Steinbrenner threatens to 'clean house' and fire all the managers

"I will eat your face."

Boss: Coaching Jobs Are On The Line

Never mind that the New York Yankees have the best record in the American League, and the third best mark in the majors.

Never mind that the Yankees have a 2½-game lead on the Red Sox in the AL East heading into the second game of their series Saturday afternoon.

Owner George Steinbrenner is fuming -- again. The Yankees have not played well of late and were routed by Pedro Martinez and archrival Boston Friday night. As far as the Boss is concerned, the skies are never clear in Yankeeland.

During last night's loss, a clearly frustrated Steinbrenner told The New York Post that all the coaches' jobs will be in jeopardy if the Yankees do not win the World Series this year. He indicated that manager Joe Torre and general manager Brian Cashman are on the hot seat as well.

Steinbrenner told the newspaper he is angrier at Torre's coaching staff now than in the offseason, when he said: "I think they better be a little uneasy." Steinbrenner stated yesterday that the coaches are safe through the end of this season, and made it clear how Torre can protect them: "If he turns it around and wins everything, what can I say?"

Steinbrenner did not name names, but "they know who they are." He has been critical of hitting coach Rick Down, pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre and bench coach Don Zimmer behind closed doors, according to the Post.

Clemens yanked in fourth inning
Saturday, September 06

NEW YORK (AP) -- Not even when Babe Ruth played for the Boston Red Sox had they romped this way.

Nomar Garciaparra, Kevin Millar and Todd Walker homered as the Red Sox posted their biggest shutout victory in New York, routing Roger Clemens and the Yankees 11-0 Saturday.

"Our offense is scary," said Johnny Damon, who had two hits and drove in two runs. "It's someone different every day."

On this afternoon, everyone seemed to take part as the Red Sox won their fifth in a row and sent New York to its third straight loss. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield did his part, too, pitching seven scoreless innings.

With chants of "Let's go Red Sox!" reverberating through the crowd of 55,237, Boston cut the Yankees' edge in the AL East to 1.5 games, their slimmest margin since July 29.

"When they get a hittable ball, they're hitting it, that's for sure," Clemens said. "They're hotter than a pistol right now."

A day after Yankees owner George Steinbrenner besieged his players and staff during a 9-3 loss, the Boss was not seen as the Red Sox romped to a 7-0 lead. After it was over, he was virtually silent -- as were his hitters.

2. And from the Globe...
Boston chased Clemens with six runs in the fourth inning, sending the Rocket to his earliest exit -- not related to an injury -- since June 6, 1999, against the New York Mets.

Many of the same Boston fans who gave Clemens a standing ovation last Sunday at Fenway Park to thank him for all his years in Beantown derisively serenaded with catcalls of "Ro-ger, Ro-ger" before he trudged off the mound after only 3 1-3 innings.

While Clemens (13-9) fell to 2-3 vs. the Red Sox this year in his final regular-season appearance against them, Wakefield (10-6) bamboozled the Yankees with his knuckleball.

Wakefield shut out New York on four hits for seven innings, and won for the first time in six starts. He retired the first 11 batters as Boston piled up a big lead and escaped mild threats the next two innings.

4. I remember when this was almost a weekly event.
"Yankees lose game, Steinbrenner threatens humanity". He didn't get that rep for nothing but has been quieted somewhat by his team's recent success. Once an asshole, always an asshole.

6. I was hoping he would mellow with age...
but it looks like Steinbrenner is out of control once again. He can't be serious. Joe Torre is one of Baseball's best managers. Maybe he'll fire him and then re-hire him like five times. He's done stranger things.

7. Please fire Torre so I can hate the Yankees again! Pleeeeeeease!
Steinbrenner can't be any more than managing general partner; the Yanks are much too big for one owner. You'd think somebody would depose this clown before he can fire the best thing to hit the Bronx since the Babe.

10. This is stupidity on George's part
Torre is the reason (you tried BUYING world championships before) for those championships. He brought National League baseball to the AL and won with it. It is probably Torre's last year anyway but this is disrespectful.

Hey Bobby Valentine is available. :bounce: Then I could really hate the Yankees.

BTW-Jeremy Giambi was SAFE!!!!!!!!!

8. George...
may have a point here,Giambi,Matsui and Williams are about 18 for 150
in there at bats.It is never the players faults, especially when it is George that hand picked Giambi and Matsui.Perhaps the "boss"will bring back Billy the kid?(I know, bad taste)I could actually care
less about the yanks problems,we have a championship to win.GO SOX.
