A page for geeks [warning : it is really gruel]
A page showing the worst cases of destroyed hardware returned to a German Computer-Hardware store. The guy making the page is a right-winger, but I visit regularly despite that.
Makes me cringe every time.

(Side Note: D.A.U. is Dümmster Anzunehmender User= dumbest possible user; a joke based on G.A.U. = Größter anzunehmender Unfall = worst-case-scenario, mostly used for nuclear power plants)

1. Interesting...
But I can't read German. I assume there are descriptions of what folks have tried.

A good site (in English, well, Aussie) is http://www.dansdata.com/ He's got a complete section on blowing up your computer.

3. thanks
And no - he only writes a lame joke about each case/ how they tried to trick him. Most can be summarized with "eeek! - too much heat-conductive paste", "eeek - RAM-module installed reversed" or "and he thought that I wouldn't spot the leftover paste on his 'new' CPU".

They really are delicate little bastards. I nicked one ever so slightly about a year ago, despite trying to be very careful and using a fair amount of thermal grease. Powered it up and poof. The tell tale smell. Fortunately, my little OEM place was cool enough to take it back.

But some of these pictures, sheesh. Someone should remind these folks tht it's unwise to work on computers after you've had too much to drink. :nopity:

5. Best results...
When using thermal grease, its best to spread it on as thinly as possible. A razorblade helps a bunch.
