Dave Matthews Band tonight!
This will be the third of their concerts that I have attended. I know some of you do not like them but I always have. Both my sons are also going but not with me (hey, how could I even expect that?). I do have a question though. My son says it is in bad form to wear a tee shirt with the logo of the band you are hearing. Like I care(?) but was curious. My favorite DMB long sleeve is on and not coming off. I say screw it but I would like to know just because I had never heard of anyone giving a shit what they wore to a concert.

1. I didn't know that
I woulnd't really worry about whatever 'rules' there are about what shirts to wear to a concert, though. And I know I've seen many other people doing that at concerts, so...

Whatever you wear... have fun!

:bounce:

3. I am going to have a blast!
This is the first time for me on the lawn, I bought my tickets late. I am going with a woman I have known for a long time but do not know her at all well, we should have fun though. I figure I am 50 years old, if I gave a shit about what I wear to a rock concert it would be pretty sad but I really thought that was a stupid thing when he looked at me and rolled his eyes (you know the look).

2. Since your sons aren't going to be with you
I say wear the shirt.

I've seen DMB twice. The show is always good but I somehow always get seated by druken and horny folks who have no qualms about making out right out there in public.

Enjoy the show! :)

5. ALWAYS!
I don't know what it is about that crowd. My youngest got peed on a couple of years ago. His neighbor just whipped it out and peed on my sons leg. I had a guy come bursting into the stall in the womans room. I have been to a lot of concerts but these are different for some reason. Only once have I ever encountered anything like it and that was Jethro Tull many years ago inside a theater and some dumb shit threw whole rolls if lit firecrackers into the lower rows where we were. Ian Anderson got pissed and left. I guess I would rather get peed on.

7. Peed on? Oh, that's great
I get a little bit aggravated at the things that go on at the larger, outdoor venues. I have been going to smaller clubs lately.

The last DMB concert we attended was a bit more, um, interesting than the first one but the band always puts on a show.

12. More interesting?
Did you mean the crowd or the band? I would love to see them in a different venue, or maybe just one of the Dave/Tim Reynolds concerts in a hall.

15. The crowd was more interesting
I think that there was something in the air. Well, there was according to Mr. Arnheim who recognizes those types of smells! ;)

The show was actually a little more interesting. They had some visual elements that I liked. They also jammed more in the second show than in the first one. So, that was cool.

As we all were at that age. Wear the shirt. Since you won't be with your sons you'll be able to smoke a joint openly!

6. Wellll,
I gave that up years ago. I find that is a real plus at a concert, you get to get stoned without having to pay for it. If one comes my way I will toke in your honor.

9. That will be a fun show. I've seen those guys a few times
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 01:38 PM by GumboYaYa
and never have been disappointed, but I have seen some shows that were clearly better than others. I prefer the ones were he goes outside the box and shows off how good that band is.

Who is opening? Last year Emmy Lou toured with him. Brady Blade ended up playing with Emmy Lou and Dave on that tour.

10. HI GUMBO!!!!!!!!!
I missed last year but by the time they were here it was not Emmy Lou or I would have staged a major something or other to get in. Tonight it is the Graham Colton Band and I know nothing about them and have not even had the time to look them up. Tonight it will be cool outside so we may really see a good concert, it is usually killer hot when they come. Funny, the very first time I saw them the opening band was Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Started my huge effort to follow them. I have seen them or one of them about 6 times, met them a few months ago. I am always hopeful that the opener will be good. I would have loved to hear Brady play. BTW, my sons recorded a CD yesterday, mostly of tunes my youngest wrote. I am stunned by the advancement I can hear in them, one day I will be going to their concerts I am certain.

20. I find some of the best new bands by showing up to hear the
opening acts. I discovered Los Lonely Boys that way. Bela Fleck as an opening act must have been a "few" years ago. Those guys are headliners everywhere they go these days.

From what I know about yur sons, their taste in music, and their musical background, I'm certain we will both be seeing them in concert.

