4. I'm cool with everything but the hair
I like it on other people, but I just CAN'T do it. I end up cutting it every time. I've tried, and I just get frustrated with it. I think the thing that sticks with me the most after 8 years in the military is this overwhelming NEED to keep my hair short. Maybe one day I'll commit and grow it.

5. I've been called 'an overfed, long-haired leaping gnome' by some
No pictures, but it would just look like a big cloud of brown hair anyway.

My last haircut was in 1990.

I trimmed my beard about 1/2 inch for a friends wedding in 2000, IIRC. The last time before that...not sure. I don't remember. It's slightly shorter than my ponytail.

10. Yeah, but I've broadened my horizons quite a bit
Culturally/musically, I'm up for about anything. but not a big fan of country music, and heavy metal now gives me a headache (used to like it when I was younger, though).

War is actually one of the few groups of the 60's and 70's that never got stale for me.

the 7th house, and Jupiter aligned with Mars man, my freak flag was flying. It was the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, and I threw up the peace sign, and it did me no harm. Sly was my man, and he took me higher!

Then I graduated from college, got a job, and got square.

Sorry, no pre-square pictures, my mother has one of me in that era stuffed away somewhere, which she shows people and says this is my boy during his communist days!

Edit: For those of you too young to remember, Sly is not the Rambo numbnut, its Sly of Sly and the Family Stone, check them out on the Woodstock DVD, and show us the peace sign, it will do you no harm!

18. I only knew one person in the 60's who would admit to being a hippie
I had a friend who lived in a 6th floor walkup in the East Village and made plastic flowers to sell on streetcorners to the tourists. But she wasn't a hippie -- just slumming.

I knew someone who lived in a communal apartment in the same area. But he was a writer, not a hippie.

I knew people who were stoned for years and tripping every weekend, but they wouldn't admit to being hippies either.

And then there were the leftover beatniks who looked down on the whole hippie thing as teenybopper nonsense.

Maybe things were different out on the West Coast, but where I came from if you claimed to be a hippie it was a sure sign you weren't really serious.

27. Don't have any digital versions of me in the hippie days, but picture
corkscrewy long blonde hair (natural, naturally!) 'bout 5'5", 130, Mexican poncho (NOT a Sears poncho), Levi's, thrift store footwear of the type appropriate to the weather, and quite a bit of silver/turquoise/agate/shell jewelry. Looked like everyone else who was being an individual *lol*
Mid-to-late 70s era teen hippie, not much has changed except the hair has some grey, I've gained 5 pounds, and anything I may once have had to flaunt has LONG since packed up and slid south.

I am an open-minded Earth Mother (or earthy mommy), geeky goddess, and around hot babe, but I am not into either drugs or casual sex (rock and rolls great though). Every time I have even dipped my toes into those realms or have it enter my thought processes, it doesn't work for me. My hair's kind of long though, I'm somewhat a socialist, and I own a few tie-dyed shirts. :D

34. proud hippie, still.
although now i dress in a suit for work, and totally play the part.

but ONLY because my hair thinned out so much it didn't look good, or i would STILL have it, while wearing a suit, playing the part.

had really long hair all my adult life, started growing it as soon as i graduated from high school.

it would get almost to my waist, and for one stupid reason or another (like getting a job) i would cut it. then start immediately growing it back again. i did that four times. took about four years each time because i would always trim it and keep it healthy. each time it was a little thinner

finally, in 1996, i decided if i couldn't do it right, then i wouldn't do it at all. now it's about 1/4 inch, all over. very easy to take care of, and i cut it myself with clippers. cheap.

and i have a van dyke.

so, i'm still a hippie at heart, but also an urban professional, in nyc. and i am STILL wearing my tiny diamond earing (pierced in 1972). ain't gonna give that up. it goes very well with a nice suit. :-)

but, long hair was a statement (at least it was when i started it). and it pretty much, and still does, indicates my overall attitude and philosophy.

make love, not war. unless you absolutely have to, then kick ass. :-)

47. If by hippie you mean that I wear the same dress everyday,
my teeth are sort of rotting, and my hair dreadlocks between washings, well, yes, then I'm a hippie.

However, I wear glitter lip gloss and Dior's Hypnotic Poison perfume. Not very hippie.

But I do wear combat boots and I don't shave my legs. Hippie.

But I also drive a Chevy Lumina and have designer eyeglasses. Not hippie.

But I used to own a multi-colored Peugeot. Totally Hippie.

So I'm in love with Vince Vaughn. Not hippie.

But say I have a full-time "job" as a poet. Hippie.

Actually, I'm more like white trash, I think. My boyfriend got drunk and crashed my car, last weekend. I haven't clipped my toenails for like at least a month. I smoke, and when I'm done smoking, I put the cigarette butts in my purse. There's like a 1-inch layer of loose tobacco in the bottom of my hand-made wool purse.

White trash, definitely. Hippie -- a little, but pseudo-hippie.

64. Do Modern Hippies count?
I led the hippie freak lifestyle in college in teh early 90s. I did the long hair, followed the dead for a summer, the sex, the drugs, the rock and roll. I did the protests, the live and let live, the outrage at moral outrage, the peace of it all and even had a brief dread phase. Then I went to law school, cut my hair and started workign for the man.
