Who'll stop the rain?

Maison trof needs a new roof. 5 pallets (200 bundles/50 squares) have been sitting on the front sidewalk for a week. The roofers are itching to get started.
And it rains. And rains. And rains.

There's a huge green dumpster on the front lawn ready to receive the old shingles and underlayment. For some reason there are no drain holes in the bottom. It's becoming a swimming pool/mosquito ranch. I pump it out every morning.

This is the wettest summer in coastal Alabama that even the old timers can remember. Sometimes it comes from the west; sometimes it comes up from the south, off the gulf.
Wherever it comes from, it comes. Daily. Sometimes twice and thrice daily. Blub.

Footnote - a short course on roofing materials:
Fiberglass composite shingles are rated 20, 25, 30, etc. Supposedly the number of years they'll last or are guaranteed for (but not really). The roofers opine that the current shingles are 20s or 25s. They are curling and cupping and we have a few leaks. The roof is about 13 years old. The roofers recommend 30 year "architectural" shingles as replacement. They'll last much longer.

I visit our local Lowes to pick a color and style. I discover that there are also 40s and 50s available. 30s are guaranteed in winds to 70 MPH. That's important in our hurricane prone area. The 50s are guaranteed to 90 MPH. They cost $1.00 per bundle more than the 30s. This is a no-brainer. We got the 50s.

1. If you have the funds and plan to stay where you are, get a

metal roof.

3. Thanks. Looked at that.

It is a lot more expensive. If I were in my 30s I might consider it. I'm 62, so this will be a "lifetime" roof for me. My heirs can deal with it after that.

2. Buy a tarp

Buy a tarp to cover your dumpster, it will save you a little work. I think you can buy some stuff to put in there that will kill misquito larva. You really have to watch out- the west nile virus is alive and well up here in southern middle Tennessee.


Now, the dance. I don't dance very well so it may not help- maybe I could try to put on saturday night fever and do some disco moves along with Travolta. I am afraid it would cause more rain because the rain god will be laughing so hard, may start crying!

5. Rather drain it.

I think the contractor has a drill beefy enough to punch a couple of holes in the bottom. He rents the dumpster and was surprised that it had no drain.

Gitcher dancin' shoes on and have at it. I don't think it could get any worse. Ironically, today looks like the best day for work and it's a holiday.

Such an old question, I had to use the obvious joke.

We've had more rain this year than any summer I can remember, and I've been around for forty two summers. The grass is so tall right now, I'm going to make hay when I get around to mowing it. And it rained all night, and it's still raining this morning.

7. If you have an attic or

anything right below the roof that you value, COVER IT! I have an attic where all kinds of stuff is stored. When they did my roof they took off all the old shingles and all this black dust went down between the roof boards into the attic...all over everything. It was misery to get rid of. Also, if you have kids or pets, whtch for all the old rusty nails that get left around. Good luck and I'll pray for some sunny days!

The roof decking is plywood panels so maybe it won't be as bad. The attic space is small. I can barely stand at the peak. We have some out of season clothes up there, but all covered by plastic bags.

I'm thinking about a big bar magnet to make periodic sweeps of the surrounding area. I think it'll pick up galvanized roofing nails.

10. I Had That Problem Once

I got smart, bought some blue tarps to protect the shrubbery and catch the debris from the roofers. Cleaning up was a matter of folding up the tarps and shaking them out into 5-Gallon buckets.

11. Trof, I think you should go out and do a rain dance

preferably with some kind of Maori costume on. Then have Mrs Trof take a picture and post it here. This would make our day much brighter here on DU.

...I am looking for plans on how to build an Ark. Does anyone know how to convert cubits into English or Metric?
