Just finished "Main Street" by Sinclair Lewis. Tomorrow? "The Iron Heel"!

You know, the Oligarchic dystopia by Jack London where he pretty much predicts Mussillini & Hitler plus lays out what we're all screaming headlong into today, blind Corporatism. A literal blueprint for what we're seeing everyday...But written in 1906!

Wicked.

I'm really digging the early 20th century writers as of late. Lots of Leftist Populism and anti-Corporatism in the stories suits me well.

I many was yes, in many others no. While she was essentially a Socialist she also had a maid...So was the "defeat" too brutal? Nah. She wasn't about to give up her niceties as the wife of a small town Doctor. I guessed it before I read it.

She became a Fabian Incrementalist. For a while that worked.

1. a heartbreaking work of a staggering genious-david eggers. sad funny, funny, sad, good dialect, the only nonfiction book i"ve read in ages, but its partial true
2. absolutely american- by david lipsky. well written.
3. seabiscuit-laura hillenbrand. better than the movie.
4 driving Mr albert-michael paterniti, funny early. meets william s burroughs

2. Read the Iron Heel in High School in the 60's.

It's a timeless read. It's alot like reading about medical problems and all of a sudden you think you have the symptoms you just read about. Think about Microsoft when he describes the purpose of lawyers in the unfettered capitaist future he describes.

3. Cool. Do you know how difficult that book was to find?

Off-line that is. Tried 5 or 6 bookstores until yesterday when I went back to my local Barnes & Noble and they had a brand spankin' new copy.

One of the little Lefty booksellers must have had a premonition.

Beside having similar names (as well as Socialist leanings) Upton Sinclair and Sinclair Lewis actually knew each other.
