GYWO - "I can't believe it's already been two years."
So, I open my latest copy of Rolling Stone, and as usual, go straight to the main reason why I did not cancel my subscription a few months ago - page 16 - David Rees

What I found was the most perfect and devestating two panels of "Get Your War On" that I've ever read. The strip needs no introduction, except to say that you should pick up this issue, as Rees does not reprint those strips on his site, and that I'll be clipping it out and carrying it close to my heart this week. It's a symbolic gesture because, I/We have been carrying it around anyway in one form or another for 2 years...

Get Your War On
by David Rees
RS Issue 931, September 18, 2003

First Panel: Man on phone

"I can't believe it's already been two years. I'm so exhausted - I feel like I started running a marathon on September 12th, 2001, and I haven't stopped since. And I'm fucking sick of it. I'm sick of feeling like I gotta read the newspaper every day. I'm sick of having to open my atlas every goddamn time there's a new terror threat. I'm sick of President Bush acting like half our allies in the war on terrorism aren't total fucking creeps. I'm sick of Donald Rumsfeld's gray skin and naked contempt. I'm sick of feeling queasy every time I go to the gas station. I'm sick of trying to remain optimistic. I'm sick of hearing about refugees and kids with no fucking arms. I'm sick of left-wingers and right-wingers slinging shit and trying to out patriot each other. I'm sick of Lower Manhattan's skyline looking like... Decatur, or some fucking two-bit wannabe metropolis. And I'm sick of all the tattered, fading flags - buy a new fucking flag if you're such a patriot, for fuck's sake! I'm sick of my friends being unemployed. I'm sick of my kids asking me when the world will be better. I'm sick of not trusting anyone with a microphone. I'm truly sick of dumb motherfuckers who think Saddam Hussein had something to do with it. I'm sick of think tanks. Fucking stupid think tanks - would you stop thinking and fucking fix something, for fuck's sake? I'm sick of people who argue with me. I'm sick of worrying if I've been wrong all along. I'm sick of people writing speeches for children and giving them to adults. I'm sick of Joe Lieberman. Please, please shut up, Joe Lieberman. I'm sick of sirens. I'm sick of the smell of alcohol. I'm sick of crying when I hear Rhapsody in Blue. I'm sick of sometimes feeling empty."

Second Panel: Woman on other end of phone

"You know what I'm sick of? I'm sick of my cousin being dead."

3. "Meet me in a land of hope and dreams"
Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down the tracks
You don't know where you're goin'
But you know you won't be back
Darlin' if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
And we'll leave the rest

Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

I will provide for you
And I'll stand by your side
You'll need a good companion for
This part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past

Big wheels roll through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

This train
Carries saints and sinners
This train
Carries losers and winners
This Train
Carries whores and gamblers
This Train
Carries lost souls
This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'
This Train
Carries broken-hearted
This Train
Thieves and sweet souls departed
This Train
Carries fools and kings
This Train
All aboard

This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'

4. Swan Swan H
Swan, swan, hummingbird
Hurrah, we are all free now
What noisy cats are we
Girl and dog he bore his cross

Swan, swan, hummingbird
Hurrah, we are all free now
A long, low time ago, people talk to me
Johnny Reb what's the price of fans?
Forty a piece or three for one dollar?
Hey captain don't you want to buy
Some bone chains and toothpicks?

Night wings, her hair chains,
Here's your wooden greenback, sing
Wooden beams and dovetail sweep
I struck that picture ninety times,
I walked that path a hundred ninety,
Long, low time ago, people talk to me

A pistol hot cup of rhyme
The whiskey is water, the water is wine
Marching feet, Johnny Reb, what's the price of heroes?
Six and one half dozen the other,
Tell that to the captain's mother,
Hey captain don't you want to buy,
Some bone chains and toothpicks?

Night wings, her hair chains
Swan, swan, hummingbird
Hurrah, we are all free now
What noisy cats are we

Long, low time ago, people talk to me
A pistol hot cup of rhyme,
The whiskey is water, the water is wine.

All songs from the album LIFE'S RICH PAGEANT Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe© 1986

5. last kick...

Was it luck or No Fault Government

"Is it luck that aberrant stock trades were not monitored? Is it luck when 15 visas are awarded based on incomplete forms? Is it luck when Airline Security screenings allow hijackers to board planes with box cutters and pepper spray? Is it luck when Emergency FAA and NORAD protocols are not followed? Is it luck when a national emergency is not reported to top government officials on a timely basis?

To me luck is something that happens once. When you have this repeated pattern of broken protocols, broken laws, broken communication, one cannot still call it luck.

If at some point we don't look to hold the individuals accountable for not doing their jobs properly then how can we ever expect for terrorists not to get lucky again?

And, that is why I am here with all of you today. Because, we must find the answers as to what happened that day so as to ensure that another September 11th can never happen again.

Commissioners, I implore you to answer our questions. You are the Generals in the terrorism fight on our shores. In answering our questions, you have the ability to make this nation a safer place and in turn, minimize the damage if there is another terrorist attack. And, if there is another attack, the next time, our systems will be in place and working and luck will not be an issue."

Mindy Kleinberg is a founding member of September 11th Advocates, a family advocacy group that spearheaded the grassroots effort for the establishment of the independent commission on September 11th.

Her husband Alan Kleinberg was a NASDAQ security trader with Cantor Fitzgerald in the NorthTower of the WTC on the 104th Floor. He was 39 and had been a NASDAQ security trader for 15 years.

Mrs. Kleinberg is a Certified Public Accountant. She met her husband when they both worked at Deloitte-Touche, but she left the accounting profession to become a stay-at-home mom. She lives in New Jersey with her three children; Jacob 11; Lauren 8 and Sam 4.
