My 401K Investments Make Me Ineligible to Run for Democratic Office
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 01:01 PM by RationalRose
<sarcasm on>
and I have a house in Cape Cod too, in addition to my primary residence, so I guess that makes me ineligible to ever run for public office.

Some of the stocks in my 401K:

Walmart
GE
Pfizer
Target

Oh no! Those are in some of our candidates' portfolios too!

I also drive a car (a fuel efficient Japanese car but still a car).

So I guess even running for dog catcher is out of the question!

1. Damn straight!
And, in addition, it appears that you have spent money on a computer and internet access instead of giving that money to the poor! What the hell is wrong with you? :evilgrin:

2. Yuk yuk
I do find it amusing that many people think:

Rich = Republican
Middle Class = Democrat, some Republican
Poor = Democrat

I think it is much more mixed up than that. Why more people don't vote Democrat is based on great marketting by Republicans.

4. I have to agree with RobertSeattle!
It's a little more complex than Rich=Republican and Poor=Democrat!

Look at the south! This is the poorest area in the country and they vote Republican!

23. Touche
You can't make it into most higher offices (mayor and above) unless you've got disposable $$$. We are a democratic/plutocratic republic.

3. It's not even your investments. Has your husband ever been to a strip show
Based on the logic in that thread, that would make YOU a person who objectifies women...after all, your husband did it.

6. Yes, my husband is a dog
at least he admits it. I think he has been to strip joints on the occasion of his brothers' and friends bachelor parties.

he also has a tendency to address women as dear or sweetie.

I guess I'm a neanderthal underneath my guise of civility and setting the women's movement back 1000 years!

I guess I should divorce him!

13. You, Rational Rose are a female chauvinist pig,
if your husband went to a strip bar, that makes you a female cahuvinist pig. If you can sew...that makes him a girlie man...get it?

If so, then you took the money you could have saved right out of the mouths of the poor, and you are a republican :eyes:

10. I go out to eat ALL THE TIME
so I guess we're exploiting the bartenders and waiters who rely on our generosity to survive, and those poor dishwashers in the kitchens! Our selfish need to experience different cuisines is forcing them to work under the table for minimum wage!

8. Socially responsible investing
There are many companies that are much more socially responsible that he could have the money in, as ordinary investments or IRA's.

It is not unreasonable to expect a liberal candidate to do this.

Those in 401k's often have little choice on this (I pushed for a socially responsible fund in our 401k choices and failed).

My IRA money is all in socially resonsible funds (Citizens Funds, Parnassus Funds).

This is not a Kerry bash, as I wouldn't be surprised if all the other candidates (probably except Kucinich) invested similarly to Kerry.

9. I don't like Wal*Mart
They pretty much accused my mom of being a theif and she did nothing! She was going to pay for some merchandise with some checks and the cashier thought the checks were fradulent and called security, the security grabbed her in front of a bunch of shoppers and took her into this little room, later the police came buy to start interrogating her. She stated her case and of course they had to let her go because she wasn't doing anything wrong in the first place. She came home crying, mostly because they embarrased her in front of a store full of shoppers, and that was not the only time me and her and problems with Wal*Mart. I will never EVER shop there again, I also read of some pretty nasty stories of how Wal*mart mistreated their customers and their employers. I walk an extra block to Target from now on if I want to purchase something.

11. I hate Walmart too
but I don't disparage people for making smart investments that may be crucial to their retirement in an insecure world. I don't shop at Walmart, it just happens to be in my 401K. I prefer Target too.

the company my mom works for which she despises because they layed her off and moved their company over to China, and pretty much treated their employees like pawns, she owns their stock.

19. Yes, you're ineligible
Don't you know that if you own property, you're evil? Every calorie you eat rather than let someone else eat is class warfare against the poor. You should also know that every person who eats eats because he stole the food from others. Come on, haven't you read Marx?

21. I forgot-I voted for a Republican ONCE
I voted for Bill Weld for Governor against John Silber, a Democrat. You see, John Silber was anti-choice and pro-school voucher and a genuine asshole. Bill Weld was a liberal Republican in the New England tradition (pro-choice, pro-affirmative action, pro-social spending).

But now my credibility is really tarnished. I can never run for anything-not dog catcher, not school committee.

Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 05:06 PM by Demobrat
I have Clear Channel in mine. Also Apple, where Al Gore is on the board, but I doubt if that excuses me. And...I have bought and sold illegal drugs...and...I had an abortion. I can not only never run for office, I'm not even fit to be a Democrat. But I'm not only going to vote for Dean anyway, I'm going to work my butt off for him. And if anybody doesn't like it...neener, neener, neener. I'm not poor and I'm a Democrat anyway. HAH!

On edit: I have a second home, and I'm a landlord, but my "primary residence" is a rental, so I guess I'm only a half bad person.
