Identify that Line--(foreign and old movie edition)
Since I haven't seen most of the popular recent movies, I tend not to do well in the "identify that line" quizzes, so here's one for fans of classic (pre-1980 :-) ) and foreign films.

1. "I once tried on a pair of women's silk underwear. What a sensation! No wonder they want it all the time."

2. "Got two."

3. "Some men are born two drinks below par."

4. "I dreamt I was an egg and an eagle was trying to hatch me."

5. "Was you ever bit by a bee?"

6. "No, but she was ruined all the same."

7. "E-i-e-i-o!"

8. "Well, I've had your boyfriend, and I'd rather sit on me finger!"

9. "I'm going to break up that marriage!"

10. "Don't worry. He'll only pray over me."

11. "That's quiche. It's made with cheese and eggs."

12. "He's a clean old man."

13. "Beauty is a curse for our women."

14. "...and not a day has gone by when I haven't thought of that girl."

15. "Suppress it!"

4. Ive seen oodles of classic ones, but I can't match the
lines above with 'em. :-( It's a good quiz!

And that one about the quiche - there's something So familiar about that. Hmmmmm......maybe I'll ruminate.....

I never have watched too many foreign films, though. Some, but not a lot. Especially not the serious ones. And terminally 'artsy' films? Bleh. :-)

5. I assure you that...
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 10:58 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
none of these are "terminally artsy."

Oh, and the quiche line? It's from a movie that has been listed recently in Movies for Democrats.

6. #7 - "Double Trouble" (1967)
It's true. :-)

Elvis Presley movie - one of my least favorites. They had the poor dude singing "Old McDonald." Elvis walked out of the studio, disgusted, without finishing the recording, so they edited it to fit the scene.

but I've never seen it, and the film I'm thinking about is British.

Would you like a hint?

In this film, Audrey Hepburn has a bit part as a waitress.

10. Audrey Hepburn had a bit part?!
In a British movie?

Well, while I'm mulling over that, I have a question:

8. "Well, I've had your boyfriend, and I'd rather sit on me finger!"

Is this from a Mike Leigh movie?

27. Both Walter & Lauren say the line.
Great film & in the moof top five favs.

#14 is said by Robert Redford to Demi Moore in "Indecent Proposal"

Also the exchange in "to have & have not" where "Steve" tells the two thugs;

" I'm going to keep beating both of you till one of you talks which means that one of you is going to take a beating for nothing "

is great & also the part where "frenchie" tells "Steve"

" don't mind her, ... she is not herself "

& "Steve" totally deadpans back " oh yea then who is she ?"

along with the " Just put your lips together & blow "

" To Have & Have Not" had a bunch of great lines and scenes.

31. Yes, and here are the rest of the answers
1. "I once tried on a pair of women's silk underwear. What a sensation! No wonder they want it all the time."
One of the dimwitted bad guys in Shoot the Piano Player (dir. by Francois Truffaut)

2. "Got two."
The tall samurai goes out overnight to sneak into the bandit camp and comes back at dawn to make this terse report in Seven Samurai.

3. "Some men are born two drinks below par."
After a mama's boy (played by Gordon Jackson, "Hudson" on Upstairs Downstairs) has some whiskey, he is able to stand up to his overbearing mother in Whiskey Galore

4. "I dreamt I was an egg and an eagle was trying to hatch me."
Nanette Newman's character in The Wrong Box wakes up to make this bright-eyed pronouncement.

5. "Was you ever bit by a bee?"
Walter Brennan, a simple-minded alcoholic, asks this question of everyone he meets in To Have and to Have Not, and yes, now that you mention it, Lauren Bacall says it once too.

6. "No, but she was ruined all the same."
Gossipping Southern belles in Gone with the Wind

7. "E-i-e-i-o!"
The movie in which this song figures prominently and in which Audrey Hepburn has a walk-on part as a waitress is The Lavendar Hill Mob

8. "Well, I've had your boyfriend, and I'd rather sit on me finger!"
I admit that this is a tough one. It's from Letter to Brezhnev, a Thatcher-era story of a young Liverpool woman who falls in love with a Russian sailor and can't understand why people don't want her to go to Russia to join him.

9. "I'm going to break up that marriage!"
Teresa Wright in The Best Years of Our Lives says this because she believes that her father's friend is married to a woman who isn't good enough for him.

10. "Don't worry. He'll only pray over me."
The young wife of a brutal Scottish Highlander helps the handcuffed couple escape in The 39 Steps.

11. "That's quiche. It's made with cheese and eggs."
Cary Grant explaining the menu to an American visitor in To Catch a Thief.

12. "He's a clean old man."
As most people realized, this is a recurring line in A Hard Day's Night.

13. "Beauty is a curse for our women."
This is from the Ten Commandments, and it refers to Egyptian overseers raping (although they wouldn't have said that in 1956) the Hebrew women.

14. "...and not a day has gone by when I haven't thought of that girl."
The elderly Bernstein reminiscing about a girl he glimpsed briefly many decades ago in Citizen Kane.

15. "Suppress it!"
Greta Garbo telling Melvyn Douglas what he can do with his emotional reaction in Ninotchka.

I admit that Letter to Brezhnev is a bit obscure, but I like the line.

Two more for you from this weekend's Movies for Democrats (which is now up in the Meeting Room)

16. "You can't see anything in a car."

17. "Oh, I just turned gay all of a sudden."

Any takers?
