My yard is infested with horny toads

they are cute little buggers! And fast! Like lizards you try to catch on the rocks or something. I like having them around.

What do you have living in your neighborhood that is nice to have around?

1. I live in downtown San Francisco

but I have hummingbirds.

We used to have alligator lizards and an occasional tortoise, but we have not seen any in YEARS :(...

6. The horse who lives next door during the summer months.

They took him away yesterday. I'm so sad. I fed him a cut up apple every morning, and then maybe a carrot when I got home from work. He'd be waiting by the fence like clockwork, and would neigh when he saw me. Now there's just the snails in the garden, and the rats that swim down in the canal in front of my house. :(

but maybe they sold it to someone that would give it a happier existence? Maybe they'll replace it too. If not, look for toads or frogs or those magical bugs whose butts light up!

10. Where I used to live in the Oakland Hills

Deer were the main garden pest. We also had aligator lizards. Very cute animals.

We have hummers all over Oakland, and down by the lake we have lots of black crowned night herons.

13. We have lots of precious water birds in the canals

around our nieghborhood....

Coots are my absolute favorites - intelligent, funny, feisty, fiercely loyal and caring partners and parents.
Their downside is their aggressiveness to other birds coming near their nests - I've seen them drown other ducks and ducklings for getting too close to their turf....:-(

But they are so cool, I love watching them all year long!

A pic of American Water Coots......Dutch ones are called 'Waterhoens' and are only slightly different.

which is admirable and most positive for their babies.....but heartbreaking to see other birds be the victims....:-(

20. those things are disappearing fast everywhere...

...i've never heard of an infestation of them. could you post a photo so i could see what species of horned toad they are? what part of the country are you in?

21. I don't know how to post a photo but

they are your typical, southwestern horny toads. I have families of them living in my yard. A lot of families. I even leave areas unmowed for them to hang out in. They are all the way from the size of a brick to the size of a small pinky finger. The small ones are at least 2 inches long. I never see them smaller than that.

Okay, I must disappear now - sleep for the next 14 hours.
