Tell me
10 things that most of DU doesn't already know about you.

I'll go first:

1. I own a 2 volume copy of the OED.

2. I hold the family record highest 25 scores at three-dimensional Tetris. The nearest score trails me by over 30,000 points. Buwahaha.

3. My two favourite colours are Hunter Green and a deep blue, just the shade of lapis lazuli.

4. I bite my fingernails.

5. I believe Earnest and Julio Gallo were grape assassins.

6. My favourite drinking mug bears the Star Trek insignia.

7. I have an exceptionally poor sense of direction.

8. I adored my mother. She made everything beautiful and extraordinary even while we lived in near poverty. She was a tall woman; not in stature, in her soul.

9. As a very young girl, I had a torrid crush on our parish priest.

10. I can smell heat and cold.

3. While I listen to mostly hard rock/punk music I totally dig Euro Disco "bands" like "Ace of Base" and "Eiffel 64"...

4. I haven't always been an Atheistic Existentialist. At one time I was a Agnostic Deist/Pantheist!

5. Once bowled a 99 after the age of 18...

6. Played the trumpet and French Horn up until my Junior year in HS.

7. Have the soul (loose interpretation) of a writer but zero writing skills.

8. Can count to ten in Blackfoot Indian (Native American).

9. Can curse quite effectively in Polish.

10. Met Jean Claude van Damme in a great little Italian restaurant in Krakow, PL.

An odd grab bag of facts.

3. I was ten years old before I met someone who wasn't either Lutheran or Catholic.

1. My father was a professional boxer when he was younger.

2. I used to date one of the guys (yep I used to date a guy) who produced Tom Petty's first album. I was there for almost all the recording of that disc.

3. Although I post mostly about guitars, I was a trained classical piano player from the time I was six until I was 17. (Can barely play worth a shit now)

4. I was on the drill team.

5. I dated Hal Ashby's girlfriend WHILE he was dating her ( he was cheating on his wife)

6. I played basketball in high school.

7. I first pursued broadcasting as a career objective and when I started working on the air at a radio station, the business was so full of freaks that I THEN went to law school.

9. I used to be a very heavy drinker and coke head.

5. Me
1. I have grappled with questions about religion and God and spirituality since I was twelve, the age at which I started asking serious questions.

2. I am an anal-retentive when it comes to books. If anyone borrows a book and so much as dog ears one page I flip out.

3. I suffer from generalized and social anxiety, take 6 pills every morning so I can interact with other people, have long bouts of depression, and have few friends.

4. I am a hopeless romantic and have the tendancy to be too nice.

5. I own two electric guitars, an acoustic guitar, an electric bass, and a saxaphone.

6. I listen to Rush Limbaugh nearly every day. (That's a BIG secret)

7. My favorite movie is Love and Death.

8. My great grandfather was a surgeon in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was also a local lawyer, all of which is detailed in the two volume nineteenth-century publication History of Southeast Texas, Illustrated. One of the only copies of this book remaining is on my bookshelf (both volumes).

9. My entire family owns only white automobiles.

10. My most prized possession is my grandfather's prayer book, which was bequeathed to me upon his death by my grandmother. I keep it close to me most of the time and have been known to use it.

6. Hmmm...
...This is hard because I tend to share everything.

1. I have very cute feet, with well formed pinky toes. ;-)
2. I have always hated the taste of milk.
3. I love Hello Kitty.
4. When I was in High School I invented my own D&D style role-playing game based on The Evil Dead and played during study halls in the Math and Science Resource Center.
5. I've never been arrested or gotten any kind of ticket.
6. I was voted "Most Creative" in my High School senior class.
7. I wasn't sure if I'd passed a needed class and would get my B.A. until the day before graduation and I never told my mom or dad.
8. I once had a friend drop me off in a town I'd never been to before with my suitcase, my guitar, my teddy bear and fifty bucks and leave me there. I lived there for a year and had a great time. (Austin, Texas)
9. I almost always have lucid dreams. 75-80% of the time, I realize I'm dreaming and have some level of control over what happens.
10. I predicted my accident. About 2 weeks before the accident I turned to a co-worker and said, "I will never walk down the aisle. I'll be in a horrible car accident and I'll be in the hospital." I was in another serious car accident about 13 years ago and I predicted that one too. I was on a road trip with friends. I woke up and knew the car I was riding in that day would crash. I was going to ask a friend to switch cars with me, but then I decided I'd feel horrible if my friend was killed in a car crash so I just never said anything. After about half an hour on the road we were in a 3 car accident and my head and face got very messed up. I've predicted other things too, but I don't want to name them because it just sounds too crazy. I'm not at all interested in having the ability to predict the future, or if it's actually possible, or how it could be possible. I really just try to ignore it. And it only happens once or twice a year at the most.

34. Sometimes I feel that way...
...but mostly, I just wonder what good it does. I've never known how to deal with it other than to put it out of my mind and go on with my life. What if I'm able to predict the events because they are very important in shaping my life, and if I tried to avoid them I'd be taking myself off the path that's really best for me? It's all too confusing. I mean, on one hand, I'd rather have had my wedding and honeymoon as planned, and not lost my baby, but on the other hand, what if this experience was essential for giving us the skills for having a more enriched life and being better parents in the future?

27. Welcome back, rbnyc! It's good to see you back and in good spirits
I'm so sorry that life has been handing you such bitter lemons.;(

I have been on crutches, myself, and it really was a bitch. I was at boarding school, in the dead of winter, and it was impossible to get around. I got in trouble for skipping classes, but there were some that were just too far to crutch to. I remember once I slipped, crutching down a hill, and wiped out everyone on the sidewalk ahead of me like a bunch of bowling pins!:D

I also remember when people smoked in class. I didn't smoke then, so didn't appreciate the freedom people had back then.

