I went to the bar mitzvah of a friend's son...oy vey so ask already!!!

All weekend I have been busy celebrating the bar mitzvah of a friend's son...it was an awesome experience when you consider the odds this kid was up against.


I am SO proud of him!!

2. They hired this guy to get

people motivated to dance and he was HOT! HOT! HOT! He was from Argentina and struck quite to pose in his tight black pants....

Because this family is conservadox and more observant the party did not take place until today as they had it at the synagogue.

3. I heard about parties that have people like that...

so did you get his number?

4. No, I did not get his number but I did

have the courage to tell him he was hot and trust me that took a lot.

Knowing this kid as I do I think it was a worthwhile investment for his parents to hire party people as they did.

They get people onto the dance floor and get them to move their feet. I loved it!

5. I spent seven hours at a party yesterday...but it was

a tailgator...no dancing.

6. Sounds like fun...the wife of a friend was telling me about someone

she knows who had a son who was a rabid football fan. For his bar mitzvah (remember this is a 13 year old KID) his father rented out the orange bowl! Talk about excessive!

8. I never had a bat mitzvah either...

I cannot imagine spending heaps and gobs of money on a party for a 13 year old. But then again I don't understand people spending a lot of money on a wedding...I'd rather use that kind of money as a downpayment on a house.

Then again I come from pretty solid working-class roots...

9. I like to waste money...and sometimes...the memories are worth it.

My junior high tried to discourage parents from going overboard for the commencement ceremonies for us. Did not work.

10. I suppose if your parents had the money to spare it's

different but my mom never had a lot to spare so it is something I cannot understand.
Outside my realm of experience.

I have a co-worker who took out a $9,000 loan against her 401k for her daughter's wedding. She had a horse drawn carriage and the whole works.

This co-worker already lives hand to mouth and works two jobs. This is the type of individual that should not be putting on lavish celebrations, IMHO. As I said a couple of posts ago.....if she really wanted to give her daughter something perhaps the $9k could have been used more wisely as a downpayment on a house.

12. Too many parents think they OWE their kids a big

wedding regardless of their ability to pay. One of my sisters had a big wedding and she paid for it herself. She knew my mom could not pay for it that's for sure.

13. I learned something at a bar mitzvah once:

My son's best friend's.

It was 13 years ago; the only thing I remember is something the rabbi said to the candidate. The bar mitzvah honoree. Whatever the title is. He said,

"Whatever you do, always, always keep learning. Never stop questioning. Question your teachings and your teachers. If it's truth, your questions will lead you back to it. If it isn't, you'll be further on the path to truth."

This young man graduated from Berkeley last spring. He turned Harvard down to attend Yale. He's going to be a civil rights attorney.

14. The essence of Judaism is to question....

that kid had a good rabbi! Jews do not accept the Torah as literal not even the orthodox. I had a rabbi (Reform) say in a sermon that anyone who iterprets the bible literally was seen as evil by the rabbis who compiled the Talmud.

For too many families the Jewish education for their child ends at 13 but it wont for this kid and it seems it did not for your friend either. That is awesome!!!
