Need clarification- What exactly does the John Birch society
does/need/ talk about. I heard two different things.

Get the US out of the United Nations. Continue to treat black people as second class citizens?

Pretty much all of the above and then some. I was very surprised that their name wasn't widely invoked when we dissed the UN so badly re: Iraq.

If you thought the Freeps were bad . . .

On edit: typos

2. that just about everyone is a communist spy
Eisenhower and of course Clinton. They're all part of a communist conspiracy by the UN to take over the world. I don't think they talk about race issues much.

4. The John Birch Society On-Line
http://www.jbs.org/

A lot of the modern Neo-Con movement comes from the JBS. Ironic as it is, Poppy Bush got his start in politics in the early 1960s campaigning against a JBS-endorsed candidate in Texas.

Check out "The Blue Book".

John Birch was a missionary/soldier killed by the Chinese communists during the Korean War.

11. Murdered during the closing days of WWII
In August 1945 Captain John Birch was murdered by the Chinese communists but Welch promoted the idea that John Birch was the first casualty of WWIII.

5. John Birch Trivia
Robert Welch, who started the John Birch Society, was a candy manufacturer who invented Lemonheads and Junior Mints. Each of these candies' names were adopted as band names.

12. Robert was Sugar Daddy...brother James was Junior Mints!
Now that this vile family no longer owns the labels, we may enjoy all of these wonderful yummies guilt free until we visit the dentist.

Tootsie Roll Industries acquired Junior Mints from the Warner-Lambert Company in 1993. James Welch, the brother of Robert Welch (founder of John Birch Society) who originally invented the Sugar Daddy and Sugar Babies, developed Junior Mints. Launched into the market in 1949, James Welch named the candy specifically after his favorite Broadway stage performance, Junior Miss.

6. Are they still alive?
I think they began in the late 40's. John Birch was an Army Captain who was killed in China when the Communists overthrew . They have always been rabid, anti-communist wack-jobs. I think they were the ones in the 50's who said that floridated drinking water was a communist plot. At the 64 GOP convention, when the hard right took over, Nelson Rockefeller railed against John Birch Society facists. There were literally fist fights on the convention floor.

8. But they don't like John Ashcroft.
I picked up a magazine at the laundromat that had articles about the PATRIOT Act and Arschloch and the Bush Fascism, and I thought "Man, these people RAWK!"

Then I saw that it was a JBS publication.

So is the Enemy of my Enemy TRULY my "Friend"?

Scary stuff....

9. OK, now sing along with me!
The John Birch Society

Lyrics
by Michael Brown

Oh, we're meetin' at the courthouse at eight o'clock tonight
You just walk in the door and take the first turn to the right
Be careful when you get there, we hate to be bereft
But we're taking down the names of everybody turning left

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save our country from a communistic plot
Join the John Birch Society, help us fill the ranks
To get this movement started we need lots of tools and cranks

Now there's no one that we're certain the Kremlin doesn't touch
We think that Westbrook Pegler doth protest a bit too much
We only hail the hero from whom we got our name
We're not sure what he did but he's our hero just the same

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Socialism is the ism dismalest of all
Join the John Birch Society, there's so much to do
Have you heard they're serving vodka at the WCTU?

Well you've heard about the agents that we've already named
Well MPA has agents that are flauntedly unashamed
We're after Rosie Clooney, we've gotten Pinkie Lee
And the day we get Red Skelton won't that be a victory

Oh we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Norman Vincent Peale may think he's kidding us along
But the John Birch Society knows he spilled the beans
He keeps on preaching brotherhood, but we know what he means

We'll teach you how to spot 'em in the cities or the sticks
For even Jasper Junction is just full of Bolsheviks
The CIA's subversive and so's the FCC
There's no one left but thee and we, and we're not sure of thee

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save our country from a communistic plot
Join the John Birch Society holding off the Reds
We'll use our hand and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads

Do you want Justice Warren for your Commissar?
Do you want Mrs. Krushchev in there with the DAR?
You cannot trust your neighbor or even next of kin
If mommie is a commie then you gotta turn her in

Oh, we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Fighting for the right to fight the right fight for the Right
Join the John Birch Society as we're marching on
And we'll all be glad to see you when we're meeting in the John
The John, the John Birch So- ci- i- teee
