May I borrow an anteater, please???

Not only is my house an Amazonian 90+ degrees, we have been invaded by about a million ants.. I am seriously considering, just packing some favorite stuff and running away..

The part for the A/C finally arrived today, and hopefully the A/C guy can "work us in tomorrow".. But there is still the issue of the ...A N T S...


These damned cats refuse to eat them, and I am afraid to use poisonous substances , what with so many "paw lickers" in the house..


The really awful thing is, that a week ago we were commenting how we had NOT been invaded by ants.. I think they heard us, and decided to make liars out of us.. :grr:

1. Cats don't eat ants,

What i heard you had to do , was put the cat food on an island with water around it...what the heck!! do the ant traps but keep them away from the kitties, my prob these days are mice, which my kittens seem t take care of..(gross, I find eviscerated mouse carcasses right before breakfast)

2. A lot of people in Southern California. . .

have been invaded with ants this summer. I don't understand it. Some say it's the heat driving them in but it hasn't been that hot. We've had them in great number in our yard for years but have never been invaded. Now, everyday we have a new infestation. Strange summer. . .

3. Okay, this is going to sound absolutely wacko....

I'm presuming you don't mean big ants that make hills outside, but little ones (what we call "sugar ants" down here).

Get yourself a package of cheap hot dogs, slit it open and leave it wherever they're congregating. Leave it for about a half-hour. Then scoop it and them up and drown `em.

Don't know why it works, but I found it out by accident a while back. Left an open package next to the microwave while I ate one hot dog, with the intention of going back in a few minutes for another. Didn't even think there were that many ants in the house (had only seen a few previously). Came back to find about a thousand in the package.

5. that won't work for most ants

you have to destroy the queen or they will just reproduce and return.

There are a lot of natural, non-poisonous ways to get the queen. Contact your county's Home Extension office for ideas.

4. sorry I have rented my last one out...for you it would have been free

Ant traps work wll for me. I just shove them under the stove and the refridgerator and under the sink. The cats can't get them and the ants are gone in a few days. In the meantime wash all countertops with a solution of water and bleach.

6. I did this and didn't have ant problems afterward

A coworker told me about this:

Mix honey and yeast together, pour the mixture in large jar lids and leave them in various places on the kitchen counters. In no time, they will be covered in ants. You can destroy the ants because by the time the lids are covered, some ants have already taken the yeast back to HQ where it will kill all the remaining ants.

This is pretty disgusting but it seemed to work for me *knock on wood*.

edit: use live yeast, not brewer's. that would only make them stronger.
