Is Slim Pickens the name of the character or the actor?

Thanks,

29. I actually looked this up the other day
My son asked if it was the same actor who was in "Blazing Saddles," and my husband said, "Yes, Slim Pickins," and my son said, "You're kidding."

It turned out that he was a rodeo rider for 20 years before he got into the movies. When he started out, he was just a kid and didn't want his family to know what he was doing, so he figured he'd better use a false name. When he told the rodeo manager, "I want to be in the rodeo," the answer he got was, "All you'll find here is slim pickings." So that was what he took as his name.

Just to make it more confusing, in some of his earliest films he played a character named Slim Pickins as well.

I knew about his rodeo career but didn't know about how he took his stage name.

He was/is a great character actor....

Peter Sellers was supposed to play Major Kong, too, but hurt himself before shooting and couldn't do it. Slim's performance is one of the all-time greats.
