Another tech question - about wav files.
My work comes over my computer in a wav file. Something is screwing things up and eating up the file space and saying there is a wav file already running that is taking up all this room and not allowing my work wav to run. I asked the office computer guy (think SNL skit) how to find out on my computer what wav files are running and he said he didn't know. Suggested I do control-alt-delete and see what programs are running but did not know which one would have a wav file running. How do I figure this out? I'm out of work until I can get this resolved.

1. What programs do you have running?
Real Audio? Windows Media Player? Does it happen online or off-line or both?

Are you using some kind of wav file editor like Cakewalk?

When you boot up, does it start happening immediately?

4. It is on line
because my work comes over the internet. I don't know what Cakewalk is. It is not just when I boot up. I cannot get the wav file to play. When I press the foot pedal to play I get this message:

Command: 'play'
MCI wave error (320): MMSYSTEM320 All wave devices that can play files in this format are in use. Try again when a wave device is free.

7. found this after googling 'mmsystem320'
When I try to run the training, I receive the error message: "mmsystem320: All wave devices that can play files in this format are in use. Try again when the wave device is free. Your sound card is in use by another application; try again when the sound card is available."
Usually steps 2 and 3 below will resolve this issue.

Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base at

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;rid;kbinfo

and search for article Q177038. This will explain how to verify whether or not an Intel RSX 3D audio component is installed on the computer.
If an RSX 3D component is not installed, then you need to press the CTRL + ALT + DEL keys to see a list of programs that may be running in the background. Even though no programs may appear to be open, sometimes a component of the program will continue to hold on to a wave device, etc. causing other programs to see the device as being used.
Select End Task for any audio related programs that may be in that list (Real Player, etc.)

13. How do you tell if they are audio related?
They just list abbreviations of the programs with no audio icon.

14. It's a limited number
but intermittent problems are not normally software. The audio hardware could be generating the bogus "in use" flag.

2. Reboot
A wav file could use Windows Sound Recorder or any other audio application.

6. the file you're attempting to open may be corrupt..
have someone at work verify that they can open it. Either that, or you have a virus. Make sure your OS has been updated with the latest security patches, download the latest virus definitions, and do a full system scan.

3. moooooooooooooove!!!
I would suggest to you what I suggest to all of my end users, and that is save your work, and restart your machine. Often, a program that has hung up won't even show up in the Applications page of the Task Manager. You could probably kill the program from the Processes page, but would need to know specifically what program is causing the issue. Best just to play it safe and reboot.

10. disable PnP OS within BIOS..
found this on Computing.Net:

I had this very problem with a PCI64 on a fresh installation of W98, and tried everything suggested here (and more) to no avail.
Then, finally, I checked out the PnP/PCI settings in the BIOS, and for the entry "PnP OS installed", changed YES to NO. Everything is now hunky-dory.

Hope this helps someone else -- it seems to be quite a common problem, I've seen a lot of cries for help on this one, and very few answers.

Barry

Hope you're confident enough to go into BIOS, and affect the neccessary changes. Otherwise call your support techs, and have them walk you through it. It's a simple process, really.

11. Also try disabling Window's theme 'sounds'.
Control panel > Sounds.

and prevent any media players from loading at start-up.
