I see gay people: My Liza review
Just got back from seeing Liza Minnelli in concert.

I half expected to see a train wreck, yet one I enjoyed. I was half wrong - there was NO train wreck at all, and I enjoyed myself immensely. She sounded better than I'd heard her in years.

Granted, her show was short (an hour, including a a 10-minute costume break) and she's not in great shape - she sweats profusely and and struggles to catch her breath between songs. But the songs.... she gave 'em her all and got most of the notes right. The ones she missed, she made up for with emotion and power.

She didn't sing "New York, New York" as her regular ending - instead she sang "San Francisco", which was pretty damned good itself. The encore was an a capella version of "I'll Be Seeing You" beautifully done. When she went off course on one note, her pianist tried to join in to help her, but she waved him off, found the note and kept going. The second half of the show was all from "Cabaret", including the Lotte Lenya classic "So What" (she had previously sang the Kurt Weill beauty "My Ship"), "Maybe This Time" and a medley of "Wilkommen" and "The Money Song", and ending with a rousing "Cabaret", which seemed to really wear her out.

She seemed to have a great time, making a few off-hand references to her last marriage and acknowledging her difficulties in the past by changing the end of "Cabaret" to "when I go, I'm NOT going like Elsie..."

So I was impressed. Her voice got stronger as the show went on. She can still entertain.

2. Good for her, I feel sorry for both her and Judy.
Hollywood had its way with both of them.

Glad to hear that she sang from the heart.

3. That Cabaret ending
is something she's been doing for years..."I'm NOT going like Elsie."

Good to know she was in good voice. I do wish the voluptuous little thing well, doncha know?

4. Yeah
the voice surprised me. It was the first time I'd seen her live, but from a few recent TV appearances and the like, I wasn't sure she had much of a voice anymore.

She's playing in San Diego, Seattle and Atlanta in the coming days. People should check it out.

8. Yeah
it's one of the greats. I was happy she sang "So What" from the play - it wasn't included in the movie.

9. Were people singing along?
I hate when people do that. One of the reasons I won't see Dave Matthews in concert any more unless I get seats that are close to the stage.

10. No
not at all. I suspect they might've had she done "New York, New York", but she did her mother's "San Francisco" instead. She said it was the first time she'd performed that song.
