9. DMB "Crash Into Me", U2 "Sweetest Thing", "Tonight, Tonight" Smashing Pump

Stefan sitting atop the bass, in a suit, in the middle of a pond plucking those bass strings.... pure art. Wish I had a still from it. And the violin guy (whose name escapes right now!), in the "skirt" of violins, playing the violin...

U2's Sweetest Thing-- because that's Bono's wife, very cute. After all those years and all those videos, finally putting Ali there, liked it. (And I'll spare y'all, you know I'm up for 90% of U2 videos).

Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight"....very....turn of the century? What's the time period? Loved it (and the song).

Also, "Everybody Hurts" by REM and "Take on Me", good pick. Honestly, that song rocked.

14. Oh wow I love "Tonight, Tonight"!

Can't believe I forgot about it! That's what I get for thinking up lists off the top of my head. I'm a huge Pumpkins fan and love all their videos ("TT" and "Ava Adore" are probably my favorites by them. Oh, and "Zero" because I'm such a big period whore).

Some fun facts about "Tonight, Tonight": the video is actually an homage to an early silent film masterpiece by one of the early film pioneers, George Méliès (his name actually appears on the boat at the end of the video, when the hapless couple makes it back to the surface). The film is 1902's "A Trip to the Moon". Here is a page with some interesting info about Méliès: http://www.nwlink.com/~erick/silentera/Melies/melies.html

The video makers tried to copy his style as much as possible, filming it on an ancient hand camera, using all set pieces (the octopus for instance) very little or no computers, etc. If you can get your hands on it, the Greatest Hits Video Compilation has a *fantastic* "making of" piece on "TT" and many other Pumpkins videos. It's a must have if you're a Pumpkins fan, and has been out on DVD for quite some time.

I didn't know it was based on a particular film...that sounds like a a hefty bit of work for the makers of the video, but boy is it beautiful.

33. Oh lord you had to bring up "Closer"

I'll confess for a moment that I'm a shallow bitch. The sight of Trent Reznor wearing a ball gag in the video for "Closer" put me through puberty. It awakened parts of me I didn't know existed. That was lust at first sight. It was also when I first realized I was a bit...kinky. :evilgrin:

I'm totally at a loss though, because now that I think of it I've *never* seen the video for "Hurt". And I'm a bit more than a casual NIN fan. Weird, huh?

45. The Video For Hurt

was recorded during live shows in Omaha and Dallas in 1995. It is basically Trent lit from behind while behind a huge projection screen. The projection screen displays various disturbing images of decay. The end of the video shows the reverse decomposition of a fox and some fruit. I can't believe that you have never seen it. MTV really overplayed it when it was in rotation.

51. The Lounge-A-Palooza Version

Steve (Lawrence) and Edie (Gorme) did a lounge version of Black Hole Sun that is far different than Soundgarden's, but it is still a haunting, dark song. It's also excellent all on its own, which is a testament to the power of the piece.

Neil Young and the Blue Notes.
Nice little side venture for Neil, brassy blues band backing. The video was pretty decent, though rarely seen as MTV banned it since the song was critique of the commercialization of music and the music industry at large. Oddly, the video won MTV's video of the Year, despite them not playing it...

although 3 videos I saw very late at night in 1990 (Carolyn by Steve Wynn, That's A Lie by Too Much Joy, and It's Too Late by Bob Mould) led to me buying upwards of 50 cds between them and so should earn honorable mention.

Everything else by Weird Al earns 2d place, except for that goddam thing about Pentiums.
