2. in between
Basically car camping - tents and no generator, but we're not killing our own food. :D

4. Oh ok...that qualifies as camping.
Parking your trailer at an RV hookup does not. :-)

It's starting to get a little cooler here, so I'm expecting it to be nice up around Rabun.

11. Well, I don't get much point of view from that map, but I trust you!
:-)

It's going to be rather cool here at night this week, too. 60s, even - break out the jackets. :eyes:

17. I don't think it's too far
iirc, Franklin isn't too far past the border. The mother of a friend of ours has a mountain cabin up around that area. Gorgeous country.

:) I'll bring pictures back. Of course, we're going too early for fall leaves which are supposed to be great this year with all the rain we've had, but it should still be nice.

Not far from TN, though.

I don't know that we're going to be doing a *lot* of hiking, but probably some - a little swimming and Mars-viewing, too. :)

22. there goes my bragging rights
of being an excellent map reader.

camping in CO. is my fave experience so far.

washing my hair in the stream was a bit tough. small blocks of ice freezing my head wasn't fun but it's a story to tell.

tubing is scary. have you ever been tubing? i'd much rather be in a canoe, anything than a tube.

well at least the bathroom won't be a problem.
someday i'm going to stay at campground and enjoy a little bit of luxury.

I did a lot of that with my family and the scouts in southern CO and northern NM when I was younger. Some day I'll plop myself back down in the Sangre de Cristos. Some day...

There are bugs and animals out in those woods...and there's no TOILET and there's no SHOWER!!! And haven't you ever seen the Blair Witch Project? Haven't you ever seen DELIVERANCE? :scared: People go into the woods and NEVER COME OUT!!! LOL

15. I LOVE CAMPING!!!!
Where are you going?
How many are going?
Do you camp in a tent, camper, RV, popup?
Do you go to campgrounds or do you rough-it in the woods?
Are you close enough to civilization to go grocery shopping... or do you have to bring it ALL with you?
Boating, swimming, canoeing, hiking, hunting?

What do you like best?
What's your least favorite part about camping?
Ever set up camp (or break camp) in the pouring rain?

Where are you going?

Near Rabun Gap, in the north Georgia mountains.

How many are going?

Four.

Do you camp in a tent, camper, RV, popup?

Tent.

Do you go to campgrounds or do you rough-it in the woods?

Campground this time - Ms Uly isn't up to roughing it quite yet.

Are you close enough to civilization to go grocery shopping... or do you have to bring it ALL with you?

We're bringing everything.

Boating, swimming, canoeing, hiking, hunting?

What do you like best?

I like all of them (although I haven't hunted in years) but it's just swimming and hiking this time.

What's your least favorite part about camping?

Finding the bathroom (or, in emergencies, a handy tree) at 3 am.

Ever set up camp (or break camp) in the pouring rain?

More times than I can count. When I first joined the Boy Scouts, we had these enormous canvas wall tents that we took camping every month, and it nearly always rained on us. Those things are a pain in the ass dry - wet they're impossible. :)

26. nooo...Mr. K don't camp
:D Scarlett either, for that matter. We used to take Sonya camping and she did fine walking around and what have you, but short-legged dachsund mixes don't tend to do well on the trails.

I was wrong about where we were going. We went to Lake Rabun which is further into the northeast corner of the state on the Tallulah River. Pretty site, and we had the campground almost to ourselves.

A few pics from our walk up to a couple of falls on Saturday...

The lower falls - I forget the name. Very, very cold water. About the same temp as the shower I took Saturday evening. :grr:

A wall of rhododendrons. Damn things are huge. It's very rainforesty in this part of GA.

A funky fungi.

Angel Falls, with our friends for perspective. Ok, so the Tallulah River isn't the Nile, but hey...:)

We did have a wonderful time. It'd been a little while, though, so I forgot how much sleeping on the ground (even with pads) makes my back ache...(insert old fart noises here)

30. Don't I know!
I went camping in Missouri in August. Try riding your bike 60 or 70 miles and then sleeping on the ground. I think I'm going to turn into a pampered wuss and pick up one of those air mattresses.

32. "pampered wuss" - no
I quickly realized Friday night that there was *one* position in which I could sleep comfortably given where we'd put up the tent, and that was with the point of my bony hips in the sole soft spot between a root and two rocks. There is the difference between "able" and "pampered".
