2. here you go....
Open a command prompt

Type:

cd \windows\system32

rename msblast.exe msblast.biteme

regedit

*** the registry editor will pop up ***

Seek and destroy the following registry key

3. The best way....
is to replace XP with Linux, however, I understand that this might not be what you are looking for so...

the second best way is to apply the patches that prevent the virus from returning first. You should be able to do this by running Windwos Updates program. Click on START and All Programs and it should be listed in the menu. After that, if you don't have Anti-Virus software installed, obtain and install Anti-Virus software. If you already have AV Software installed, make sure that you update the virus protection lists.

Here's some more information...

4. Well! I have XP and dial up... Luckily, I still have my

old Win 98 computer. I downloaded the patch and virus fix to disk and took care of it that way. I couldn't download the files on my XP computer because Windows kept shutting down! I'm sure that's the problem you're encountering. If you know someone on win 98 you could get them to download the files for you. They're small files that don't take much time to download. Good luck!

5. I had the same dial-up problem
I downloaded the patch at work & copied it to a floppy. Anyone with a high-speed connection regardless of the OS should already have the patch installed and can download a copy for you.

6. Oops! Right. As long as they no longer have the worm...
any OS can download the fixes. Color me embarrassed. :7 Hye! It's still early in the morning for me. I still have another computer with XP that I need to remember to "fix" before I set it back up. Had to send it back to HP to fix the TV tuner. I've had it back for a month, still unopened. I just know I'll forget to install the blaster fix before I start using the internet.

7. You made need this info.
What to do if you get the reboot message when you're downloading the patch.

* Click the Start then select Run and enter cmd then press or
* Then from the command prompt enter shutdown -a then press this should stop the current shutdown sequence. NOTE | This will stop the current shutdown sequence but will NOT stop it from occuring again until you have applied the Microsoft patch. If the shutdown sequence starts again while you are downloading just repeat shutdown -a command from the command prompt.

8. Try this
Bring up the tasklist (cntrl-alt-delete) and select the processes tab. Locate the msblaster app running in the list. End process on it. Attempt to DL the fix.

If that fails try this little trick. The virus is coded to run until Dec 31 2003. Roll the date of your system ahead to Jan 1 2004 and see if it deactivates itself and then try to DL the fix.

Failing that get a friend with a clean system and a CD burner to burn you a copy of the file (or better yet a USB flash memory card of it).