Anyway, it does sound like you caused quite a scene, appropriate for a directing class! LOL! :7

that you have returned with your sense of humor intact. I will never forget the time at my boarding school when there was a fire drill, during lunch, and I sat there, unable to move, with my crutches ten feet away. Fortunately, it was only a drill and my friend came back for me. I have found, though this was a long time ago, I have not forgotten and still often head for the handicapped stall in the ladies' room. LOL!

Welcome back and to a complete and speedy recovery, rbnyc!:toast:

11. For myself
1. I own a one-volume copy of the OED, complete with it's own magnifying glass. It's so cool! I've always wanted one and am totally geeked out by having it.

2. I enjoy erotic fiction.

3. My best possessions are my books and my records and CDs. Can't live without books and music.

4. I'm a foodie. I enjoy trying new foods and new restaurants. But haven't been able to indulge the habit being laid off and all. :shuffles dirt:

5. I'm moody, sometimes prefering to stew in silence rather than talk to somebody. This is not always an admirable trait. I would dearly love it if there were someone in my life who could say "what's up with you?" when I get like that.

6. Really becoming a red wine freak. I try to always have a bottle on hand.

7. I have an excellent sense of direction. Even if I get lost, I can always backtrack.

8. I enjoy films to the point where I'm contemplating studying how to make them. This is an offshoot of not being able to find a job the past year. I might as well go a completely different direction and learn something new.

9. I love my little niece like there's no tomorrow. :loveya: She's 16 mos old and looks like a blonde Betty Boop.

10. Currently on my nightstand: The Book of J by Harold Bloom, The Plains of Passage by Jean Auel, The Grass Crown by Colleen McCollough.

118. There was a guy who worked for NBC or CBS
I can't remember. I think it was NBC and he did the best documentay films for the news. You never saw him. He simply asked the questions and let the people answer. He was great during the first gulf war.
Because he left out all the dramatics, his reports always ended up being interesting and moving.
I have always though making a Doc would be great fun and a great way to get a message across.

23. DU don't know nuthin' about me
1. I eschew double negatives

2. I'm really busy right now, so I apologize for not being around much to insert random yak references into inappropriate stages of serious discussions (make up your own yak-insertion story here....I'm too tired, dammit, I already toldja...stop nagging me!)

3. I'm very even-tempered.

4. I found my virginity.

5. I lost my marbles.

6. I've dived with sharks while bleeding. Ask me anything.

7. I walked all night in LA once, 'til I hit the coast at sunrise. Then, for no particular reason.......

8. I've almost died more times than I remember, but I never did die, so it's obvious that I'm immortal.

9. I've been 'bitten' by a rhinoceros beetle. And a kangaroo.

10. I'm finding it hard to think of ten without revealing what I do, where I live, and who I am. :-) Let's see.....yes!....I've got one: I have very flexible wrists and ankles. Your handcuffs can't hold me! :-D

Oh, wait....now I can think of all sorts of stuff - thinking about being handcuffed must have really cleared my mind.....

Let's try this again:

1. I am fascinated by predatory animals

2. My favorite color's blue

3. I need to study Chinese martial arts, a need that started many years ago and that only grows keener

4. When I was a kid I used to think that yogurt tasted like vomit, but one day - in my teens - my father brought home a bunch of yogurts (I think someone gave them to him, for some reason) and it was love at first bite

5. I lay on Elvis' bed in his jet, the Lisa Marie (and I'd possibly be up for a bit of laying on Lisa Marie, if she was amenable)

6. I've swum with two naked French women, one of them a lesbian (long story :-) )

7. Almost two decades ago I slept next to a lovely young woman, while wearing only one of her nightdresses (hey! it was flannel, and she said it was very practical), maximally turned on, and I didn't touch her....even when she, late in the night, muttered to herself "I'm going to go nuts if I don't get it." I was so intent on not misinterpreting signals and proving myself an unenlightened chauvinist pig that I failed to recognize her seething lust. Yes, I was that dense. She did, however, fail to define the 'it' that she wanted as a balm to her sanity, so I can't take all the blame here. And by the time I realized that she wanted me - days later - she didnt want me any more. :-) And I could have jettisoned my virginity a whole six months earlier if I hadn't been so incredibly.....you supply the word. I imagine that she ran off to join a convent soon after.

8. I've broken (going head to toe, not chronologically or in order of pain):

(i) my nose

(ii) my left arm (more than once)

(iii) my right arm? (maybe I'm thinking of one of my left breaks)

(iv) probably a finger on my right hand (never had it checked out)

(v) my ribs (left side - a few of them)

(vi) my left leg (I don't think I've done my right...it's all a blur, especially with non-breaking injuries thrown in)

I think that's it. Fewer than Evel Knievel, but probably more than Britney Spears.

9. I never liked people calling their parents "the old man," "the old woman, "the olds," etc - I was always close to mine, as long and as far as I've lived apart from them. I'd be hesitant to call my girlfriend or wife "the old lady," too, even if she was perched on top of a Harley (and she'd better not be, because I prefer Japanese bikes and that'd mean that she was fixing to be some hogmeister's old lady).

10. I've never been to a strip bar or similar establishment. Probably just as well.....sounds like the ultimate torment for me, anyway. I've been married - what do I need the 'tease' for, with no possibility of touching the goodies, anyway? How extraordinarily redundant. :-)

That's my ten. the first ten were warm-up, because I was deliriously tired. And now I'm tired again.

