Tom and Jerry cartoons

I keep thinking of the toon where Tom is being made to play baby by an evil little girl. His cat friends see him and start to make fun of him. Then they grab his whiskers and use his head as a slap bass. Funniest thing I have ever seen. In the end both Tom and Jerry end up swallowing castor Oil.

God, how I wanted to kill that demonic child.

Even though it was stereotypical- I hate they changed the maid's voice- the new voice just doesn't work.

2. When MGM reissued all the cartoons for television -

they had their animation staff paint over all the images of "Mammy Two-Shoes" (yes, that was the character's name) to have white skin. Fortunately, they showed only her arms and ankles for the most part. Then they had the great June Foray (voice of Rocky The Flying Squirrel, among many others) re-record her dialogue with an Irish brogue. I understand their reasoning, but it seems a shame to mess with the classics like this.

6. yeah I hated that they did that

I mean every time a cartoon blew himself up and had a black face they cut that out. I am not black so I can't judge them but is there any black person on the boards that found that offensive?

I'm just curious cause just like anyone not speaking Spanish could hear the most horrible profanity in Spanish and not be offended I just want to make sure I'm not being insensitive....

when I was a kid- I didn't know any better and thought it funny. When I got older and understood- it wasn't funny anymore.

When people edit cartoons made in the 30's and 40's to fit 2003 standards.

Yeah there is a lot of racial stereotyping in some cartoons, but you can't apply one era's standards to another. I don't think anyone's going to think black people are all servants because of Mammy Two-Shoes from T&J.

Besides, live action movies from the same time survived uncut with far worse sterotyping. Charlie Chan anyone?

3. Actually there was a story behind that

"NOTE ABOUT MAMMY IN THE TOM & JERRY CARTOONS (Thanks to Randy Watts): Regarding the black/white versions of Mammy Two-Shoes in the Tom and Jerry cartoons. The "White Mammy Two-Shoes" versions were created back in the 1960s for CBS when they were airing these cartoons. The work was done by Chuck Jones's crew when Jones was making new Tom and Jerry theatricals. I recall reading Chuck's remarks that at the time M-G-M still had most of its old animation artwork on file, so it was pretty much just a matter of retracing and repainting the original pencil animation and photographing it against recreated backgrounds. This new "White Mammy" material was then cut into dupe negatives of the cartoons in question to replace the original "Black Mammy" footage. Voice actress June Foray was brought in to redub the soundtracks. (Incidentally, that voice is supposed to be Irish.) Instances where the "White Mammy" has a "Black Mammy" voice (or vice versa) is a result of carelessness. Picture and sound elements on film masters are stored separately. What happens is simply that someone isn't paying attention and matches a newer "White Mammy" picture element to the original "Black Mammy" sound element (or vice versa)."

7. A Burning Question

Why were Hanna and Barbera able to do such good work when they worked for MGM, and such crappy work when they worked for themselves?

9. One word = budget.

MGM put as much money into their cartoons as they did into everything else they did. Funny, then, that Warner Bros. had them beat.

When H & B started doing TV animation, they offered MGM a chance to bankroll it. MGM declined, saying, "After all these years here, how come you now decide you can make these so cheaply?"

By the time H & B got some really big dough behind them (the Flintstones, the Jetsons, Scooby-Doo and beyond), they just didn't care anymore.