Have fun tonight. The weather could not be better if you guys are getting the same weather we have in St. Louis.

I think we are going to come over to KC to see Herbie. I'll keep you posted as we get closer to the show.

23. Hooray! Dinner is on me!
Let me know, it is only 8 months away or so. My son wants to try to get a lesson with Brian if at all possible, if not we now have a CD once it is finished. If you are interested I'll send you a copy once it is done. They recorded in my basement last night.

We saw Bella Fleck with them in 2000. I had never heard of them at that time, nobody was there to see them so we went up front and it was amazing.

27. If Brian is playing with Herbie, I will make sure that your son
gets a chance to meet him and play with him. Brian is really good about spending time with younger drummers.

Send me a copy of the CD when they are happy with it. I know how long it takes mixing and remixing sometimes to get it just the way you want.

30. My son
will be thrilled, I can't tell you how much. Both of them love him, he is my bass player son's favorite drummer and my drummer son loves him too and listens carefully to everything he does.

I will do that, you are so kind, it would be nice to have an outside opinion if you are so inclined.

13. Have a wonderful time...
I don't think this crowd will even notice what everyone is wearing! (maybe if you go in your birthday suit, but then your children might be happy with the idea of the tee shirt with the logo)

I'll be thinking about what a wonderful time you are having - and the spirit of the revolution that has come to our country. (can't help but wonder what a tour of this type supporting Bush would be like)

Hope you post the outcome and the experience tomorrow.

Peace!

19. Has anyone that you know...
..who doesn't like Dave Matthews ever articulated exactly why they don't like him? I've noticed that a lot of people say that they don't like him and sometimes I get the feeling that it is just some strange thing that has "caught on", like it's "cool" to not like Dave Matthews or something.

22. It's one of two things....
Sometimes he plays more of his pop tunes and people complain that it is too "poppy." Or he goes off and improvises showing the amazing talent of the band and it is too "weird." It just shows you that you can never please everyone.

25. Are you talking about when he plays in concert?
Because it's one thing to say that you don't like to hear a particular singer/band in concert but it's another thing to say that you just don't like them, period? The people that I've heard who say that they don't like DM seem to be saying that they just don't like him at all.

26. I have to admit
I hated the CD "Everyday". It just did not sound like the band, it was poppish but that didn't make it bad. It was just not for me. I love when they stretch out.

of that song I know is only Dave and his guitar so I can't tell you. When I say that I mean jamming, letting the musicians all stretch out with solos.

32. Oh...
...I got a different impression of the phrase "stretch out". It made me think of a song that is long and languid and relaxed. That's how I perceive "Some Devils".

The CD material does not do justice to the talent level in the band.

33. True
but there is nothing like those CD's in your car singing along! Whoopee, people probably think I am down right nuts driving down the road singing my heart out. I love the live CD's. I think it was in Chicago they recorded a version of "Seek Up" and you can hear the crowd and it is just mind blowing. One of my all time favorite songs.

35. MuseRider, a few years ago at Jazzfest we had managed to snake
our way down to the front of the Acura Stage for the Meters set. The Meters came on and were wailing that day. My wife and I were shaking everything the we got and low and behold who pops up next to us dancing but Dave Mathews. He danced next to us for the whole set. We were all into the music so much and I didn't want to step on his good time, so we hardly talked except to comment on how the Meters were jamming. Apparently, he is a giant jazzfest fan.

It would be hard for me not to step on Dave, at least to thank him for all the pleasure he has given me over the years. What a story. I have not heard the Meters but my son did while there and he liked them, he loves their CD that he has. God how I love the jazzfest!

24. I think it might just
be the usual, they just don't care for their music. I have defended them as musicians a couple of times. As a musician in a family of musicians I have a lot of respect for them and I do know music. Lyrics are often kinda strange and Dave's voice may not be the best but I like it. As musicians they are great and I love the tightness of their music. I have loved them from the first time I heard them.