43. Ouch. My commiserations
It's a little bit painful, isn't it?

The weird thing is, though I was prone to nosebleeds as a kid, it didn't bleed. I was 13 or 14 and did it while working on somersault - did the move fine but, on landing, something went awry and my knee impacted my face in a rather spectacular fashion.

84. Ten things about me
Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 08:47 AM by nuxvomica
1) I scored in the 99th percentile on the Miller Analogies Test so I can spot a false analogy a mile away.
2) The claw on the small toe of my right foot fell of recently, revealing a perfect little toenail.
3) I have never broken any of my bones. *knock on wood*
4) I was once trashed by the National Enquirer.
5) I have two patents pending that I don't think will make it.
6) I hate hate hate to shop in malls.
7) I have scoliosis.
8) I'm an empiricist and I believe rationalism has ruined science.
9) I lived through the '60s and remember the '60s but I don't remember most of the '80s.
10) I have read Muldoon and Carrington and have had two OOBEs.

edit: this was supposed to be a reply to the original post but I somehow got stuck on Gump's reply.

31. SOteric, are you British, Canadian, Irish or what? by birth?
I can't help noticing all those "-ours" where most of us would have "-ors."

That's one thing I don't know about you that intrigues me.

Here's my list:

1. I have an identical twin brother.

2. I'm Swedish-Ukrainian...or Slavic mix. My mother's father's mother came from the Carpathian mountains, was fluent in Ukrainian, but may have been Romanian, actually. Her mother's parents were from near Kiev.

3. Burt Worm is a pseudonym. I've had it since I was 17.

4. I used to post on Usenet in political groups as xofpi.

5. I was in the first incarnation of a band that achieved minor cult status in Boston, circa 1980. We were known as the Wank Stains. They became the Stains, then Ice Age.

6. I smoke.

7. I drink my coffee black.

8. I feel naked.

9. I used to edit True Detective and several other true crime magazines. It was my favorite job.

10. I also own a two volume set of the OED.

46. I was born
in San Francisco, California. Both of my parents were born and raised in Parma, Italy and immigrated to the US only a few years before my brother and I were born.

The Commonwealth spellings are owing to my schooling. I did not attend public schools but was educated by the Jesuits. My instructor in spelling and grammatics was an Irish priest, Father Myron Murphy.

Possibly I would have overcome the tendency toward Commonwealth spellings during my time at prep school. My first professor of English and Grammatics at university was a tyrannical Brit, however, with a rigid definition of what constituted "English."

I've lived around American spellings all my life, and now and again they make their way into my thinking. But the influence of my teachers has been so complete that most words seem wrong to me if spelt otherwise.

38. There's Something About Tucker...
Okay, there are ten things about me. Maybe. *If* I can think of ten things I haven't whined endlessly about yet!

1. I spend way too much time wondering if getting a boob job would solve all my problems, thinking that my life would be perfect if I'd been blessed with good looks, and being terrified that people find me repulsive.

2. I have more dreams about getting unusual pets far more often than ones about falling in love.

3. I have a "thing" about pens. I get hooked on one particular brand of pen and I get very possessive of them. Currently, my pen of choice is the Pilot Precise V5, because of its ultra-smooth writing-feel and good balance. Plus it produces a variable and sensitive line that can be used for sketching as well as writing. I think all Pilot pens are pretty good, followed by Sanford and Pentel, with Bic way way down there.

4. Snow makes me depressed. Even if I don't have to shovel it, just seeing snow can send me into an awful mood.

5. I like to save my money next to my bed, rather than in a bank. It sounds weird, but there's something about having it physically *there* that is more reassuring than having numbers in a book.

6. I've been taking ephedrine to stay awake during morning shifts. It's the only thing that keeps me up and alert--and it puts me in a good mood, too. (My blood pressure's fine and I don't exceed recommended dose, so I should be safe).

7. I like it when people touch me. Doesn't have anything to do with sex--I like getting a hug from Ulex and the RepubRoomie in the morning when I go to work and at night when I go to bed. And I really like it when we play-fight, or when RepubRoomie pretends to sit down on top of me. It's silly and childish, but I like it.

8. I have my rat's cage right next to my bed, so I can talk to my rat before I go to sleep.

9. I delight in surprising people.

10. I'm embarrassed at how poorly I've retained my skills in Spanish. Though I can make myself understood, I find myself forgetting simple things like when to use "por" and "para" and how to make the past tenses of certain verbs. I'm secretly as insecure about my mind as I am about my body...

Tucker

That's me. I'm very fit and have very low bodyfat%, so the boobies r gone. I've spent hours thinking about it too. I've been offered modeling jobs (fitness publications)and then they end up going with girls w/big boobs (they don't even look all that fit). It gets a little depressing at times, especially when u r too poor to pay for it anyway.

Sorry to drone on, just wanted u to know u r not the only one who spends time thinking about this.

65. I warned you
This is what happened (I warned you)

Me and my dive team were briefed on a dive job with some unfamiliar equipment, training on how to set it up, how deep, how long and what decompression table we were going to use for the saturation dive. Blew down in a can (saturation habitat) got into a bell (dive bell) went to work, came back up, back in the can (this went on for a few days) and by the time I got out of the can (decompression) we were back in port. Wasn't till a few years later that I figured out that we installed a parell relay transmitter and encryption unit(read "phone bug" aka "wire tap") on a russian layed trunk line (a cable as round as a 55 gallon barrel.)

At the time it was a job like any other. (except that we were using some one else's non US ship which was kinda wierd, and now I know why.) No cloak and dagger crap, or KGB divers with spear guns after me. Just another boring ass job that just happened to be kind of interesting later in life.

