What should we name the baby?
Due April 2, sex as yet unknown. I hate trendy names and weird spellings, so no Madisynnes or Jaedyns. Any and all non-trendy/weird suggestions are welcome.

56. Allen?
My Lebanese great-grandfather was named Ally, which it only recently occured to me must have been Ali, pre-Ellis Island. But I can't name a white kid from Minnesota Ali. Allen would be better. But I'm not getting the "that's the name" vibe from Allen. Sorry.

Scandinavian but not weird last name, two syllables, starts with M. So first names that end in an "m" sound are out.

151. I agree! He must be joking!
Years ago, I had a summer job as Cinderella at an amusement park. I took kids for rides in my Pumpkin Coach. (I kid you not; I felt so sorry for the horses. These days, I probably would have called in the ASPCA!) Just before public school let out the little kids would make class trips to said park. The little ones were so cute. They would arrive in little groups, complete with name badges. I will never forget one little kindergartner with thick glasses. Her name tag said Beulah!!! I felt so very sorry for her! What were her parents thinking?!:eyes:

27. Stay with me on this one...
If it's a boy - Elvis! (Be honest - there aren't that many. Costello, Grbac, and Presley are the only ones I can think of...)

If it's a girl - name her Virginity. That way, when she is 18, and a happy well adjusted child, you can honestly say that "you never lost your Virginity." Ha!

Ba-da-bing! But seriously, folks...

Stay away from geeky trendy. One of the more trendy names at this point for girls is McKenzie or a spelling similar. Too many kids at this point with that name. It's like the Tiffany/Amber fad in the 80's.

My apologies to any DU'ers with those names - but you gotta admit it was a trendy name...

I would suggest something from the family history...

My grandmother lives in northern Minnesota. She came over from Germany when she was a child, and her maiden name was a kind of strange German word with two syllables starting with M.

That's what I'm going to name my daugher if I ever get a job so I can earn money so I can get a date so I can get married so I can have kids.

If it's a boy then I like Brandon, just because I have had a couple of good friends named that over the years.

74. Cynthia (in case you missed it buried above)

93. Scandinavian names are perfectly acceptable in Minnesota
Last winter I started a thread on "You know you're really a Minnesotan when..." and one of the items was, "You have American-born friends named Bjorn, Einar, Arne, Helga, Liv, Reidun..."

Actually, my favorite Scandinavian girl's name is "Mari" (MAH-ree).

135. Non-trendy names: Michael (#1 boy's name), David, John,

(Yes, there's a Biblical theme here!) James, Stephen, Paul, Mark, Joseph, Thomas, Daniel, Mary, Anne, Elizabeth, Martha, Sarah (Sally), Rebecca (Becky), Ruth, Susannah (Susan, Suzanne.) These names crop up in every generation.

Obadiah, Jezebel, Nicodemus, and Judas are cool names, but best used to name cats, who have their own secret names anyway (see T. S. Eliot for details.)

Whatever you name the baby, chances are that s/he will at some point feel the name is too popular or not popular enough, and want to be called Gandalf or Britney instead. And names become trendy after people start to like them sooooo your carefully chosen untrendy name could become trendy. It happened to me. . . Just do your best and take your chances!

We have picked out our kids names even though we aren't pregnant...Even though my mom asks me every day to make sure. She's a bitch...anyway
Xoe Elizabeth (Pronounced Zoe, but Skip likes to be different.)
Hudson Jack (We think it sounds like an explorer.)

But here are some other good names.
Quinn (for either a boy or a girl)
Bailey or Baylea (Obviously the first spellig is for a boy)
Gray or Browne (I love these names for a boy.)
Grayson (for either)
Gabrielle or Gaby for short
Melissa (My name. You can never go wrong with a classic. :7 )
Jill
Joy
Piper (I love this name, and no not because of a witch on charmed)
Katie
Finn (I don't know why, but I'd always loved this name for a boy)
Xander
Lillie (It was my great grandmother's name.)
Bronwyne (Different. A friend I chat with made this up I think)
Gibson (For a boy. A chick from Trading Spaces named her kid this.)
Turner
Micah or Mica
Xavier
Alex or Alexis

Ok, the list is long enough...I might think of some more later...But please don't name your kid something really popular. When I was a kid Melissa was really popular. Now no one names their kids that for some reason.

144. Under consideration
My favorite uncle was named David. But DH thinks it's too "blah," so it's second on the middle name list, after Robert (FIL's name). I have a cousin Daniel, and Michael has never done anything for me.

I love, love, love Elizabeth nn Betsy. But I'm afraid the world might already have enough Elizabeths. Haven't made up my mind on that yet. I like Claire a lot too.

Thanks for the suggestions, they were good.

153. You are very welcome!
Robert is a good one, also, as it also has many nicknames; just in case he doesn't like his first name, wants to use it as an initial and either Robert or Bob or Bobby or Rob or Robby or EVEN Bert as his 'name to be called' as in __. Robert YourLastName(s).

I am so glad Elizabeth is a hit. IMO, the world will NEVER have enough Elizabeths because those of US named Elizabeth just will never accept that - LOL!

BTW, congratulations on your impending addition and all good wishes to you in the future, !

154. Elizabeth is a name that's always used but never really trendy

for at least the last hundred years, I'd say, though there are a lot of Bettys in their sixties and older and they may be named Elizabeth. Name a girl Elizabeth and call her Betty and she'll probably not meet any others her age! Not too many are called Betsy or Bess, either.

But name a baby girl Clare Elizabeth and call her Clare if you're really worried about Elizabeth getting too trendy.

Do NOT name her Elizabeth Clair, though! I knew someone with this name once. She was called Clair so she signed her name E. Clair. . .

Clare/ Clair is a good name and St. Clare of Assisi is the patron saint of embroiderers.

What about Lucia ?-- great saint's name for Scandinavians.

It's hard naming boys. . . Lars is good and you can use names like Soren that would be mispronounced in other parts of the country. Tycho? Henrik?

I do love the name Clare as well.

As an Elizabeth, I have gone through periods of Little-Bit; Lizzie; Eliza, Beth and then spent my adult life as the total package: Elizabeth. My 1st and middle names are Elizabeth Amy, first being my grandmother (mother to Dad) and middle being my grandmother (mother to Mom); I've always loved the 2 together. Elizabeth Amy!

And, Nicole M., you also get 2 of the characters in "Little Women" that way as well...if you care...

:hi:

146. My favorites...
If it's a girl, I would pick Natalie Michelle... Just love those two names for various reasons. I also like the name Siobhan.

Boys' names are tougher; I actually don't have any favorites off the top of my head. If you want to give him a weird name he'll resent you for, but want to honor me :-), give him my middle name: Derwin.

Oh yeah, congratulations! :toast:

147. Lukas James or
Hannah Mae

i.e. either Lukas or Hannah depending on the sex.

These names are already fixed by myself and my girlfriend. As I'm English and she's German we need multination names and all of them are great names :)
