My God in heaven, what a beautiful album

The Olivia Tremor Control's "Dusk At Cubist Castle" is quite possibly the most mind-numbingly, heart stoppingly beautiful album I've heard since I first picked up Radiohead's OK Computer in 97. How the hell is this album not more well known? I stumbled upon it after getting into fellow Elephant 6 members Apples In Stereo, and I'm sitting here shaking after listening to it.

Words fail me at the moment. I can't do this album justice, just BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT.

1. Wow. That's quite a benediction.
I haven't felt that way about an album for a long time, except maybe The Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin.

The last time I felt that way about a song, was when I first heard the tune Jeannie's Diary by The Eels.

2. The Soft Bulletin is kids stuff compared to this album
The closest thing I can equate it to is a cross between Revolver, Smile, GBV's Bee Thousand, with a smidgen of Zappa thrown in.

It's fucking amazing. I've listened to it roughly 13 times since downloading it yesterday, and I'll be ordering a proper copy ASAP.

9. Better than The Soft Boys' 'Underwater Moonlight?'

10. Honestly? Yes
I've listened to Underwater Moonlight a handful of times in the six months or so that I've owned it. I've already played this one at least three times as much as Underwater Moonlight.

15. So are you a Neutral Milk Hotel fan as well?
"In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" is a great album.

4. Did you know about its 'sister CD'?
The first few thousand copies (I don't know exactly how many) came with a 'bonus' CD (called "Explanation II") of what they called ambient "dream sequences".

The idea is that it's to be played simultaneously with the first disc, and the effect is almost quadraphonic sound.

Kind of hard to get now, so if you don't have it, and love the first album so much, sorry for telling you.

I hope they download soon.

7. Nah, I'm 36. My father had a monster Quadraphonic receiver
back in the early 1970's when I was a kid.

I kept it until about 5 years ago. Pioneer, I think it was, and big time power and clean sound.

Of course, only Quadraphenia and Paul Simon's first solo album came out in that format, AFAIK.

8. Whoa. I just listened to samples on Amazon.
This group sounds like a mix of Big Star, the Beatles, ELO, and Pink Floyd. I didn't think such a combination existed, but I know I gotta have it! I GOT TO HAVE IT!!!

11. Throw in the KLF, and you're dead on
Your approximation of their sound is a lot better than mine. Glad you like it.

And BTW, your sig is my favorite of all DUers.

Thanks, SweetZombieJesus. And thanks for the CD recommend. One of the greatest pleasures in life is to discover music that just seems...perfect somehow.

I remember when I discovered Sigur Ros' "Agaetis Byrjun" and Blue Man Group's "Audio". I listened to those probably a hundred times the first week.

ON EDIT: I just now noticed your sig line. JOHN CARPENTER ROCKS!!

13. It is a great record. Hey SZJ, I remember that you also like Neural...
Milk Hotel. This week's Creative Loafing (Atlanta edition) has a fascinating (and perhaps disturbing) cover story about Jeff Mangum. Sorry- no link, but you should be able to find it at their site.

14. Thanks for the heads up
I really wish we had something like the Elephant 6 collective around here, but alas, all we've got is one good band and a bunch of whiny nu metalers and Creed-alikes. It's a sad, sad scene around here.
