Who's warming up for hunting season?
I am! I just bought a new bow (Mathews FX) and I can't wait to get out into my tree stand.

So, who else is getting ready for the upcoming seasons?

42. Kewl! Thanks.
For all I know I may have been an ass...or i was just being me...always the formidable opponent :D

Can I ask an honest question without getting my ass kicked?

Lower in the thread you answered that hunting is an expensive sport..so..the kill really isn't cheapnor is it done to feed yourself.

I HONESTLY am asking..what is it about killing something that is so much fun?

Don't get me wrong...I have often fantsized about a few of the cars driving slow in the fast lane in front of me but really and I am not asking this to trap you, make you wrong or be an ass ...what is it about killing a live animal that is so much fun. Really?

45. The killing part SUCKS
I hate it. The fun comes in waking up with the denizens of the forest, having squirrel pretty much walk on you (cause you're all camo'd up), breathing the fresh air.

That's why I choose not to pull the trigger as much as I do. Sometimes I just hate to ruin the moment with killing something, but other times, that's what I'm out there for.

Last year, I saw some poor deer running around my neighborhood with an arrow dangling out of its hide. A clean shot would have killed him. Only take clean shots when you are sure you will kill.

I will also choose not to shoot at more deer than not. Sometimes the fun of the hunt is just getting to the point where you can shoot, and then deciding not to.

Maybe you can go hunt for bears and wolves so you can complain along with other hunters that overpopulation of deer is caused by too many hunting restrictions.

60. The hunters are out for doves locally.
I was following my favorite trail on my horse saturday morning, coming up over a rise by the little pond where a blue heron lives year-round; I always stop to watch the heron for awhile. When the gun went off, my mare catapulted in to the air, spun around, tried, to bolt, and when I said no, stood there and trembled. The dove hunters waved, and assured me they would wait for me to get by. So I went by, and as soon as we had passed them, they shot again from about 20 yards behind us. Repeat scenario. On the up side, we weren't injured. On the down side, my mare was literally lathered from fright and adrenaline; not exactly a peaceful journey from there on out. And we didn't see much local wildlife, bird or otherwise, on that ride.

Quail season doesn't open for a couple of months yet.

Dove season is open now, and early teal starts in a week or two, but it's still too warm. It just doesn't feel right unless there's a nip in the air and the pointer's getting frisky.

49. Out here in Carmel Valley, it's wild boar vs. man with knife and dogs
The wild pigs around here can be quite the ecological problem, and there are some folks out in the Big Sur/Carmel Valley area who track them down with 4 or 5 Lousiana Catahoula Leopard Hounds and, when they find them, going in with these big Bowie knives.

No thanks. I would think a 10 gauge mag with a slug would be a little more predictable.

56. See, now that's just fucked up.......
Go hunting if you want to and if you can do it legally and responsibly, but IMHO you have an ethical duty to at least TRY to make the animal's death as quick as possible.

Hunting using hounds and knives is, IMHO, inexcusable unless you happen to be a member of a hunter/gatherer society with no alternative means of killing for food.

Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 12:40 AM by Pert_UK
Personally I don't hunt, as I don't get much of a chance in the UK. However, it strikes me that some of the "arguments" on here against it are absurd.

Somebody like you who hunts for meat and shows restraint should be regarded as a role model.

The argument on here (can't remember who from) that basically said "You should buy your meat from a supermarket rather than shoot it" is one of the most ignorant things that I have read on DU.

That's right - you should BUY meat from an animal that has been kept in captivity and pumped full of god-knows-what drugs and then crammed into a truck and taken to a factory that stinks of death and terror and killed in a horribly inhumane manner, before being sent down a production-line staffed by strangers.

That is FAR preferable to taking a single shot at an animal who has lived free and probably doesn't even hear or barely feels the shot and then butchering it yourself.....

Basically, if you're a vegetarian then just maybe you can claim some moral high-ground, but to spew out such crap as "buy it from the supermarket" as a less cruel alternative is just bizarre.

My suspicion is that you're a lot more appreciative of the meat and more likely to acknowledge an animal's death than someone who picks up a pre-packed steak from the chill cabinet...

One possible point of criticism.....How large are the animals you go after, and how often do you get a clean kill?

55. And your point is?
Superfly has, to the best of my knowledge, demonstrated a responsible attitude towards hunting for food and an adherence to the law.

Personally, I have reservations about hunting with bows, but only because I don't know anything about it and I am concerned that there is more scope for injuring, rather than making a clean kill. However, I'll wait for some evidence before I make any decision on it, and am giving Fly the benefit of the doubt at the moment.

