Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 01:58 PM by jchild
Although I may fall asleep in the meantime, because I am soaring right now.

Ask me about southern cooking.
Ask me about the Phelps clan coming to my university tomorrow.
Ask me about the stresses of being a single mom and a phd candidate and a teacher.
Ask about my knee.
Ask about my dogs.
Ask about the quirks of southern culture.

Or tell me anything...
Tell me a good gas grill to buy.
Or a good rotisserie to buy.
Or a way to treat fleas outside. (inside is under control)
Or tell me why I enjoy sitting by fires or running water outside.
Tell me anything.

14. Southerners are quirky people...
Especially southern baptists. The most quirky thing about southern baptists is that they won't drink at home or in front of their friends, and they would never be caught at a bar in their home town, but they WILL travel across the state line to liquor stores and bars and get way drunk.

Drunkenness, said God, is not to pollute thy home, but thou can drink all of the fruit of grapes if thou travels away from home. Don't muss thine own nest.

LOL!

We had the same problem and was solved by environmentally friendly nematodes. Apparently they eat flea larvae and only flea larvae. It is a powder that you spray on your lawn. We got ours from the vet.

21. They put me completely out when they removed the screws...
and when I came to I was crying, not so much from the pain as from some emotional overload. The pain, once the local anesthesia wore off, is worse than it was when they put the screws in--it's excruciating, and I can't take a steady does of the pain med because it makes me sick.

But I am hoping to be up and around a little more tomorrow...Fred Phelps is holding a protest at my university--he's protesting against Amnesty and a couple of gay advocacy groups on campus--and I so badly want to be a part of the counterprotest. Have to wait and see, though.

So I need suggestions for a sign...might post a suggestion thread when I feel a little better.

30. Okay Question about the South...
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 06:32 PM by dnvechoes
I think I'm an anti-south bigot. I often find myself thinking that maybe Lincoln and the Confederates were wrong (not about slavery), and we should have just let the nation split, then all the Southern Limbaugh listening, gun totin', country music playin', grits eatin', cross burnin' wack jobs wouldn't be our problem.

Now, I know I'm wrong, and I've listened to many great southerners speak, and they're great, but I can't seem to shake this notion that we'd (Northerners (well, I guess Californians/west costers) would be better off without you all.

I'm over here in California and I'm listening to this complete NUT Tom McClintock yammer on. If this were a national election, I would really be scared that enough people might be duped into electing this guy. But as it's a California election, I feel safe that we'll successfully avoid him.

Please explain how I am wrong (I know I am!).

:)

david

Edit: I hope this doesn't sound too rude! I'm re-reading it and I think it could be misunderstood. Really just wanted to yap about the south and how Rush's "Bush's America" map doesn't represent you all, really...

31. All I can say is that...
you ARE an anti-south bigot, and as you know it is difficult to discuss things with bigots, much less convince them otherwise.

But, might I ask you a few questions:

Do you like listening to the blues?
Have you ever been to Mardi Gras?
Have you ever had a wonderfully delihtful glass of muscadine wine?
Do you enjoy reading southern literature or looking at the works of southern artists?
And I could go on and on...

Funny that people love to disparage the south, but they indulge in those things Southern as they choose. By the way, grits are great if they are cooked right, but you would have to have a Southerner cook them for you to know that, now wouldn't you?

I won't even go off on the history of the Civil War and its consequences, but let me say this. There are plenty of gun toting, country-music listening, cross burning, racist, sexist, Limbaugh listening people in other regions--you can't pin all of the nation's social ills on the South. Hell, we have a Democratic governor who NO ONE has attempted to recall--can YOU say that???

If you want to think of us as "Dukes of Hazzard" hicks, then probably nothing I can say will change your mind. If you ask me, Californians have no right whatsover to belittle other regions or call southerners nuts considering the state of politics in YOUR home state right now.

34. I'm sorry! I didn't mean to offend...
Though I think I realized I probably would.

Basically what I mean to say is that I, never having been to the south or known many southerners, basically only have these views that I receive from the media, Rush, Country Music, etc. so I assume that EVERYONE in the south is like that.

