Raining Money on the Autobahn
Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 01:37 PM by Kellanved
It began raining cash on the German autobahn Wednesday, leading to a major traffic jam and road closure, police said.

A 42-year-old motorist left a briefcase full of tens of thousands of dollars in cash on the roof of his car and drove off onto the highway in the western city of Bochum, sending the bills flying.

Because drivers stopped their vehicles in the middle of the road to collect the money, the autobahn was blocked for about 10 minutes.

Of the original sum, police were only able to recover about 3,200 dollars.

Edit:
This story has a tragic sidenote: the money was for the wages of a 35-man plant. The company is very likely to go bancrupt because of this manager's money-vanishing trick.

5. Believe it or not: Finder hands in 'eureka' cash
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 11:46 AM by Kellanved
BOCHUM - A more-honest-than-the-rest motorist has handed over EUR 29,500 he picked up on the road in Germany this week after a briefcase stuffed with EU|R 100,000 fell from a car.

Police said Thursday they were considering charging the man, 54, with withholding other people's property. They said he should have handed in the cash on Monday night, straight after picking it up.

Torsten Duddeck, 42, the luckless owner of the briefcase, has appealing for all money back: it was one month's pay for 35 staff of an insolvent business. Since the money cannot be replaced, the tottering business faces closure with the loss of all jobs.

Motorists thought "eureka" when the money fluttered over Autobahn 43 near the western city of Bochum on Monday night. Police closed the highway to shoo away people snatching at swirling notes. Patrolmen could find only EUR 3,000 left on the tarmac.