70. Great thread
Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 01:03 AM by Forkboy
DUers are just too cool!

1-I'd give up everything (sadly even my wife) to be the first person to set foot on Mars.Even if it means dying there.

2-I used to street fight for money.(And the way things are going I may have to again)

3-I have 24 of the 27 Godzilla movies ever made.

4-Even though I'm a punk/thrash/noise fan I still think Cheap Trick is one of the greatest bands ever.

5-I had no parental supervision from the age of 10 on.In fact I rarely saw either of my parents.(We all get along fine now).

6-My wife says she can see people's auras sometimes...and I believe her.

7-I wish I could be half as cool as Nick Cave.

8-I lost my virginity at age 11.

9-Everyone tells me I'm a great artist but it bores me.

10-When I'm in the reading mood I'll read about 15 novels a month. When I'm not I wont read anything for months.

I'd love to go, too. But I'm much less passionate about it than you. in fact, I could be talked out of it by my cats.

If you decide to resume your street-fighting career, let us know. I'm sure that I'm not the only DU'er who'd happily provide you with the relative address of a Republican neighbourhood and fund your new career. One might as well enjoy one's work... :7

156. We have two things in common - and no it's not the street fighting
or the virginity thing - I had to wait until 17 :-( .

Cheap Trick is one of the greatest bands ever! I've seen them at least a dozen times!

Also, #9 Ditto! I was even an art major in college but it bores me. I'd much rather be a musician but I have not talent in that area.

and even a couple of Zanders. If they play within 200 miles of me I go see them. Might even be more than a dozen

They are just so fun live!

(also, I'll admit I've had a crush on Zander since 10th grade - lol)

does Angel share with you her knowledge of people's auras?

too bad you're bored by your art, because you are very talented.

186. Doesn't pay much
Depends on the setup. It was usually a hastily organized thing outside of bars or clubs where you pick the vict...er,opponent and then people put up money on who will win.It wasn't like Brad Pitt in the movie Snatch or anything...just letting drunks lose their cash.

I've never seen a woman fight like that, but I've known a couple who could kick my ass if they had to.Hopefully I'll never give you a reason to test your ass-kicking theory on me :)

Angel doesn't really talk about auras often, but there's no way I'd think she'd lie to me about them so I believe her. She's mentioned that mean people usually have a blackish red aura and nice people have a bluish aura. She says the whiter the aura the better the person.

And thanks for the comment about my art. It's possible I'll get back into someday.I'd like to write a book and do illustrations for it,so that might be the way I get back into it.

My life is a little dull.

1. I'm dyslexic which makes me appear stupid on message boards.

2. I was a competitive swimmer from 5 through college. The type of team where you are up before dawn, work-out 4+ hours a day, and the rest of the world thinks your parents are borderline abusive. I loved it.

3. I was in a car accident and the head trauma caused me to be completely tone deaf.

4. I adore animals. I once had a goldfish put to sleep after he suffered a stroke.

5. My ancestors were arrested by George Washington at Trenton for drunk and disorderly conduct.

6. I'm an only child, as is my mom, and her mom. And, we all have "Ellen" in our names.

7. I'm never afraid to ask a question.

8. I was president of my sorority in college (which I never admit to anyone).

9. I have an astounding amount of Seinfeld quotes memorized.

10. I attended public, private, and parochial high schools.

Hmmmmmmmm....

10. I identify much more with my Portuguese ancestry than with my French.

9. At any given time I have six things going on in my head at once which translates to six competing projects going on at once. Right now I am editing courseware about Quality of Service, writing a series of vampire short stories (though the lore bores me terribly), a novel about superheroes (my second in a series), a novel about The Rape of Nanking, a daily journal for my son that I'll present to him, bound, on his 18th birthday, scouring DU for information about stuff, and pining for my new Mac.

8. Both of my brother is are chefs. One is regionally famous who has guest chefed at Harrods of London and just bought a restaurant for half a million bucks.

7. I am the oldest of three, and my first concrete memory is of the afternoon my youngest brother came home from the hospital as a newborn. I was three. My mother said "You'll have to help me keep them safe and take care of them because you are the oldest," so I always did.

6. I love Japanese pop music, and hate American pop music.

7. I started working 70 hour weeks in my family's restaurant on my 13th birthday.

6. I love cats but am highly allergic to them.

5. I knew I was going to marry my wife the first time I laid eyes on her in college. I had a vision of her in a wedding dress before I even knew her name.

4. I live in the UK for 18 months in college.

3. I have a high-heel fetish.

2. I was nominated but never won the NH small press association columnist of the year award and although I pretend to be aloof about the whole thing I think of it as my greatest failure and don't like to talk about it.

1. My greatest goal in life is to visit Tokyo, Japan, Pin Fang, China, and Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

Why would you consider your life a failure? By whose measuring stick? I submit that depending on your POV, your life could be a success. Think of other folks who have gone through what you have.

You can't change the past; learn from it and move onward. Focusing on what you haven't done won't get anything positive accomplished. Focus on what you WANT to do.

89. here goes ...
1. I'm not sure what an OED is.

2. When I was a teenager, I used to play Dungeons & Dragons in my room, alone.

3. I'm probably counted as a Republican because that's the last primary I voted in - even though I was just trying to screw around with them and force a runoff.

4. I'm an only child, my parents are divorced, and I'm terrified that my wife might leave me one day and then I'd be all alone.

