Company told us today there will be layoffs...

I am extremely depressed right now. I was part of the meeting where it was said "if you are in this room you have nothing to worry about." I don't know if I can bring myself to believe that as I have been lied to by too many executives.

I work for an insurance company and they have lost a couple of large groups to another insurance company. So, since they lost those two groups the revenue is not what was budgeted and so you know the drill.....workers must be shed.

It is "only" going to be 17 but still I worry. This is the FIRST time this company has had a layoff.

I am trying to remain positive and think..that if it happens I'll go back to school (on the government through retraining programs) and learn to be a coder. I am told those types of jobs are plentiful and pay well. I have worked in insurance for many years and I have a head for remembering numbers and stuff so it should be easier for me. It's a two year certificate program and can lead to managing a doctor's office. I should think that with that and my insurance experience I should be prime pickins for a doctor....Am I being too optimistic?

Help me feel more hopeful...I cannot get depressed because it would not be good.
