kick-ass Polish beer.
I was up in Chicago past Labor Day weekend and did the "ethinic thang"....went to Taste of Polonia, had some of this pretty good Polish pilsner (Okocim) while listnening to some Polish rock band cover the Ramones (and another stage had some folkloric stuff too)...

....but also I went to this Polish "supermarket" on Archer Ave on the South Side (Bobaks..'plug')....this was a place where the deli staff called out your ticket number in polish...and noticed some pretty unfamiliar brews in their liquor section. I sort of hung out a bit checking out what the locals where buying, and then got some too...it was "Hevelius 'Kaper'"...and am having a stein of it right now.

Man this is some kick ass beer! A dark beer, but suprisingly strong.

So, another beer thread in the lounge. Any good beers out there that we may not have noticed yet?

1. Have a Dogfish Head
They brew several interesting concoctions, most of which are quite strong. My favorites are the Chicory Stout, Raisin D'Etre, and Immort Ale...

Thanks for the tip on the Polish brews! I'll have to try them.

2. That's why we drink it here.
Why do so many drinking establishments have limited beers on hand.

Shouldn't there be a national franchise like a starbuck's that specializes in beers from around the world. A beer joint on every street corner with 200 different beers in stock.

3. Ewwww god NOOooooo!!!!
Pleeeeeeeze no national franchises! Uck! Ptooooie!

Nice li'l local businesses with beer-lovers in mind is all we need. Let one offer 200 beers, let the one down the street offer a DIFFERENT 200. Everybody wins!

I'm hoping to visit a pretty interesting place next Saturday in Amherst. Check it out! http://www.themoananddove.com/

4. Problem is: most Beers taste best when freshly tapped.

The Beer "drinking establishments" with a good range (100-200) I know only have 5 or so on tap.
The bottled beers can be interesting, but they're never as good IMHO.

On Edit: There are very good Polish beers (most owned by Heineken) - but I had one really subterran. I can't remember the name; it was a number identical to the price.

Entschuldigen Sie mich, aber ich spreche keinen Belgier. Ich verstehe die meisten von was Sie schrieben, zwar.

That's the language she used.

What Brewer- that interests me as well. Although I don't like most aromatized beers (besides Berliner Weisse), I can appreciate a good Kriek.

9. Brouwerij Lindemans
It's not cheap -- at our socialist grocery it's $10 a bottle (750ml), about the same as a bottle of drinkable plonk from California. Unfortunately, it doesn't last anywhere near as long

It's lovely on a hot summer evening, though. Nice cherry sourness with the smooth, thick, mellow lambiek body under it.

10. Brouwerij Cantillon does a pretty nice one too!
I also enjoy Liefmans Frambozenbier...

And my Flemish isn't up-to-snuff either. ;-)
