What's your favorite Marvin Gaye song
And do you prefer his early Motown work (esp. with Tammy Terrell) or his later work?

6. I just got a rare live CD of Marvin In Miami
it has the funkiest Inner City Blues I ever heard. It has like a claivinet sound reminiscient of Stevie Wonder's higher ground...

I think 'Here, My Dear' is his greatest work.

7. If this world were mine (with Tammy)
accompnaied my first time (you know).

It was a disaster. But the song still gives me the anticipatory chills of young love and utter excitement.

8. you sure love to ball!!!
Yikes.

Another spine tingler (and everything else too). I pity anyone born after the age of AIDS began. The late sixties and early seventies were really lots of fun for all the boys and girls who were not afraid to try it (fun).

9. I can't really choose
But I think Let's Get it On is one of the sexiest songs in the world, especially in the longer version. Also, I Wouldn't be Doggoned, I'd be Long Gone

12. heard it through the grape vine
"heard it through the grape vine"
something about the melody and the way marvin sang it still gives me the chills, but I loved everything he did. Don't think he had yet reached the limits of his talent when he died.

13. His version of the Star Spangled Banner
That he did sometime in the late 70's at one of the NBA All-Star games was one of the best versions of that song I have ever heard.

As for a national anthem, I think we could have chosen a better, nicer, and more melodic song. But the way he did that song brought a lump to my throat, it was so damned beautiful.

RIP, Marvin.

17. One more for 'Let's Get It On'
I told my son (20 years old last summer) he oughta listen to the "What's Going On" CD. Two weeks later, he comes back and tells me he's found one that "kicks its ass, Dad."

Sure enough, first cut he plays for me is "Let's Get It On." Then he lectures me for ten minutes on how Marvin Gaye was the greatest soul singer ever.
