It's 10th grade. Geometry isn't usually taught until after an introductory algebra class usually in 9th grade.

I'm not complaining cause I did bad (10/10), but i was a CS major. They threw in some tough ones to make you feel stupid.

I'm teaching 5th and 6th grade this year. Our math texts are aligned with our state standards (CA). I just gave the kids the end of the year test for their previous grade level to see where they were at. The end of the year 5th grade test includes 2 calculations requiring knowledge of triangle formulas. The end of the year 4th grade test requires students to take a string of numbers and give range, median, mode, and mean. Among many other things.

I could go on. The point is that the tough problems aren't uncommon. You'll find plenty of questions that tough on the standardized tests that all children in the nation are required to take, and have scores by school reported in the press.

Let a=4, b=3, c=unknown hypotenuse

4 squared + 3 squared = ? squared (4x4)+(3x3)=25

16 + 9 = 25 The square root of 16 is 4, root of 9 is 3,
root of 25 is 5.

5 is the hypotenuse (the magic number!)

To calculate the area: length x width
8 x 5 = ?
The area of the carpet is 40 square feet

Same technique for the 'walking through the field' question.

The cube one had me all screwed up; I was coming up with a total of 13.5 square cms, not 13.5 cms squared.

Still, when did 8th graders get put on Pythagorean theorum? I was in advanced math, circa 1976-1980 and don't recall getting put on that til 10th grade geometry. Hell, we get them up at 5:30 am and make them deal with hypoteneuses, now, do we? No wonder they're failing.

Another poster on up the thread is correct - this is NOT 8th grade math. There is algebra on there, which for advanced kids (in my area at least) is not taught until ninth grade, which means 10th for most everyone else. Then there's geometry, which was 10th grade for the nerdy kids like me.

Once again, standardized testing, instead of being about actually seeing what students have learned, is a political creation to blame teachers for not teaching a test (and thus lower their salaries).

My answer to five was 54, stupid really..I put the value for the entire angle down rather than just for x.
