, a Ronald Reagan biography.

I was provoked. Ronnie smirked at me. Really.

I went over to my mother's house to fix her computers. She was in a bad mood and was playing right-wing televangelists on TV. The Reagan book sitting next to one of the computers sent me over the edge.

41. As a guy...
My normal phone conversations are about 30 seconds long. Transfer necessary information and hang up.

My next-door neighbour has a terrible habit of phoning me about some problem, and then going on about her private life for the next ten minutes without drawing breath. Drives me insane.

There's only one person I enjoy spending time with on the phone - with them I have no problems at all. :loveya:

9. Me.
Almost to the point of phobia. I have let people slip from my life that I regret because I won't pick up a phone to contact them. Right now, I'm about 2 months late on a phone call to a family member, and 2 weeks late connecting with a friend, but I don't want to make the calls.

I hate the phone with a passion.

30. Yeah, I'd much rather people e-mail me.
E-mails aren't so invasive and--unless you have an annoying talking voice telling you about your newest messages--downloading e-mail messages is soundless.

I think the annoying ring has something to do with it...and not knowing who's on the other end.

well, almost!

I don't even answer it. I let a machine answer it. Even if it's a friend, I don't return the call. I will answer emails immediately, however.

lwolf, why am I not surprised to see you here!

I once read where people who hate the phone are the best communicators. They subconsciously hate the phone because they cannot avail themselves of the body language part of communication.

Whatever. Phone conversations bore me.

14. My father did business on phone so we were told to stay off.
Egg timer sat next to phone and we did not dare often to return it over. We were in real troble if someone called and told my father phone was busy. We also had to stand phone watch and take calls for my fathers business. Answer service did not come into late in high school and it was a very costly thing. So I am not and never been a phone person.I have never really heard anything very important said on the GD thing.

17. Not a chatty kathy
either. I tend to only talk when I have something to say, or the conversation is especially relaxed (face2face) and I feel like I can get a word in edge-wise.

I tend to want to talk more around the arts, ideas, concepts, etc. (you know, the deep meaningful stuff) rather than gossip or just general chit-chat.

31. No kidding.
I have a friend--more of an acquaintance, really--who talks nonstop and never says much of anything. Unfortunately, she's also not terribly bright. How often do those two traits go hand-in-hand?

She's struggling financially. It's not her fault she's disabled and I've given her more money than I can afford in order to help her out. I just don't usually enjoy her company. I don't want to hurt her feelings. It think a lot of it has to do with the fact that incessant talkers send my anxiety levels through the roof. If they go on and on about topics I consider boring, I feel obligated to pay attention anyway. It's energy lost.

34. I can relate
It's good of you to help your friend, I'm sure she appreciates it.

I just don't usually enjoy her company.... a lot of it has to do with the fact that incessant talkers send my anxiety levels through the roof. If they go on and on about topics I consider boring, I feel obligated to pay attention anyway. It's energy lost.

I feel the same way about my sister in law. I love her, but I have to control how much time we spend together because I feel absolutely drained, spent afterwards. She is somewhat mentally ill and feels compelled to go on and on about her latest problems, treatments, etc.

I'm very sensitive and empathetic. Listening to someone else, it's way too easy for me to take on the emotions they are describing. Buy the time they're done, I feel like everything they've talked about has happened to me personally. Not really, of course. But I get the same emotional wallop.

The best description I have come across for this phenomenon has been recently. The writer was talking about extroverts effect on introverts. The effect was one of having spent the day giving blood. LOL! That's such an apt image. I don't know who wrote that, wish I could find the link again.

I hate cell phones especially. Everyone says they need it because *insert reason here*, but the world was fine without them.

And I haven't had a phone in my room for 3 years now, I don't keep a wireless phone in here, and I don't want one.

My girlfriend objects profusely, though.

After years in business, with multiple lines in my home office, a headset and speed dialer, and cell phones in the pocket and car, when I "retired", I dumped them all. I now detest talking on the phone, and warn all who know me to not expect "good conversation" from me if they phone. What a pleasure not to have to talk on the phone!!

32. Caller ID!!
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 06:28 AM by Booberdawg
Along with a message machine - It's a wonderful thing!

I rarely answer my phone. I got that way after the fucking telemarketers got so hot and heavy a couple years ago. But - you can always LOOK at the caller ID and decide whether to take the call. If it's a friend or family member you can always wait for the message and call back and it always makes the conversation shorter.

A little trick I learned taking irate customer calls several years ago - call them back prepared and when they are not all huffed up and loaded for bear. It works the same for people who want to talk your leg off. Although - there are some people who I would always allow, under any circumstances, to talk my leg off - that's what the caller ID is for .....

I'm not much for small talk. Sometimes, I just can't think of anything that's worth saying. The result is long, uninterrupted silences over the phone. Ugh. I suppose it's MY problem, but I still don't like talking over the phone. I have a big mouth on paper or on these boards, however. This stuff, I can edit!

Ever since I got my cell phone with unlimited minutes, I regularly use the phone for 4000 or 5000 minutes a month. All my relatives live in other states, so the only way I can keep up with their goings-on is to talk on the phone.

I expect my phone usage will go way down when I move back to Philly in November.

And yes, I am one of those people whom you see constantly talking on her cell phone in public--although I DON'T talk loudly enough for others to be subjected to my conversation.

Go ahead and flame me!

45. I associate phones with bad news, for the most part...
...as well as awkward silences and struggling to think of topics for conversation.

There are a few exceptions to the above rule. I like calling one of my aunts, as she is the mistress of the 10-minute catch-up conversation. Letters aren't an option for her these days, and we can't talk her into e-mail (several of us have tried), so it's to the phone I go.

50. The only reason I even HAVE a phone...
...is in case I have to call 911. I went for almost two years without owning one until the boss at my last job starting complaining that he couldn't reach me.

And those long, awkward pauses are pure torture. That's the thing with the phone, the only thing you can do with it is TALK. So if you're not talking you're just sitting there holding this thing to your ear. I use the phone to make plans to meet in person and talk face to face.