5. I wish I could play the guitar. I also wish I knew karate.

6. I'm not a touchy-feely person, except for with my wife and children. If anyone else touches me, I cringe.

7. I love the Lord of the Rings books and movies. I think they contain valuable lessons for society.

8. I'm not turned on by the idea of two lesbians going at it. I find that I have much more luck with heterosexual women.

9. I think Confederate President Jefferson Davis made a foolish mistake in removing Gen. Joseph E. Johnston from command of the Army of Tennessee.

10. I feel a little uncomfortable posting some of this on a public message board.

91. ten things
1. My maternal great grandparents' marriage was arranged. He was small and slight, she was tall and Rubenesque. By all accounts they were blissfully happy and had 14 children.

2. I saw Santa and his reindeer outside my bedroom window when I was six years old. I'm as convinced now as I was then that I really saw him.

3. I had my son when I was 18 years old.

4. My maternal grandfather was a successful vaudeville and off Broadway dancer but gave it up to become a house painter and day laborer during the depression. :-(

5. I was an animal midwife as a child. My mother could never turn away a stray but they must have sensed her squeamishness because they always sought me out when they were in labor. The most memorable was when our dog Lady woke me in the middle of the night and gave birth to 13 puppies, all of whom lived.

6. When under stress I still have godawful nightmares about not attending my high school graduation.

92. ten things

7. I was once fluent in Latin.

8. In seventh grade I came in third in the Philadelphia Archdiocesan spelling bee.

9. In between husbands I had a brief but hot affair with a guy I used to babysit as a teenager. Luckily, we're still very good friends.

108. Here's my Ten
1. I color my hair.

2. I'm an identical twin. We even have identical first names (we have different middle names).

3. I've worked for some of the top minds in the fields of Decision Theory, Risk Analysis, and Negotiation (including Howard Raiffa).

4. I quit smoking 5 1/2 years ago.

5. My favorite color is yellow.

6. I used to be an avid Boston Bruins fan, but I have come to realize that their management is not interested in bringing a championship home to Boston. They have abused my fan loyalty long enough. I'll never buy another ticket.

7. My favorite sandwich is a Reuben.

8. My parents have been married for 53 years. They were married when my dad was 19 and my mom was 16 (after having "dated" for 4 years). My mom was 5 months pregnant on their wedding day. They are still in love. I'm insanely jealous. Imagine meeting your soul-mate when you're 12, and still having him/her in your life 57 years later...

9. I used to be a part-time town correspondent for the Worcester Telegram.

10. My local karaoke bar has named a drink after me. It's called the "MaryAppletini".

how long some people can stay happily in love.

My parents grew up together, married in their early 20's and stayed happily married for a great many years, until my mother's death 2 years ago.

It makes me wonder what skills, or dispositions, or innate knowledge they have that is so lacking in most marriages today.

1. I am a natural strawberry-blond
2. I am an old punk rocker (well, still in my 30s). I grew up in clubs from the time I was 14, and still have friends from those days.
3. I was captain of the debate team in high school (and still love a good sparring match)
4. I attended 3 colleges, majored in history and took 1st and 2nd year languages as electives for an easy 'A'
5. I was a National Merit Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society in high school
6. I spent a year traveling in Europe with financial aid money that was supposed to be used for classes
7. I've been unemployed twice in the last year, though I'm an overachieving sales professional. Unemployment makes me very lazy!
8. I HATE the sound of leaf blowers! There is one outside the window as I write!
9. I could never live anywhere where the bugs are bigger than my hand and have venom that could kill you.
10. I adopted two older boy cats (6 and 7 years old) in May, and it's the best thing I ever did!

115. Stop me if you've heard this one before
1. I was obsessed with diseases as a kid. Somebody in the next town died of bubonic plague and my mom was terrified that I'd find out and panic.

2. I've never broken any bones. I have broken four teeth, two of them badly enough to need extracting.

3. And then there was the time that I was sucking on a tank of nitrous oxide, fell out of my chair, and broke my nose.

4. I was a terrible student, and only made it through two years of college. My drug history had nothing to do with it; I'm just lazy.

5. I've always been a Democrat, but I've probably spent more time as a registered Republican, so I could vote against their anointed front runners in the primaries. My record, by the way, is dismal: my candidate wins no more than 25% of the time.

6. My luck is pretty bad in general. Therefore, I don't gamble or play cards for money.

7. The only paranormal experiences I have ever had have been hearing voices that aren't there.

8. I will eat nearly anything, but the one thing I really don't like is tarragon. The first time I met the woman who is now my mother-in-law, she cooked medallions of chicken in a tarragon sauce.

9. I've always lived in the Boston area (including my laughable college career in Providence), but I love to travel-- the further the better. I've been to Asia 5 times and South America 4 times.

10. I played the trumpet for about three months (fifth grade). Now I (only) play guitar, bass, mandolin, piano and marimba. Ask me about my musical career :-)

Jeepers, that was too much like work! I hope it's interesting...

116. In case anyone cares, here goes - sorry if it's boring...
10. I love looking for Seller's cabinets in antique malls (for those who are not into antiques, a Seller's cabinet is one of the brands of Hoosier Cabinets that were used in the early part of the century. They are the ones with the built in flour sifters and the pull out worktops). My grandfather worked at the G.I. Sellers factory for 32 years - that's the main reason. (Look up hoosier cabinets on Ebay - see what I mean.)

9. I used to have a crush on Kristy McNichol :loveya: when I was in my teens.

8. I have a weekness for teen romance movies (10 Things..., She's All That, Sixteen Candles, etc.) - I'm 41.

7. Wanted to be a professional comedian when I was younger - never made it past amateur smart-ass, though.

6. I love shopping - and I'm a guy.

5. I came THIS close (hold your index finger and thumb together) to switching my major in college to telecommunications, with the intent on being a DJ. I actually worked at a campus radio station for 4 years. Some of the best times of my life.

