Pop-up stoppers to download.
The only one I know about is Panicware, which is $30. Are there any reliable free hopefully or cheaper ones out there?

1. Google
offers a Google "tool bar" that you can download for free and one of the features is a pop-up stopper. It even keeps track of how many pop-ups it's blocked for you--which I find quite soul-satisfying.

6. Thanks!
I just downloaded it. I can't change my browser because it is through work but I could do the Google thing. How do you check to see how many pop-ups it has stopped?

7. Google won't block pop-ups that originate through AIM
pop-up stopper does. I use the Google toolbar for other reasons but it will not stop pop-ups that come through AIM (instant messenger). Pop stopper is free and easy to use.

2. Switch to Avant Browser
Stops pop ups instantly and it's a much more efficient user friendly browser.

www.avantbrowser.com

I have 7 pages currently open in one browser, using a ton less resources then opening several browsers, and I can tab through each page as I see fit.

Check it out, you'll never us IE again!

4. Yeah, I use Opera
And it works the same way. Several pages open in one browser. No pop-ups. The kicker is the "Mouse Gestures" in Opera. Check it out: http://www.opera.com/features/mouse/

3. I've been using Mozilla and it's been great.
It's based off of Netscape and it's free.

I also downloaded ZoneAlarm firewall and it seems to be working well too. Free also.

8. Mozilla Firebird problem (?)
I just downloaded Mozilla Firebird & tried using it to go to a New York Times news story. Instead of going to the newstory, it took me to the NYT registration page. I am already registered with the NYT & other papers to access stories & articles....do I need to do all this again via Mozilla or can I "import" these registrations ?

10. Your Firebird doesn't have the NY Times cookie yet.
Once you sign in it will have the cookie and you won't run into this again.

12. OPERA!!!!
Opera is free to use, but has a small banner add in the top right corner (which btw, mine had an add for the "America's Least Wanted - a definate anti-bush deck of cards).

HOWEVER!!!! There is an option that allows you to disable all popup boxes except those you click on. (Our box with Smilies Lookup is considered a pop-up box, which I can access). I haven't seen a popup ad at home in over 6 months since I started to use Opera as my browser!!!

14. I have pop up stopper pro...
from panicware...we downloaded it off Kazaa, complete with registration number. I've since emailed it to everyone I know. I'll look for it and if you want it, Private message me your email. It's great. (Disclaimer: I promise I won't sell your email address or spam you. In fact, I won't even save it. It pisses me off when people do that)
