37. There is a limited time period before a storm.
I think it is 5 days but could be mistaken. Call your insurance agent. But don't worry. I don't think this hurricane is coming our way. It's now predicted to jog to the north in a few days and by that time it may already be to your north.

14. Just an observation
My parents live in Pinellas County. All the rich, fancy houses are right on the water at 2+ feet above sea level. All the poor folks live in the interior on the "high ground" of 40 feet above sea level.
Gee, where do the rich folks go when the water rises?

6. Coupla things to do in a hurricane.
Read this years ago in the phone book while visiting South Florida (this was a long time ago, so only remember a couple).

Take all coconuts off palm trees. Scale up the tree to do it.

Tape or board up windows. That duct tape you purchased last winter might finally get a use.

Fill the bathtub full of water. For drinking and cooking, that is.

10. Homeowner's will cover wind damage
but not flooding, make sure you have enough. You have to get FEMA flood insurance for flood damage, check your rating and buy it now if you are in anything other than Zone "X".

It's cheap unless you are in Zone "A". If in Zone "A" evacuate early.

I do emergency response stuff in FLA as part of my job.

Too late. Plus, unless you're a home owner, you may have trouble getting it. Renters Insurance will reimburse you for lost Personal Property.

BTW to all of the people knocking it: Private Industry REFUSES to offer Flood Insurance so we Collectively do it.

17. Maybe not but I doubt a Private provider (What a joke, FEMA insures)
would insure a renter a just days prior to Andrew II.

Silly, I know, but that's the way they make money, by not paying out.

I was in Ft Lauderdale during Hurricane Andrew, no house got messed up. We also were not too far from Homestead, if I recall. Wouldn't the Hurrican deal fall under Natural Distaster Insurance?

21. I'm an insurance company professional. I'm an insurance co. professional
(and a democrat too, fancy that)

Florida has a windpool, which is a govt. sponsered insurance pool for wind. Call an agent, if he can't place your policy with a company, he can put it in the pool.

Beware, there are high deductibles, and premiums are high, but a lot depends on where you live (Orlando is less expensive than Miami, the keys, etc.)

Email me if you have specific questions.

24. Better make plans, Carlos
it'll prob. pass by, but make plans just in case. I believe you live in an evacuation zone so you'll need to know where the shelters are if you are evacuated. Go up and drink with SD and JM.

PS: Don't use duct tape on your windows, and if you do use masking tape, take it off as soon as you can, or the sun will bake it onto your windows. You need a good flash light, battery operated radio, plenty of batteries, water, chlorine, non-perishable foods - oh joy, btdt ....

33. Good on ya , mate
Anyway its too soon to panic, I think NYFM is onto something, she'll turn early next week. If you watch the satellite loops (noaa website has a bunch of good ones) you can see she has been following the path of a Low pressure cell out front of her, and that is swinging North now.

Still its good to know all these things to be prepared, although duct tape on windows doesnt do shit, you have to board over windows. And if its a strong cat 4 or higher thats a direct hit, ain't nothing you can do but get outta town.....forget about earthly possesions

34. Carlos
if isable turns and heads for south florida, you have a ton of time to prepare you apartment. Do not bother taping windows, it is a joke. If the owners of the complex feel it is ness they will board up. Take all of your possesions and put them in double plastic garbage bags. Pictures and stereo, tv etc are the first things you should protect. Put that type of stuff on top of a dresser, everything else put on your bed, drive to central florida and drink with the others. I hope you realize that you have days and days to prepare for this and that chances are the storm will go north.

35. can't get it while a hurricane is actually approaching
Sorry. After the storm passes, contact your homeowner's insurance agency and she'll help you get a policy. Hurricane/flood insurance is actually separate from your regular homeowner's, and I think it is some kind of federal program, because the coverage isn't too great. Huge deductible - I think it is up to $1,700 now. And lots of exclusions for this and that. But it is better than nothing if you can get it for a reasonable price. You also need to keep that $1,700 saved if you live in a flood/hurricane zone so you will be ready to pay your contractor in event of a disaster.

Don't forget, even if you don't have flood insurance, if the damage is caused by wind -- such as by a tree falling on your house -- you are ALREADY covered on your regular homeowner's insurance policy.

For instance, my home was hit by an old oak tree brought down by Bill; regular homeowner's covered this, although I have not yet received the final check. Supposedly the deductible was $500, and I will only be out $500 if and when they finished paying me off. RIght now I'm out close to $7,000...but without insurance I would already be out $32,000.

So...if you have tree or wind damage, you ARE covered. It's just flood damage for which you lack coverage.

36. My Hurricane damage deductable is $5,000
and I live in coastal Connecticut, The deductable actually applies to all wind related storm damage. I don't carry flood insurance, as I am in zone X, and live 24 feet above mean high tide. My house is about 250 yards from Long Island sound.

38. Right. Ain't no sucha thang as "hurricane" insurance.
I'm looking at the bay, 200 ' away, and I'm 6' above it.
My homeowner's covers wind and WIND DRIVEN water damage.
Gotta have flood insurance for any other water damage.
