OK... here's mine. These monsters live out here in California and they're INSANELY scary looking. I give you... the Jerusalem Cricket.

Got a better one?

from a worm :)

I added the second pick to show just how mean and nasty and scary and ugly and HUGE their heads are.

In Mexico, they're called "children of the earth"

*shudder*

3. When I was a girl scout, we had to EAT one of these
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 10:34 PM by SoCalDem
It was in Panama, and our troop went through a mini-jungle survival camp , compliments of the US Army.. We camped in the jungle for a whole week, with NO supplies of any kind, except for a rain poncho..

Part of the experience was catching and eating THESE..:( There were a lot of "gaggy" 12 yr old girls that day :(

10. LOL...
Potatobugs.com?!

I'm checking it out now... I've been sorta eerily fascinated with these beasts since my first encounter about 10 years ago. I've only seen 3 more since then. They're not too common, thank god.

17. A student of mine told me about...
la nina de la tierra, which, she said, was DEADLY poisionous. So I immediately googled the phrase and found this wonderful *shudder* site. She was looking over my shoulder and she screamed, "Oh, my god! That's it! That's it!"

20. well...
my first encounter with one was when my cat dragged one in. I first thought he'd caught a frog. I made him drop it, and when I saw it, I nearly soiled myself. It just LOOKS so damned poisonous!

This was pre-internet, so I jumped in the car and ran to the library to find out what it was. Found out it's perfectly harmless.

But dognabbit, they's ugly!

12. From the FAQ at potatobugs.com:
Q: I have potato bugs in my vegetable garden. How can I rid myself of these pesky critters?

A: Drench your entire yard with gasoline and set it ablaze. Once the fire has burned itself out and the ground has cooled, cultivate the soil to a depth of seven feet, saturate the area with battery acid and top the surface with gasoline. After a few minutes, most of the surviving potato bugs, now irritated, will burrow up for air. Set the yard on fire again, and let it burn itself out. The remaining bugs should be crisped. Add water. Only then, and only maybe, will you rid yourself of potato bugs.

21. Sun Spider
These guys live out in the desert! I found this one in my garage, already dead. I scanned it and someone on DU identified it for me.

They are harmless, and actually beneficial as they catch lots of other bugs, and harmful scorpions.

29. Noooo you don't kill them!
They are friendly, and eat scorpions. Scorpions are the bugs you really want to watch out for. We have little ones here that are about an inch long that have a very painful sting. They can kill children! So anything that eats scorpions is my friend.
