182 in a 55 zone...and drunk
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/faenza1.html

SEPTEMBER 4--While we normally don't concern ourselves with speeding arrests, we're making an exception in the case of one Dr. William Faenza. The 35-year-old New York City man was arrested Sunday after Pennsylvania cops clocked his 1997 Lamborghini Diablo going a remarkable 182 mph on State Road 443 (a 55 mph zone). According to the below criminal complaint, a tipsy Faenza was not only moving at Jeff Gordon speeds, he was driving recklessly and sped away from pursuing cops. After getting stuck in traffic at about 6 PM, Faenza, a research chemist who was in the area visiting family, refused police orders to exit the blue sports car, but finally relented and "stumbled out of the vehicle." Faenza failed a field sobriety test, which cops administered after smelling booze on his breath and noting that his eyes were bloodshot.

30. I Was A Research Chemist, And I Sure Couldn't
So, i can't give you an answer. I know what people in this industry make, and man that is a pricey ride for a chemist.

3 Possibilities:
1) Foradalom's explanation. Bathtub rec drugs?
2) One huge reward for a successfully marketed product developed in his lab from whatever company he works for.
3) Rich parents.

Especially if he's an MD PhD. My brother is a research scientist in the NYC area with those degrees and a big phat research grant. I'm not gonna blab exactly what he's making, but if his priorities were such, he could afford a car like that.

BTW, that reminds me, I have to call him tonight.

DALLAS - July 17, 2003 - Isotag announced today the acquisition of Calyx, Inc., a technical leader in the authentication industry with significant expertise in the pharmaceutical industry. The firm is led by Dr. William Faenza, MD, PhD, who becomes Isotag's new Chief Technology Officer.

Calyx develops overt and covert security ink technology for brand protection and the prevention of product counterfeiting. The company specializes in multi-tiered solutions that can be combined with standard or secure proprietary symbology. The solutions can be adapted for use with machine reading systems, vision systems, and database-linked barcode systems.

Board Team
Our background

In the early 1990s, two Texas oilmen patented the commercial application of covert identification processes developed by scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 1995, they formed what would eventually become Isotag, Inc. to provide clients with a unique, tamper-proof technology for protecting products from adulteration and counterfeiting.

Lee Barberito, chairman of the board, is President of Manti Resources, a privately held, highly successful exploration and production company founded in 1989. Prior to that he worked in various capacities for Exxon and Netherland & Sewell. He is also co-founder of CIMEX BioTech.

Craig Johnstone, board member, is a veteran of U.S. diplomatic service. Johnstone served under the Secretary of State in the Reagan and Clinton administrations and continues to serve the department as a consultant to Secretary Colin Powell.

Gerald Greenwald, board member, recently founded Greenbriar Equity Group, a company focused on private equity investments in the global transportation sector. The former Chairman and CEO of United Airlines, he has also served as Vice Chairman of Chrysler Corporation and held various positions at Ford Motor Company.

David Moxam, board member and CEO, is a leading industry voice on advanced authentication technologies. He is an active speaker and has appeared in numerous industry publications and television programs. He is also a 15-year veteran of the information technology industry including the successful turnaround of Starpoint Solutions - a private, Goldman Sachs-backed technical consulting firm that delivers complex digital products for the financial services industry and 10 years as a senior executive with $21 billion global professional services firm EDS.

13. Isotag Technology: major clients are OIL AND GAS !!!!
Oil and Gas
Keeping your products flowing smoothly to market

Oil products are especially vulnerable to tampering or contamination. Cross-hauling, commingling of fuels, environmental liability, product dilution and diversion all can lead to major problems.

That's where we step in. Our markers let you track your products from the terminal to the tank, and every point in between. And that's just the beginning. Because our technology is also easily applied to interwell waterflood tracers for fluid flow modeling, and our drilling mud tracers make core analysis more accurate. The result? Increased productivity and enhanced profitability.

14. whoo hoo!
A friend claimed he was speeding this fast in the radar shadow of an 18 wheeler and slowed down enough to get only a 90 MPH ticket on the interstate...but he was sober at the time so had quick reflexes despite his age. The car was a Porsche but I can't tell one from another. He claimed it easily did 180 MPH though...when he got married, his wife sold that sucker.

Not sure if it was relevant but my friend was also in a technical field. Do they have macho issues?

The fastest I've ever been as a passenger is 147 in a Porsche 944 turbo. The fastest I've ever driven is 130 in my 911 (it's 20 years old and gets a little squirrely above 120).

I'll certainly believe 160 or so with a non-race Porsche, though...and that's PLENTY fast.

This must be an issue with US-Porsches - AFAIR most make it over 300 kph. 200 - 250 kph should't be a problem (most Audis, Mercedes, BMWs, etc go that fast)

That's a good cruise speed - 140-160 kph. Heck, my mother's mini-van goes faster than that :P (and rarely goes slower ;-) )

Speeding is very important for Germans - the car-clubs are roughly as powerful as the Gun-Lobby in the US.

Edit:
This article has a nice way of saying it:
--snip
Much of life on the German roads is conducted at a gentler pace, though not all. I was interested to see in a report on a Formula One car race that Michael Schumacher had won with an average speed of, from memory, 170 kilometres an hour.

If the champion driver were to maintain that rate on the autobahn he would find a very large Mercedes up his boot.

Even the 600's and AMG's top out at only 150mph (240km/hr)or so here.

Shit, I regularly hit 120-130mph (200km/h) on the Autobahn with a Fiat years ago. Can't imagine why an AMG wouldn't really fly over a Fiat.

and I stand corrected...a GT1 will, indeed, break 200mph. I'm simply saying that there are very few street-driven Porsches that can hit 180mph.

47. That's why I wrote 300 kph
What is still less than 200 mph, but more than 180mph.

Anyway: there are driving schools advertizing that they teach their students how to drive at 300kph on the Autobahn. Usually they add proudly that they're using a Porsche for these lessons.

182 mph is three miles per minute. This is a state highway with a 55mph limit, so I assume it's a two-laner. Also, nearly every state road I've ever been on in Pennsylvania has been hilly and winding. Plus, with 6 p.m. traffic, I have a difficult time seeing how he could achieve, much less maintain, a speed of 182mph without ramming either another car or running into an animal or tree...

Especially considering that he was also drunk on his :dem:

35. well, I am suspicious as well
but I assume this is an SV, since the 97 stock diablos topped out at 185.

but look at it this way. The SV can hit 145 in a quater mile from a standstill. if he had, say, a half mile to play with he could hit 175 or so from a standstill, and easily get 185 if he started at even 55.

my other question: what cop in a crown vic caught this motherfucker?

Seeing as even today's top liter bikes don't break 10 seconds, and even the McLaren F-1 is only 11.1@138mph, hitting 145 in the quarter seems just a bit, oh, optimisic for the Lambo.

This makes me sick. This makes me re-think my position on the death penalty. Too many people drive, and too many people drive like assholes. When will people realize that they have other people's lives in their hands every time they start their cars? After 3 tickets, a person should just have their licence removed forever. That would force cities to build better public transportation.

The one that sticks in my head was the 141mph on a motorcycle.

Granted he was on aligator alley, a long straight road... still you would slide so far along the ground, seems like it would grind through any protective gear you had on.. no to mention you'd end up in the sawgrass with the 'gators.....

But I saw tickets for 125+ at least once or twice a day.
