what's a program I can use to rip vinyl to MP3?

let me know. I've been wanting to rip my albums for years now.

I can pump my stereo through the line in on my sound card, and then record to .wav and then convert to MP3 and then name it ... but I would have to do that manually for EACH song.

At 500+ albums and 8-16 songs per that's alot more time and effort than I've been willing to put into it.

3. I'm doing min all this week:

I'm using realtek to record the sound into a WAV format. My copy of XP Pro came with "Realtek AV Rack", but I think you can record with Windows Media Player or any other audio manager.

I'm taking the WAV files and running them through "DePopper v.2" (some kind DUer directed me to this shareware program--does a great job of removing pops and vinyl noise, but only does WAV files, not MP3s or OGGs).

Once they've been "depopped", I edit each track using "Audacity" (great freeware program), and also use Audacity to save them as MP3.

I've done about 70 of my rarest vinyls so far, and they sound great!

They are usually used to either create MP3s from CD tracks or wave files and vice-versa. I expect the function you are looking for is close to creating MP3s from wave files.

9. I have a Creative Audigy sound card that

came with "Creatice Recorder." I hook up my turntalble to a mini-amp and hook the mini-amp to the sound card via the aux in plugs and make a .wav file or MP3 file or whatever and then burn onto a CD.

There is software from Pinnacle that will do the job. You can purchase the software ($50) or the software and a USB pre-amp ($100). Go to http://www.pinnaclesys.com and go to home video area of site. The nice thing about this software is it will also reduce or eliminate cracks and pops if the vinyl record has scratches, etc.

Another place to look for freeware or shareware would be pcworld.com or zdnet.com.

10. Audigy doesn't have a built-in pre-amp? It should...

I've been thinking about getting one, primarily for the advantages of eliminating one piece of gear (the pre-amp) from my recording system.

11. No it does not.

If a pre-amp is not used you can barely hear the file when you play it back. I purchased an RCA mini-amp at Radio shack for $50. It works like a charm with the card. I ripped some of my father-in-laws records onto CDs and the ones I did were as good or better than the ones he had done professionally and a hell of a lot cheaper! I do have the Audigy Platinum 5.1 card but you can probably get by with a less expensive Audigy card. The hardware and software are exceptional.

12. Save them as lossless audio discs as well!

Even better, compress them into SHN format. It's a shame to go through all the trouble of cleaning up out-of-print vinyl only to compress it with a lossy codec.