4. I would like to restore an old muscle car. But two kids and daycare expenses are a bit more important at this point. But someday...

3. My eyes tear up a little when I hear "Puff the Magic Dragon".

2. I have considered Rogaine to regain my slightly receding hairline.

1. I am deathly afraid of roller coasters, and also heights. If I were forced to ride a TALL ROLLER COASTER, I would probably soil myself. And have a stroke. In that order.

  3. My favorite color is cobalt blue, especially in glass.

  4. I bite my toenails. OK, I'm not that flexible. But I can crack just about every joint in my body.

  5. I believe there are innumerable inhabited worlds throughout the universe, and quite a few with technologically advanced civilisations. But we will never meet them, or hear from them because of the vastness of space between us.

  6. My favorite beers are Belgian.

  7. I have an exceptionally poor sense of direction. I probably make SOteric look like Christopher Columbus. I can't find my way out of a paper bag with both hands and a bloodhound. KCDem, however, has a freaky sense of direction. I'd be lost without her. Literally.

157. Okay, I'll give it a try, in no particular order
1) I got so drunk one time while living in Chicago, that I woke up day later in another State with a strange woman and just decided to stay here, quit my job, get divorced and go back to school.

2) I don't drink anymore...

3) I've always wanted to be a Locomotive Engineer, but never acted on those impulses, and instead just bounced around life and let laziness and fate and others determine the course of my career(s). I'm now a software designer/programmer.

4) I used to be an auto mechanic, a mailroom sorter, a musician, a literary magazine editor, a roofer, a retail upholstery clerk, an aluminum sider, and a pizza delivery guy.

5) I have an unfinished novel in a desk drawer, which I'm told is quite good, and was used as my Graduate Thesis (Magna Cum Laude), but I have no interest in finishing it at this time. I am (technically) a published poet, although I haven't written anything new in almost 10 years.

6) Gibsons Rule, Fenders Suck. (If you have to ask, don't.)

7) I was born with an undescended testicle and a herniated groin muscle and had surgery when I was 9 months old. A very small scar when a baby. But one that stretched over the next 42 years.

8) I suspect my family was Jewish at one time, while in Germany, and switched when they came over here. Have met a number of jewish people from Germany with my last name, and once while working for the Uiversioty, I got the other guys mail by mistake, all in Hebrew. Family Tree research has not proven or disproven this feeling. Also would not matter as I am not religious.

9) I struggle daily with Spirituality and the thoughts of a higher being, and I range all over the spectrum when it comes to belief vs. non-belief. When I am on the believing part of the spectrum, I feel somewhat better than when I am on the non-believing side. But it still doesn't help...

10) With a few exceptions, I don't think a single fucking thing designed and built after 1960 is worth a shit, and I live surrounded by objects of beauty, form and function, all built in the 1950's.

159. Fenders don't necessarily suck, but
I agree that they are fundamentally different instruments from Gibsons. (I'm a Gibson player myself, with a 1969 SG Custom.)

And I too can attest to the link between laziness in determination of career and computer programming.

Regarding the supreme being question, I actually feel worse when I think one may exist-- because of the implication that, for an allegedly omniscient and omnipotent being, He sure is doing a lousy job. (Or, if it really is just an experiment, why would He deserve our prayers?) This ties in to my conviction that the best available evidence for the Revealed Christian God is that a boatful of armed men, sailing under the cross, was able to bring down an empire ruling millions, not once but twice (Cortez vs. the Aztecs and Pisarro vs. the Incas).

I've had this fun rivalry going with friends over the years. I like to get their dander up about their guitar choice.

I tease that someday when they make enough money they can afford a real guitar as opposed to those toy strats and teles.

Truth be told, I've owned and loved both. Just like My Les Paul better.

A buddy of mine was born with the same condition, but his dad wanted to save money and tried cheaper treatments. Thus he didn't get his hernia surgery until he was 8 and is reasonably sure this is why he is now sterile. Ironically, the father is dying of diabetes and is trying to keep himself alive to see a grandchild that will now never come. There are worse things than hernia surgery at 9 months.

163. Fun Post
I've really enjoyed reading all this

so here goes in no particular order either

1. I went to nursing school shortly out of high school, worked as a Nurses Aide and really enjoyed the experience for the most part. I truly considered it a gift to witness life and death that way, and be able to assist. It was all the other crap that led me out of the profession

2. I drink strong black coffee ALL DAY LONG

3. I have never drank a pop in my life

4. I have Turners Syndrome, thats why I'm just shy of 5'0

5. due to #4 I have had MANY ear infections... I have one right now in fact. Once when I was about 8 I woke up from surgery, thought I was getting another tube put in my eardrum, and found I had gauze wrapped around my head. I thought they'd let me roll off the operating table, turns out they had decided to replace my scared ear drum with skin from behind my ear.

6. I dated a gay guy in high school, he was using me for cover, this was before I realized I was a lesbian myself.

thought that being an emergency dispatcher must be a fascinating career. I could never do it myself. I get too caught up in empathy for other people's lives.

But not such a good thing if you're a 911 dispatcher and you get caught up in it. Good for you, then. You sound ideal for the job. I hope you get a chance to explore that in your life.

for both EMS and the sheriffs dept. No money in it and it burns you out. Too many sad stories in the brain.
However I once gave CPR instructions to a man whos goat was in cardiac arrest. I don't think the goat made it but hey, we gave it a chance.

1) Played trumpet and French Horn in through high school.