What I really wanted was a little education on the South so I could understand it better. I believe there's lots of good down there, and lots of good people, but I don't *know* any of them, and I'd like to know more about them.

So, I do apologize for not expressing myself properly, but I'm glad to see that you're happy with the South, and it makes me feel like I know a *bit* more than I did before.

Anyway, to answer your questions:

> Do you like listening to the blues?

Absolutely!

> Have you ever been to Mardi Gras?

No, but we have a Mardi Gras celebration every year in a town nearby. It's probably a pathetic excuse for a Mardi Gras celebration when compared to the real thing, though.

> Have you ever had a wonderfully delihtful glass of muscadine wine?

No, I don't know what it is...

>Do you enjoy reading southern literature or looking at the works of
>southern artists?

Ummmmm... not that I know of, but, again, I'd love to learn!

> And I could go on and on...

Please do!!!

I wouldn't know about grits, and I expect they're good when cooked properly, but everything I know about grits I learned from "My Cousin Vinny"! sadly.

Re: The Governor of California. He's not even a real Democrat, he's a "New Democrat" and a centrist, big money guy. I don't care for him much myself, though we did elect him and he should keep his job, IMO.

> If you want to think of us as "Dukes of Hazzard" hicks, then
> probably nothing I can say will change your mind.

This is kinda my point in asking the question... I *DON'T* want to think of you that way, but since Bo, Luke and Daisy are pretty much the only images of the south I've been given, that kinda *is* the image I have of it. Basically I'm trying to overcome my prejudice about it, and trying to learn more.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I offended you, but I'm eager to learn and would love to get rid of my unfair view of the South!

40. He was long gone from the scene when I lived in your state
mostly was able to enjoy the blatant, political racist opportunism, of Pete Wilson. But also got to vote for both DiFi - and the incredible Barbara Boxer. Could never figure out the psychosis of an electorate that would vote for Boxer... and Wilson  - but I sure enjoyed living out there! :D

More the point is - that many regions have wrought some ugliness into todays political culture/climate. Dangerous to single one area out - without looking the whole of that area (and there are pluses, as jchild points out), and without looking at the ugliness brought to bear in one's own back yard. As a larger society - we are a patchwork quilt and sadly within those patches we have some real powerhungry ugly folks who wind up in power. Those folks tend to come from all over. Sometimes seems like more are from one region or another - and from time to time that may be true - but plenty of political crazies to point to from many regions.

45. Yeah, it's definitely crazy sometimes out here
I've never cared much for Feinstein, but Boxer is great.

Pete Wilson was nuts, and he showed how easy it is to prey on people's xenophobic tendencies. Some of that blatant racism is being brought back for this recall election - we'll see how far it gets. It's very scary.

Anyway, of course you and jchild are right, there's that kinda ugliness and powerhungry politicians everywhere. I know it's here too, and often times in larger quantities. It's just that the South seems so different. What little travel I've done there (a week or so in Texas) actually, though, didn't seem soo different from here, except for all the Waffle Houses!

Anyway, I'll vow to learn more about the South, and I'm sure I'll gain more appreciation of it. One thing I have noticed is that liberals from the south tend to be far more passionate about their beliefs than out here, and, what's wonderful, is that they seem to have so much fun with it. I just get frusterated with the conservative ideology that surrounds me in my airforce town.

Anyway, I'll do my best to learn and overcome my crazy prejudices.

Thanks to both of you for teaching me something.

46. First thing... is the recognition
that you have - that your views are/were limited - and an interest to learn more. Kudos to your open mind.

If you ever get the chance (vacation, conference, etc.), take some extra time in the south. A number of years ago I spent quite a bit of time in Birmingham, Alabama - sometimes I was jarred by the differences (some racial attitudes are expressed much more overtly than other areas in which I have lived - but my work has exposed me - in those less overt area - to those same attitudes in enlightened areas such as the Detroit region, and the SF Bay Area), but mostly I was charmed. Got into some great political discussions with a myriad of folks - and they were always interesting discussions.
