I design Web sites on my Mac (iBook, actually, I only wish I had a Powerbook), and use the desktop PC to check my work in Windows browsers.

2. Portability vs. price and performance |
|
You can get twice the computer at the same price or less with a desktop. If you travel a lot, do your work at the office and home, then a laptop makes sense. For most software the performance is not an issue - unless you are into high powered gaming or math intensive software.

5. Can a person build their own laptop? |
|
And where can you find good components? I've heard the term WhiteBox, which I take to mean a laptop shell without components other than the screen and keyboard.