2) Was an ambidextrous pre-schooler when learning to write. Chose left hand.

3) In college, was detained at US Customs for attempting to smuggle two six-packs of beer into California from Mexicali.

4) Almost turned that incident into an arrest by smirking at the Custom's agent's lousy spelling: "Penaty for failer to declare." Roommate burst out laughing when he saw me start to smile.

5) Guilty TV pleasure: Cops.

6) Read 2001: A Space Odyssey in one Sunday afternoon when I was 11 years old (1968)

7) Have seen 2001: A Space Odyssey - in a theater, not on video - more than 20 times.

8) Own seven dogs and two cats.

9) Was a conservative through high school and into college. Wrote an essay in junior high school DEFENDING Nixon and Watergate.
Got an A from a liberal teacher because it was at least well-organized and somewhat reasoned. (I think she also liked its contrariness)

10) Have been in one fist fight (6th grade). Not my idea. Got slaughtered.

10. I admire a well-crafted insult, inspite of it's inherent rudeness.

9. I make a cosmically good pecan pie.

8. I don't much care for Hemingway.

7. I like running. Sometimes I run in charity races.

6. I can't stand Earl Grey tea, it's like drinking cologne. (But I still think EarlG is tops)

5. I am a bit of a commitmentphobe.

4. I play evil practical jokes on my youngest brother Mike. --But he started it.

3. I have four bottles of cognac and a bottle of armagnac in my liquor cabinet.

2. When I lack the words to express myself otherwise, I resort to poetry.

1. I cut the end of my left thumb off while traunching fish.

187. Factoids 11-20 from me...
11. Have a big jar of goldfish crackers at my desk for everyone at work to enjoy - it is an easy way for me to be a "social magnet".

12. I eat left handed, but do everything else right handed. If I were to punt in the NFL, that would be left footed, though.

13. Didn't really like broccoli until I was in college. Now I eat it at least once a week...

14. Haven't been inebriated in about 15 years or so. My wife has never seen me drunk.

15. I do enjoy a scotch and water every now and then. But just one.

16. Was a borderline geek in jr. high school and high school.

17. Have a relatively high IQ. Not bragging, just the truth. (Saw my permanent records in high school once).

18. Took an aerobics class in college once because the girl/guy ratio was 7:1. Got a girlfriend from that class, too!

19. I was told 3 times in one night at a party by people who didn't know each other "Hey - you remind me of Bill Murray."

20. I think CSI is the best TV show in years, and that reality TV is just one step closer to "The Running Man" coming true in our society. I don't watch ANY reality TV.

9. My birthday is the same day as my sister's, who is five years older than me.

That you're left-handed.

That you've a degree in mathematics.

That your hair is longer than mine. And prettier, too, dammit.

That your idiot brother once set the both of you on fire in a strange, duct-tape related incident.

That your cat's name is actually Elvira, after Elvira Mistress of the Dark.

That if most folks here took the time to know you, they'd think you were the cleverest, most knee-slappingly funny fellow ever to wander or be dragged bodily into DU.

That you drive a convertible.

That you get medeival about people who call those 'herbal concoctions' tea.

That a good many of your friends described themselves with a label that makes them sound like worshipers of Satan.

and finally, ... that I am your deeply devoted love-slave.

195. 10 things
The thing about depersonalized screennames is that you may have read me saying innumerable things about myself at one time or another but with no name or meaningful sobriquet to attach them to, you'll most likely forget or confuse me with some other un- DUer like unidentifiedbassplayer. Thus, if it's a subject I've already worn out but figure most DUers still don't know about me, I'll start with "I'm the one that..." to differentiate from anybody you might be confusing me with.
1) I can make those disgusting farting noises by squeezing my hands together.
2) I can stick my entire fist in my mouth.
3) I'm the one who shares both first and last name with another DUer, Stuckinthebush
4) I spent the 1990s reading everything I could get my hands on about archaeology.
5) I'm the one totally obsessed with Steve Wynn, John Wesley Harding and Too Much Joy.
6) Used to be an expert on Soviet-era Russian history. Also majored in International Relations during the Cold War. Boy did I bet on the wrong horse!
7) Was the worst trombone player in the history of the world. As I haven't played in 23 years, presumably I'd be even worse now.
8) Of my 8 great-grandparents, 6 were Protestant, including a Methodist minister, one was Jewish and one was Catholic. So naturally I was raised Catholic. (In the South, if you're Catholic it means one of two things: 1) you're Italian; or 2) somebody two or three generations back married an Irish woman.)
9) My father's father was also a Methodist minister but got defrocked for expressing doubt from the pulpit regarding Jesus' divinity.
10) I inherited my grandfather's piety and his tact.

196. It's my turn.
This is a really fun post. I hope you guys give enough of a crap about me to actually read and respond to this.

10. I have a weakness for restaurants and good food. I spend way too much on going out even though I'm a poor college student.

9. George Carlin and Lewis Black are my favorite comedians.

8. I hate my boobs. They are DDs and they get in the way.

7. I have a weakness for Psycho thriller movies and books.

6. My favorite color is Yellow. My favorite flower is the daisy. O8) Because both are so happy and friendly.

5. I'm in love with a boy named Skip.

4. I have hypothyroidism. (My thyroid doesn't work well, and it slows my metabolism down to nothing.)

3. People who do not use proper grammar bug the crap out of me. :grr:

2. I haven't had a parent for 7 years. He died and left me with an alcoholic mother who hates me. She literally spends more time with my dead father and sister than she has with me my entire life. I recently became a part of a real family and for the first time I found out what it is to be loved unconditionally and without judgement. I'm 24, and I have literally never felt so loved and protected in my life. They say after a while you don't need a mother anymore...they were lying. I forgot how much I needed one.

