9/11 poem from "Warrior Poets..."

one more day

since the planes flew
into the world
trade center buildings
it's been two years.
i remember waking
up to radio
the announcer saying
like it was an accident
somebody's poor flying
after the first one
then boom! the second
we revised our estimates
seeing castles crumble
in real time
and not over centuries
is an experience
that leaves you humble
all that man has made
less than a mouse whisker
in the moonlight
not only buildings
paintings religions
even poetry
will die vanish evaporate
pfft! given enough time
a summer day
coyote will be walking
looking over his shoulder
with that grin of his
mr. mouse will run out
coyote's next meal
the shadows will be different
sunlight not the same
yet everything will be normal
as far as he knows
many worlds have fallen
before his time
many worlds will fall
time anyway is an invention
exclusively human
do bluejays wear wristwatches
redwoods have calendars?
coyote stops, pauses
trots on
mr. mouse is safe
for one more day
