Anyway, what I meant by having "made a mess of things" has more to do with the things I did that drove my husband to break up with me, and my inability to live where I was miserable for the kids' sake.

And yeah--that I did mess up pretty badly.

I had just found your "waiting for results" thread on the first page here, and was seriously worried. I'm now breathing a whole lot easier, and will be able to go to bed feeling good.

As to how you "messed up pretty badly" -- it sounds, from what you have posted in the past, that it was your ex who was the prime mover in breaking up the marriage. Anyone who would take your child and move away while their spouse was fighting cancer doesn't rate too highly in my book. As to not being able to live where you were miserable, I moved to Los Angeles for film school, found I couldn't stand living there, and moved to Seattle just after graduating. You read that right...as a film school graduate, my first step was to leave Hollywood and move to Seattle. But I did the right thing. If you had been miserable, it would have rubbed off on your kid as well.

Note to (your)self, Tucker -- YOU didn't drive your ex to break up with you; HE did that all by his lonesome. Anyone who walks out on their sick spouse (and it happens all the time -- approximately 60% of men leave their sick wives/girlfriends, and 40% of women leave their husbands/boyfriends) does so of their own volition, and for a variety of reasons, some understandable and some not. (In his case, more the latter than the former.)