1. I have a flip flop fetish. :bounce: My favorite pair right now are Floaties from Sugar Shoes. I refuse to wear real shoes unless it's under 59 degrees outside...Oh and I heard that Jennifer Aniston has a $200! pair of flip flops, and now I must have some. LOL Yes, I'm a closet freak!

3. I have Asperger syndrome, and I had many cool "special interests" in different countries around the world as a kid.

4. I love the mixture/marbling of green, purple and deep blue.

5. I really don't mind cleaning the toilet.

6. I grew up with my mom, who's African-American, and her partner, who was born in Costa Rica.

9. The yummiest alcoholic beverage I've had yet is peach Zinfandel.

10. My eye color has gone from blue-gray to hazel to brown over the years.

3. I just got a black kitten named Drizzt (pronounced "drist"), named after the sexiest do-gooder in the Forgotten Realms.
4. I'm a huge anime fan, love Asian Pop/Rock and enjoy cosplaying at various anime & sci-fi cons
5. I read and write slash fiction
6. I met my sweetie of six years online (on a MUD)
7. I worked for two years at an occult shop, and am a 2nd Degree Wiccan High Priestess
8. I have played D&D off and on for most of my life
9. I was voted Miss Callisto 1999 by a bunch of lesbians :) (ok, I was the only one dressed as Callisto, but it still counts!)

211. I'll have a go...
10. I have ADHD, which is very uncommon for girls. Most females have the inattentive form, not the hyperactive form. I act like an 8 yr old on crack 90% of the time.

9. Tragically, I am possessed of an amazing imagination, and no creative outlet whatsoever for it.

8. I have an imaginary dog. I pet him sometimes. His name is Gomez and he is a pug.

7. I LOVE techno. I use it as relaxation music like some people use New Age. I throw on the headphones, put on a bangin' Jeff Mills set and just let my mind wander.

6. The television in my house, when it is on, stays on Nickelodeon. Not only for the kids, I'd MUCH rather watch cartoons than Judge Judy or Survivor any other of the plethora of shite out there.

5. My very favourite teacher ever held me down and tickled me while reciting the 8s of the multiplication tables until I memorized them. He would be put in jail for that today. I have utterly no doubt of the innocence of his actions. He rocked.

4. My appendix is on my left side. Yours might be too, it's actually not terribly uncommon.

3. I took ballet for 14 years, until my teachers decided I was a) too short and b) too top-heavy to ever be a professional dancer. Oh, and I blew out my knee.

2. If I could have anything in the world, I would want a collection of genetically engineered miniature safari animals. :D

1. I have an excess of self-esteem. Not conceit, I just think I'm an over-all pretty good person. It breaks my heart to see good people who let the world convince them they're worthless. And so I decided that the world is already going to try to kick my ass, I ain't bendin' over to make it easier. ;)

1. I have a large collection of bottles of this energy drink called "Rain"...one of the "Elements" drinks. Last time I checked, I had an amount somewhere in the 60s..

2. I have a birthmark on the left side of my forehead (thank god it's usually covered by my long hair)

3. I was originally a Libertarian (for about a month...)

4. I'm straight, yet I have a crush on Chris Cornell, lead singer of Audioslave and former lead singer of Soundgarden...

5. My all-time biggest hero, Tom Morello, is the guitarist of Audioslave. Also, formerly of Rage Against the Machine, greatest band on the planet

6. The most expensive things I own is a tie between my Playstaion 2 (alone) is the sound system for my computer (sound card, cords, speakers, woofer, etc.)

7. <--- My lucky number

8. The only candidates I haven't came out and supported as my one candidate yet are Braun, Edwards, Lieberman (and Clark, if you consider him a candidate...) In other words

9. Two of my life goals revolve around the game "Dance Dance Revolution"...1) to play it at least once in an arcade in Japan and 2) Get a "AAA" grade on the song "Max 300" (I WILL do it...)

10. I love staring at myself in the mirror, for some strange reason...

216. Here goes...

1.I'm 29 and married to a 55 year old. My Mother and sister both thought I was nuts. They wanted me to for marry money, not love, especially if he's older. Needless to say, they r outta my life.

2.I've had dreams of people I've never met and places I've never been that have come true. No, it wasn't deja'vu. I told my Husband about a couple of them, then as they happened I poked him and said, this was my dream I told u about. Now he believes me. If only I could tell which ones were going to come about.

3.I left home when I was 14 and was homeless and drug addicted, almost killed myself.

4. Now all my highs are from herbs. I've taught myself a lot about herbal remedies. I'm not too fond of western medicine for most conditions. JMO

5. I never finished high-school. This makes me a little hesitant to post on here, because I'm not very good at expressing myself like most on here are. I'm working on my GED, just need to brush up on some math and essay writing (I hate writing essays). After that I'm not sure what I want to do.

6.I had my son when I was 18 (to my husband) totally natural at home w/a mid-wife. He was 9.5lbs.

7.I swear I have the sex drive of a male. It seems to be increasing as I get older.

8.My Grandmother was John Glenn's cousin. I remember her talking about it every time he was on TV or mentioned. Her maiden name was Glenn.

9. My other obsession, besides politics and current events, is workingout & nutrition. I write down everything that goes into my mouth and very rarely do I eat anything that's pre-packaged or processed. No pork either.

10.My Dads name is Don Cornelius, like that dude from Soul Train. LOL I couldn't think of anything else.

This has been an awesome thread and has showed me the 'warm' side of DU. A Great bunch, but of course, ur democrats!
