Oy. The cell-phone guy started whining to me about his parents' divorce...
I had to call the cell-phone company because they goofed in sending us the paperwork for splitting off the cell phones onto separate accounts. Anyhow, they asked for the reason for the split, I told him why, and he started going off as to how hard it is on kids, and he hoped we'd thought this through. (We don't have any kids.)

Yes, I talked to his supervisor.... :eyes:

2. I would have suggested to him that he might get in trouble

for personalizing calls and invading customers privacy like that, rather than getting him in trouble right off.

If he responded inappropriately to the advice, I would have followed through on the supervisor angle.

IMO, people should be given a chance to correct their own behavior without ratting right off, unless there are personal or public safety issues.

4. Oh, I gave him the chance.
I said -- "That seems a bit personal for this business call."
He responded, "well, that's just how I feel."

5. I disagree... I think the guy was totally inappropriate and unprofessional
and she was right to report it. This is exactly why they record the calls of customer service agents. His company needs to know when he crosses the line. If he does it only once, then they most likely won't do anything, but if he does it multiple times then he should be fired. How would eyesroll know whether or not he had done it before? And how would his employer know if he had done it before unless it was reported? They don't listen to all the tapes unless there is a report. He very well could have done it many times with people advising him that it was inappropriate without informing anyone else.

7. I've talked politics with people in sales etc. over the phone...
I always find a way to segue into the discussion. I think it makes for a pleasant discussion.

Divorce, however---just to personal for me. TMI.

when you receive annoying calls tell them all about your day went what you ate for breakfast about your ingrown toenails how your bowels are coming along etc. they'll love you for it...

edited - bolded - for added emphasis / clarity...

...and even though this has nothing to do with your original subject - heh...