Saying that you know irresponsible hunters doesn't entail that all hunters are irresponsible. Nor have you shown why hunting is necessarily a crueler way to obtain meat than buying it in the shop.

(Checks pulse and temperature) Hmmm....I seem to be defending Superfly - I'm fairly sure he'll be surprised about that!

59. Surprised? Nah, I'm really a nice guy
once you get past all the guns and stuff. Ha, ha, ha.

A couple points:

-Bowhunting vs. rifle hunting.

I've been hunting since I was 8 years old and my first method was using a rifle (30-06) under the direct supervision of my father. I've hunted pretty much each season, even in Germany, and consider myself an expert shot at short to intermediate ranges (I would never even try a shot past 100 yds...just too much room to wound vs kill a deer.)

In all those years, I've shot a couple deer that've run up to 1/2-3/4 mile before dying.

About 6 years ago, I picked up bowhunting and all the deer I've taken that way have dropped within sight of my treestand, eliminating the need for time-consuming tracking and recovery of the deer. Not to mention the 100% recovery rate of the carcass.

-Responsibility of hunters

I've only seen 2 instances of irresponsible hunters in all my years of hunting. Real quickly, once I was duck hunting with my bride-to-be. We arrived at a 1-acre pond early, set up our decoys, and started calling the ducks. At about shooting light, a truck pulls up directly across the pond, about 50 yards away and starts throwing out decoys.

I shined my flashlight at them a few times to let them know where we were, but they still engaged in something we call sky-busting (shooting at ducks that are out of range, or on the edge of instant-kill range), and they shot in our direction all the time. We were continuosly pelted with lead shot, until I stood up, yelled at them that I am pressing charges, after which they un-assed the area.

I don't think many hunters out there like to be around irresponsible partners...the risk of injury or death is just so much higher as a result of negligence. I know, personally, that I will not hunt with another person after they exhibit only one instance of boneheadedness. Besides being dangerous, it also ruins the entire experience...you have to watch your back.

And Pert, I'm sure that if you and I met, I think that we could become friends. Besides having DU in common, your arguments are energetic and very well presented, which makes my job harder! ha, ha, ha...

Brian

Check the final item on the page for the only approriate form of hunting, IMHO.

68. Hmmmm...an article advocating killing people....
even if tongue in cheek, is still in bad taste.

Recently (this past Wednesday), I took a 4 hour drive in the middle of the night through a country "back road". I passed at least a hundred deer eating alongside of the road, generally in groups of 3-5 deer. As I drove past them, they generally either ignored me or stared at me. It seems to me like we have a deer overpopulation problem now. We'll see how many of them end up starving to death this winter.

And no, I don't hunt big animals. I HAVE hit a deer with my car before. Deer overpopulation is no laughing matter.

63. I hunt year round....
of course, I only hunt insects, especially ants and bag caterpillars. I don't use a gun, just a spray bottle.

Can anybody recommend a good ant taxidermist? ;-)

66. With respect to the posts
in this thread, about how it is mean to huntill animals, even for food, your arguments are all flawed. So you think it is wrong for someone to go out and hunt and kill an animal maybe instantly, yet most of you(only around 5% of the country is vegetarian) eat meat, and are therefore also supporting the killing of animals. Acknowledge that an animal had to die to make your hamburger or your fried chicken, I always do. You're just hypocritical to rip on hunters while you eat meat yourself, and most likely wear leather and wool.

70. i agree and i'll expand
animal farming is killing our enviroment.
it takes massive amounts of land and water to get one hamburger on your plate. massive amount of chemicals, too. and what about the run off?
for all the grain, etc, that is grown just to feed the factory farm animals you could stamp out hunger.
and the animals are mistreated from farm to killing plants. how would like to face a misdirected bolt or be strung up by your legs?

the fact is, most people don't think about the animal and what it has gone through to end up in the grocery store nicely packaged. the convenient grocery store also allows for people to be gluttons when it comes to eating meat. that would surely change if more people had to hunt for their meat.

so unless you're a vegetarian or vegen you contribute just as pain and suffering to an animal's life, and can be branded a killer too, as any hunter is.

78. Wow a new argument I had never heard before
You are a trendsetter. :eyes: No I think people should run around shooting living things they can buy in a grocery store freezer..

So if I shoot you, it's OK as long as I eat you? I'm pretty sure I could prepare a human though on some the brain would probably have the most gristle.
